RSS Awareness Day

Well I suppose now that its just about 5pm EST I should have gotten this post out a little earlier. However the fact that I forgot still does not change the simple fact that today is RSS Awareness Day. I can say that without RSS I would be a lot less productive as it lets me scan hundreds of posts and websites in minutes looking for just the good stuff that helps me get the job done. Personally as a multi-computer user I prefer (and use) Google Reader, but there are a variety of great RSS clients out there. Some good options for PC’s and Mac’s alike as well as online readers such as Bloglines and the previously mentioned Google Reader. For anyone in your life, I am sure you have at least more than a few, that are RSS ignorant here is a great video called “RSS In Plain English” courtesy of commoncraft. Here are a few links to check out for RSS; rssday.org, rssday.info and of course we cannot forget Wikipedia, who defines RSS as: “RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts.[2] An RSS document (which is called a “feed” or “web feed”[3] or “channel”) contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with web sites in an automated manner that can be piped into special programs or filtered displays.” Credit: (jeff)isageek for posting this and reminding me. Feed the Net!

Feed the Net!

Feeds are the new lifeblood of the Internet. If you listen to this ... More

Feeds are the new lifeblood of the Internet. If you listen to this podcast any way other than visiting sixtysecondtech.com and clicking play, then you are using a feed. Feeds have become so ubiquitous that you may not even know you use them. Feeds are XML files, while they are human readable, that’s about as fun as a trip to the dentist, so I don’t recommend trying it. Instead, feeds are consumed by software. Readers, like Google Reader, consume feeds from blogs and other sources and present the content in a single place for you to peruse. Podcatchers, like iTunes, consume feeds and download the podcasts they describe (like this one) to your audio player of choice. Feeds generally come in two flavors, RSS or “Really Simple Syndication” and Atom, which was designed by people didn’t like RSS. While RSS is the more commonly used format, Atom is considered by most to be the more complete and technically accurate format. Thanks to services like feedburner.com most website owners never have to worry about which format they need to publish. Feedburner allows you to publish your feed once and it takes care of the translation. So, if you’ve got a website, especially one with content that regularly changes, go ahead and feed the net. The State of Tech Culture in Iowa

The State of Tech Culture in Iowa

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed On my rec... More

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed On my recent trip home to Iowa, I was able to meet up with several business and personal friends at a Des Moines Tweet-Up. We discussed RSS Feeds and how Twitter has replaced them for me. Nathan played “interviewer” on this video with me. Back in ‘the day’, we used to have to visit web pages to get our information. Those pages didn’t tell us when they updated, so we had to find out manually. Then, along came RSS. The idea was you could subscribe to something, and it would tell you when there was a new update. Now comes Twitter, with its flood of information that allows me to spot trends in general. Twitter has supplanted the information I used to receive in my news aggregator. I don’t follow many websites anymore, and don’t really ’subscribe’ to anything. For me, if something is going to be relevant, I’m going to read about it on Twitter. With Twitter, I’m able to follow people much easier. As disorganized as it is, it’s easier for me to learn about personalities. You can understand thoughts and feelings much easier than you could with a simple RSS feed. Nathan then brings up my hometown of Des Moines, Iowa. He wonders what sorts of things does Des Moines have to do to attract and retain a creative class of people? My answer is simple… imports. The chief export of the Midwest is people. The problem is that as much as you could hope to attract people with the similar mindset, to change the culture is nearly impossible. The path of least resistance is to find your way to groups, such as physical meet-ups like this one. You want to look for forward thinkers, people who have new ideas and aren’t afraid to put them into action. Back in 1992 when I was in college, the Internet was just starting to really get off the ground, and was being offered to students. When I was ready to start having a presence on the Internet, people in Des Moines looked at me like I was a crazy man. They just weren’t ready for it. It’s the culture, and it’s not that there’s anything ‘wrong’ with it. It’s just the way it is. People have to be shown that technology isn’t a thing to be feared… it should be embraced. Iowa’s infrastructure is there, but the mind structure isn’t. I love that I’m no longer the “ugly duckling” when I return home to Iowa. There are more and more people like me! We’re a group, and I love it! The only way to change that culture is to teach that culture. Don’t keep it inside an echo chamber. Make it real. Make connections with people online and offline. Educate them. You’ll find then that your treasures will come pouring in. Real Estate Marketing Secrets From Iowas #1 Agent. Want to embed this video on your own site, blog, or forum? Yahoo Pipes allows the user to combine, aggregate, and filter feeds so that the resulting feed pinpoints the information you want. Instead of having to write complicated scripts, Yahoo Pipes' graphical interface lets you drag and drop the blocks in which you enter the URLs of the feeds, the names of the filters or key terms, and then to relate them, or "wire" the feeds together. podcast: http: [[ This is a content summary only.
