Microsoft, Novell Continue Unlikely Windows-Linux Partnership
Software, open source, deals Wade Roush wrote: In November 2006, Re... More
Software, open source, deals Wade Roush wrote: In November 2006, Redmond, WA-based Microsoft and Waltham, MA-based Novell surprised the software world by announcing that Microsoft would market Novell’s version of the Linux operating system to its own customers, and that the two companies would set up an “Interoperability Lab” in Cambridge, MA. Nearly two years later, the partnership is still in place, and today the old rivals—Microsoft nearly wiped out Novell in the early 1990s—said that they’re extending it to the tune of $100 million. That’s how much more Microsoft will spend on certificates that Windows Server customers can redeem for support from Novell, including support for its SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. (In the first 18 months of the partnership, Microsoft purchased $240 million worth of the certificates, and customers such as Wal-Mart, HSBC, Renault, Southwest Airlines, and BMW redeemed $157 million of them.) The idea is to lend a hand to Windows Server users who are interested in running Linux on the same machines. It wasn’t so long ago that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was calling open-source software a “socialist” technology that threatened to undermine profits and innovation in the commercial software world. So the Novell partnership is an example of what many observers have called increased pragmatism on Microsoft’s part about the spread of Linux inside the corporations that are the software giant’s mainstay. If businesses are going to use Linux, Microsoft seems to be saying, it might as well be a version of Linux sold by a company that Microsoft currently likes. “Some customers have told us they want to be able to run Windows Server and Linux together seamlessly, but in many cases, they need help with the transition to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server from other Linux environments,” Kevin Turner, chief operating officer at Microsoft, said in a company press release today. “Our increased investment in the relationship with Novell is intended to give these customers and partners the best possible Windows-Linux interoperability solution, while also extending their existing Windows Server investments and helping to give them IP peace of mind.” (That last part about “peace of mind” is code for “making sure they’re running a fully licensed, paid-up version of Linux and not some free or pirated version.”) But the relationship between Microsoft and Novell goes beyond Linux support. At their Interoperability Laboratory in Cambridge, the companies are also collaborating on virtualization technology—specifically, making sure that SUSE Linux runs well on Microsoft’s Hyper-V hypervisor and that Windows Servers 2008 runs well on Xen, the open source hypervisor that’s at the core of Novell’s Linux virtualization software as well as almost every other virtualization system outside of those from VMware. The companies are also working together on document format compatibility, directory and identity federation (a Novell specialty), accessibility technology, and the Moonlight multimedia framework (a version of Microsoft’s Silverlight multimedia platform that runs on Mono, an open-source alternative to Microsoft’s .NET architecture). The whole idea is to keep customers in the fold of the commercial software world by “building a bridge between proprietary and open source software,” in the words of Novell president and CEO Ron Hovsepian. And it seems to be working: the Microsoft-Novell partnership has resulted in “very high demand” for SUSE Linux Enterprise, Hovsepian says. Comments | Permalink | Share | E-mail Less

Running Multiple OS’s With VirtualBox
Have you ever wished you could run multiple OS’s on top of yo... More
Have you ever wished you could run multiple OS’s on top of your main OS? Well, with a program called Virtual Box you can. Virtual Box allows you to create your own virtual machines running on top of a host OS. Right Know I’m running a Ubuntu virtual machine on top of Windows Vista which is my host operating system. Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh and OpenSolaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4 and 2.6), and OpenBSD. The best part about Virtual Box is that it’s free. Virtual Box does run under Fedora but I’ve had some trouble with it. I’m hoping to do an episode of the podcast with detailed instructions for getting Virtual Box to run under Fedora. Virtual Machines require a lot of memory so if you want to multi-task between VM’s and your host OS your going to want at least 1gb of RAM and even then it will be slow. For smooth multi-tasking I’d recommend 2gb of RAM. I got Fedora Core 8 uo and running fine in Virtualbox. I have tried Microsoft’s Virtual PC 2007 but it doesn’t work well at running linux. I like Virtual Box because you can use up to 128mb of shared memory for graphics which comes in hand when your running a linux distro that uses compiz, compiz fusion etc. With Virtual Box it’s easy to try out different linux distros. I would highly recommend VirtualBox to anyone looking for a free Virtual Machine Manager/Creater. Less

