Happy 100th Birthday, Lee Cooper!

The iconic British brand is celebrating quite a milestone this month, considering its humble origins as M. Cooper Overalls Ltd., founded in 1908 (the same year Ford launched the first mass production car) by one Morris Cooper, a tailor by trade.  In 1914, the company switched to making battle fatigues, and later designed British uniforms for World War 2; more recently, they created parade wear for the Beijing Olympics. Along the way, the self described Fine English Denim Company introduced "front zip" ladies jeans to an outraged public, as well as 60s tartan slacks and bell bottoms, 70s cords, and skin-tight acid wash "jogging jeans" with a drawstring and prefabricated holes...perfect for the glamazon 80s. Some of Lee Cooper's cooler fashion collaborations have been with Lou Doillon (top), Jade Jagger, Giles Deacon, Jean Charles de Castelbajac, and a neon-bathed Jane Birkin in this shiny ad from 1978. For more on the brand, check out LeeCooper.com. To buy the outrageously cool Lou Doillon for Lee Cooper stone wash jacket and high-waisted shorts she's wearing, go to LeeCooper-Online.com. And for more fun with denim, check out this 1979 Lee Cooper ad by Gary Numan: - Lesley Scott   Grab this Headline Animator sh_domain = 'fashiontribes.typepad.com'; RELATED STORIES:                                  an interesting history of your fave pants                           Justin Timberlake stars as William Rast             ...& don't miss:         vintage style 50s jeans with modern sizing     how to rock high-waisted jeans     Lanvin for Acne jeans     We heart denim too - CLICK HERE for more       fashiontribes. Print Your Own Money Legally

Print Your Own Money Legally

We had never thought about this until we read the story about Criss... More

We had never thought about this until we read the story about Crissy Thompson. Printing coupons is like printing money. Only you won’t go to jail! During tough times, when nearly everyone is looking for ways to save money, clipping coupons can make a bigg difference. But many people don’t use coupons. . . Why don’t we use coupons more? Some people think the only products you can get coupons for are junk. Others feel like they would just buy things they really didn’t need. It takes too much time to find the right coupons. Or it’s just too much of a hassle. There’s also a stigma associated with coupons – some people feel that only “cheap” people or people who don’t have money use coupons. But they’re wrong! In fact, Thomas J. Stanley, in his wonderful book The Millionaire Mind, showed that many millionaires use coupons. Many people may think the savings from coupons are negligible, but they can really add up if you know what you’re doing. It’s just like making more money, only you don’t have to pay taxes on what you save! Combined discounts save bigg money! Crissy Thompson has a husband and three kids. Her grocery bill used to be as much as $250 a week. Now she spends as little as $10 a week to feed her family. It seems like she is particularly adept at combining discounts. For example, she loves “buy 1, get 1 free” deals combined with coupons. The story gives the example of some cereal that cost $3.79, but the second box was free. Crissy had two $3 coupons for this brand of cereal. That’s another thing we learned from reading this article – one coupon per purchase doesn’t mean “transaction”; it means “item”. So she paid $3.79 for two boxes of cereal. She was able to use $6 worth of coupons. In essence, she got paid $2.21 to buy that cereal! Shop for free! She likes CVS because they have a rewards program called Extra Care Bucks. Extra Care Bucks can be used on your next purchase. The story highlights a couple of items she got for free – some deodorant ($4.99 less $4.99 Extra Care Bucks = $0 net) and a toothbrush ($3.99 less $3.99 Extra Care Bucks equals $0 net). Combine that with some manufacturer’s coupons and you could get paid to shop! Don’t wait for your money Crissy also demonstrated her financial prowess because she wasn’t willing to wait for her money. Since the Extra Care Bucks have to be used on your next purchase, Crissy makes multiple purchases in the same trip! Then she can use her rewards immediately. Crissy’s 2 cents worth At Target, you can print out coupons from their web site and use manufacturers’ coupons – 2 coupons, 1 product! That helped Crissy with the transaction of which she is most proud … She walked out Target’s door with $380 worth of merchandise. Her grand total out-of-pocket cost … 2 cents! Like any endeavor in which you wish to succeed bigg, it takes research and some work. However, shopping like Crissy is like putting money in the bank! If You Can Beat BeatThat.com’s Prices, They’ll Pay You

