Episode 19 almost didn’t make it. While we found a brilliant new video recording method that offers the best quality yet, Ole’s nervous clicking made the application freak out and crash so all you get to see in the video is Ole, even frozen while others talk. Fun! (I promise to have that fixed next time) It’s a great discussion though so check it out! Less

During this set, beardtongue broke his bass drum pedal, lost 5 sticks, lost the hi-hat clutch while the stand rotated out of range, and knocked the snare drum off its stand by the time the performance was over. I hate to be that tommy aldridge kind of drummer who finishes off a solo by knocking everything over, but if there is one night in my life, and if ever a drumset wanted to be kicked around, it was my drumset last friday night. You can hear it a little bit. Less

STARDUST REVIEW: Go and see Gaiman's modern fairy tale, quick!
YourGeekNews.com + The BSGcast: Battlestar Galactica Video Podcast
Considering how poorly this gem is doing at the box office, there's... More
Considering how poorly this gem is doing at the box office, there's a good chance you'll miss your opportunity to catch Stardust in theatres if you don't go soon... it's been billed as an action fantasy epic, and it's been graded by critics as such, and is not stacking up to Lord of the Rings. But what some of the denser film professionals fail to see is that, while marketed as an epic, Stardust is a fairy tale, and is more at home in the company of Inigo and Westley from the Princess Bride than Frodo and Gandalf. We loved what we saw, but we knew what to expect. So now you know what to expect, too :) ~Matt + Nat Less

St. Petersburg Noise artists SPIN and Mr. Fantastic combine to form the noise group The Uhhh. . . . which in turn were joined by Tampa musicians Dianna and Dave of Chiari Network, and myself on drumset. There is a loud feedback whine which I believe was intentional, so I left it in the recording. Less

The guitar-drums duo of Ingram and Manchester marks a decided endeavor to explore musical understatement, a project that, by considering its relationsship with “silence,” respects some of the more restrained acoustic qualities of its instrumentation. The resulting compositional vehicles therefore take on a kind of “slow motion sleight of hand,” in which exposition and obfuscation are readily available elements to be shuffled. This invitation into process, however, is rendered more enticing by means of the duo’s contant exploration of fresh, cinematic coloration. -Cliff Ingram Less

Over the next three installments, I will be posting recordings of three compositions by Chicago Guitarist Bill Mackay performed by his group Darts and Arrows. Other musicians are Dominic Johnson on violin, Lili Wosko on cello, Kyle Hernandez on bass, and Joshua Manchester on drums. Bill describes these pieces as chamber folk, experimental psych-folk, or even “Edgar Allen Poe” folk, if that gives you any clues to his intent. Please also reference the Darts and Arrows set which precedes this one, because with a slightly different personnel and no programming, a vastly different tenor was struck. Less

Josh Manchester Radio Performance

The Vagaries of Music Education. A live improvisation in tandem with a four-part recorded composition. The concept for this piece occurred when I came across some rehearsal tapes from my school years of playing a banal rhythm at different tempos on a practice pad. I instantly remembered the late-night session in the institutional white room in the basement of my university. When I heard the track, I felt nothing but frustration that by the time I graduated, I had put myself under immense pressure to emulate an absent abstraction, yet knew nothing about how to express my own tastes. In this brief four-part composition I attempt to weave something of interest from these mindless exercises, manipulating this rhythm into clusters evocative of chaotic systems. In the live performance, a free improvisation was played over the recorded composition. Performed live on Philip Von Zweck’s radio show, “Something Else” November 6th 2005, 10th anniversary episode. Guitarist Mitra of Sir Edmund Hillary and the Sherpas improvises with Joshua Manchester, the band’s drummer. This recording took place on February 22, 2006. Neither musician feels compelled to restrain themselves to a tempo usually, but in this recording a number of grooves develop. In this rock-based experiment, new ideas lead to various places, or slowly transmute over the course of mistakes and shifting avoidances. Less