Software, open source, google Luke Timmerman wrote: Google has donated $300,000 to Oregon State University to build more capacity at its open source computing lab, which means the company has now given a total of $750,000 to the lab, the university said in a statement. The money will further the work of the university, which has already played a role in some of the largest open source computing projects, including the Mozilla Firefox browser, parts of the One Laptop Per Child project, and the Linux Foundation’s main infrastructure. Linux Unanticipated by Andrew McCaskey The John Dvorak column in PC magazine might just hold out one of the most significant stories of the decade. Recently a family dinner brought up the subject of one of the recent XP overnight reboot upgrades that effectively broke every machine in the house. My brother - who’s business depends on the computer for much of the day was once again the unwilling IT technician. The problem turned out to be that the XP upgrade broke something in Zone Alarm, and there was no clear path other than to continually roll back the system to before the Windows Update. The vision that an instant on system into Linux, with Firefox available immediately, wifi and apps such as Google and Zoho will insure that he would seldom if ever boot into WIndows would sell him on a system upgrade in a hot second. As a matter of fact, it would sell me as well, given our direct family experience with Vista and Windows machines in general. Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed If any of you subscribe to CPU magazine, you know I’m a monthly columnist. I’ve become a huge user advocate. I even recently suggested that the hardware and software industry adopt an operating system that isn’t Windows… in order to benefit Windows. More competition on the desktop is good for everyone. I got an email here about something I know I have heard about in the past. I just haven’t had an occasion to tell you all about it. Sam pointed me towards ReactOS. ReactOS is a free, modern operating system based on the design of Windows XP/2003. Written completely from scratch, it aims to follow the Windows architecture designed by Microsoft from the hardware level right through to the application level. This is not a Linux based system, and shares none of the unix architecture. The main goal of the ReactOS project is to provide an operating system which is binary compatible with Windows. This will allow your Windows applications and drivers to run as they would on your Windows system. Additionally, the look and feel of the Windows operating system is used, such that people accustomed to the familiar user interface of Windows would find using ReactOS straightforward. The ultimate goal of ReactOS is to allow you to remove Windows and install ReactOS without the end user noticing the change. Please bear in mind that ReactOS 0.3.5 is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is not recommended for everyday use. Certainly the hope for open-source will grow. I’ve had a long-standing belief that open-source is the future of software. It’s more than just a marketing tactic. Not only do you get software for free, it’s about learning from the code as well. I’m no coder. I can work my way around a file or script, but I can’t do much of it on my own from scratch. I can do a bit of HTML and CSS… but I only learned that by looking at what others have done. Thanks, Sam, for passing this along. If any of you know about something equally unique, let me know about it! I’d love to take a look. Cracking The Forex Code. Falling Through 3G Holes by Andrew McCaskey I certainly appreciate the cautionary note raided by Fortune and the Daily Tech - incomplete 3G coverage and the new iPhone. The Sprint EVDO card has worked so well that it’s been easy to get really, really enthused about 3G. Even though there was going to be a premium in the data plan, plus the additional cash outlay and extension to the contract, the need for speed almost made the sale. Until the article on 3G coverage. It looks like AT&T has been lagging considerably compared with Sprint. The map has the same look as it did for years with other wireless services - stuck in a hole between major markets 70 to 100 miles away in each direction, but not profitable enough to add service to fill the hole. In fact, it is worse than that. With coverage in Chicago/Gary 90 miles away, the nearest AT&T coverage beyond that is 150 miles south in Indianapolis. Unless I do a lot more traveling, the 3G is simply not worth the money. Of course a new grandson in Indy might make it all worthwhile - especially if the new iPhone camera is improved. It looks like I’ll be spending a lot of travel time in the AT&T 3G service area. Need to check that out. Grandkids do that to you. Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed Yes, Linux is an operating system that I do recommend to people at times. I don’t use Linux as my operating system, but I do have several Linux live CDs. A live CD is one that is started as an ISO file that you download, burn it to a CD, pop it into your drive and reboot. Your computer will run Linux from memory, without writing it to your hard drive. There are even ways that you can put a Linux distro on a flash drive, which is nice. I can carry it around with me, along with some diagnostic tools. This way, if I am working on a machine that won’t boot into Windows, I can open it up with Linux. The problem that I always have with live CDs for Linux is that when they’re built, they include things I would never include. Or, they don’t put in things that I feel I should have. It just isn’t a very customizable experience. I got a few emails from a community member named Aaron the other day. He wanted to send me to a place where I can customize my Linux live CDs any way I want them. At Custom NimbleX, you can easily create your own customized version of Linux that only you and the people you share it with will be able to use. Now, you won’t find everything that is available for Linux here, of course, but it is very comprehensive. You can choose to go with a clean, simple customization, or you can choose to create an extremely in-depth one. You can even choose your default wallpaper(s), including your username, and including the volume at which the controller is set on boot. It’s very easy to create one of these, and absolutely free. If you choose to create a ‘custom’ CD, you choose what categories you want included… and then choose the software! Add what you want, and know you’ll use. Leave the rest alone. How cool is it to finally be able to choose what YOU want and need? PLRSiteBuilder. Oracle University 10g Database Workbooks. Want to embed this video on your own site, blog, or forum?