If You Can Beat BeatThat.com’s Prices, They’ll Pay You

e-commerce, e-retail, shopping Wade Roush wrote: For many online sh... More

e-commerce, e-retail, shopping Wade Roush wrote: For many online shoppers, no sooner have they hit the “buy” button than they’re struck by angst over whether they missed out on a better deal at another site. But at BeatThat.com, a consumer electronics shopping site that emerged from beta testing yesterday, there’s less reason to worry: the site digs up the Web’s best deals on camcorders, digital cameras, GPS devices, MP3 players, printers, and TVs by paying consumers for the information. If you find a product advertised at a price that’s lower than the lowest one currently featured at BeatThat, the company will pay you $2.00. That way, “there’s an incentive for the deals to keep coming in until, quite frankly, you just can’t find a better one,” says David Parker, CEO of Cambridge, MA-based Digital Advisors, which created the site. “At that point, we can very confidently say we have the best prices on the Internet.” Digital Advisors is a five-year-old, privately funded company that already operates a network of shopping websites, focused on high-definition TVs, digital cameras, satellite TV units, laptops, and camcorders. “All of those sites are doing fine. The concept is to help consumers make good choices,” says Parker, who was a co-founder of Bedford, MA-based SoundBite Communications and a business development executive at Viaweb (the maker of Web storefront software founded by Paul Graham, now of Y Combinator fame) and Direct Hit (a search engine acquired in 2002 by Ask Jeeves, now called Ask.com). “But about a year ago we decided that we wanted to try something different. We have a couple of people on our staff who are really good at sniffing out excellent prices, and a light bulb went off when we realized that the best prices we were showing on our sites, which were provided to us by an aggregation service, were never the best prices you could get.” Parker knew there was a business model in attracting customers looking for price information on specific products, since they’re usually on the cusp of a major purchase, and e-retailers are willing to pay a commission for them—indeed, that’s how Shopzilla, PriceGrabber, and the plethora of other comparison-shopping sites make money. “So we came up with the concept for BeatThat, which would have a fixed inventory of products and would always have the best prices for those products,” he says. The difference between BeatThat and the other shopping sites, Parker explains, is that every price shown on BeatThat has been submitted by a “Deal-Finder”—a person who’s an expert at sniffing out bargains. Like amateur commodities dealers, these contributors spend much of their spare time sifting through websites for discounted products that retailers themselves often aren’t highlighting. They also keep track of the confusing world of coupons, manufacturer rebates, and free shipping offers, which tend to change from day to day. To motivate inveterate bargain hunters to contribute their discoveries to BeatThat, the company set up its payment system, which is already netting several of the top Deal-Finders more than $1,000 a month, according to Parker. “We didn’t want to rely on the merchants to tell us when the price is good,” Parker says. “We wanted to rely on the literal wisdom of the crowd. And if you have a large enough crowd looking for the best deals, you are going to find them.” Anyone with an account at BeatThat can submit their product discoveries to the site; once the information is verified, Digital Advisor will put up to $2.00 into user’s account. Once a month, the accumulated funds are transferred into users’ Paypal accounts. After submitting three approved deals, a user is invited to become an official Deal-Finder. But finding the absolute lowest prices on the Web comes with one big hazard: the best prices are often found at the least scrupulous e-retailers. “Like it or not, in consumer electronics there are a number of web stores that are not …Next Page » Comments | Permalink | Share |  E-mail UNDERWRITERS AND PARTNERS Less

Backyard Bliss

Backyard Bliss

We both enjoy our work so we tend to work a lot. We feel fortunate that we get to work side-by-side. However, just because we’re physically near someone, it doesn’t mean you’re really “together.” So this past weekend, we took our own advice and had some bigg down time. . . I love garage sales because there are so many great bargains! So George drove, and I dragged him all over hitting garage sales. . And thanks to Mary-Lynn, we followed that up with … yet more shopping. . . We have these gorgeous, bigg, old trees on our lot, but that means there are a lot of limbs down after every storm. We had a fellow who mowed our yard and hauled the limbs away. But he had knee surgery this spring, and the gentleman who mows it now doesn’t do that. . That’s right. But here’s the thing … I have a love for fire! So I thought … why not burn these limbs? So we bought a fire pit! But there was something about the fire pit we bought that George really liked. . Yeah, I thought it was cool because it’s also a grill. Since I’m a purist, I like to cook with charcoal rather than gas. This way, we can cook on wood, which we get for free, and not spend money on charcoal! . Even hassles don’t create angst We also bought a chain saw. Now, don’t be alarmed … this chain saw is about the size of a blow dryer! But when we opened the box, there were pieces missing. So back to the store we went. Then we realized it didn’t come with the oil we needed. Back to the store again. It proved the theory a friend of ours has – no home improvement project is complete until you’ve made at least three trips to the store! But it was our day off! We weren’t in a rush so we enjoyed the time together in spite of it all. Backyard bliss So last Saturday night, we sat around our fire as we listened to music and grilled some hot dogs … and okay, a few marshmallows! It was so relaxing … all on our own back patio. We had backyard bliss. (Don’t confuse it with the song “Ballroom Blitz”!) So we caught up by slowing down! Even if you work with your spouse or significant other – and maybe we should say, especially if you work together – it’s important to have “together time” that’s not associated with work. We wish we could say that we planned to do this, but we would be lying. We’re good at planning our business and work activities, but sometimes we struggle with planning personal things. But now that we have our fire pit, it will be easy to walk out the door and relax! Not long ago, we talked about why it’s good to spend time in nature. For many of us, nature is in our own backyard! So you don’t have to do a lot of planning. You don’t have to spend a lot of money. You don’t even have to go anywhere. Stay at home and have some fun! Don't forget the bug spray…that was our 4th trip to the store! . . From the Runway to Your Wrist

From the Runway to Your Wrist

The Timex Fashion Trend Director, Amy Goodman , recently discussed ... More

The Timex Fashion Trend Director, Amy Goodman , recently discussed how to apply five of the hot fall fashion trends to watches. "Although the clothes were toned down, the season's key trends are amazingly relatable for the everyday woman with shining moments, as always, in accessories. Since a watch is a seasonless and always functional accessory, I’ve edited the thousands of watches in the Timex collection to show you a range of watches that marry with fall’s key styles." TREND #1: BRIGHT COLORS Fall's bold colors showed up as a vibrant kelly green at Gaultier Couture, princess pink at Givenchy Couture, shocking cobalt at Moschino, and rich royal purple at Zac Posen. But even if you opt out of head-to-toe hues, a chic colored watch (or three) will keep you right on trend. TREND #2: ON SAFARI From Gaultier Couture's lederhosen-clad adventurer to Gareth Pugh's futuristic warrior princess and leather sheath dresses in shades of army drab at Hermes, safari wanderlust wandered down the runways in full force. Try: An oversized men's watch with a classic, clean face and a chocolate or black band. TREND #3: MENSWEAR CHIC To catch the vibe, think Katherine Hepburn striding scandalously about in well-cut trousers - a wide swishy leg if you're tall enough; a more modified (and therefore flattering) version if you're not. Either way, a giant watch with a bold face makes sure that stylish statement on your wrist keeps up with your badass pants. (I, myself, would feel naked without my beloved, fabulously ginormous Timex TX.) TREND #4: TWINKLE, TWINKLE   Sparkling necklaces (Burberry), shiny bold bracelets and rings (Marc Jacobs), even bling for shoes (Christian Dior)...take a style cue from a bodacious babe who knew more really is more and make Mae West proud with a crystal-encrusted timepiece. TREND #5: TIMELESS BLACK & WHITE Whether rendered in a cheeky shift dress at Sass & Bide or in an outrageous embellished cello-shaped "dress" at Central Saint Martins, black and white is always right.  A classy gold or silver watch makes for just the right chic touch - for extra glamour points, sport black opera-length gloves and wear your watch on the outside. For more Amy Goodman's take on the trends, check out TimexStyle.com...however if it's just too soon to think Fall Fashion, she shot this fun quickie video covering the summer fashion trends and how to get the look for less: - Lesley Scott !ë Grab this Headline Animator sh_domain = 'fashiontribes.typepad.com'; RELATED STORIES:                                  Timex TX introduces TechnoLuxury                           an oversized watch = easy fashion fabulousness             ...& don't miss:         be fashionably late with a Tom Binns "No Time" neon watch (or make your own)     Badgley Mischka's new Art Deco timepieces     cool re-tooled vintage watches by Bellum Classics     skittles-colorful fun rubber watches from Ike Gomatto       fashiontribes.
