A new song. A ballad of a rowdy man and a bad end. Another murder ballad. I wrote it tonight after fooling around on my ukulele until I came up with a riff that sounded old-timey and mournful, and then I started pasting lyrics across it. Pretty quickly, I realized it was going to be about someone's death. I've been thinking a lot about those folks that you meet every now and then for whom violence seems to be a sort of first language for them: You look at them at the wrong moment and they push you up against a wall, and you can just tell they're hoping you'll take a swing at them. I don't meet people like this often, and, when I do, I stay as far away from them as I can. I suppose I'm a drinker rather than a fighter. It's been quite a long time since I got into any sort of fight at all. In fact, the last one I remember was in about 1996. I was walking around behind St. Anthony Main late one night, just minding my own business, when I saw a car stopped in the middle of the street, headlights still on. Behind them were two figures, one slumped on the ground, the other standing. As I got closer, I realized that the figure on the ground was a woman, and the figure above her was a man holding a hammer. The woman did not seem conscious, and I knew I wasn't going to be able to leave until I was sure that woman was safe. I began shouting at the man, hoping to frighten him away, cursing and telling him to get back into his car. He stared at me, shrugged, and then walked toward me, grinning and holding the hammer up. As he got close to me, I reached out and grabbed both his wrists and pulled him close to me. He had wild eyes and a small beard, and we struggled. "This is what I want," he said. I decided I needed to knock him out. Somehow I got one hand free, and so I punched him in the forehead. His head snapped back, and then rolled back up. He was still grinning. He struck him again, and then again, each time with the same result. Later, reading about bare-knuckle boxing, I found out that gloveless matches could go on for sixty rounds or more. The head can absorb an astounding amount of impact, encased, as it is, in thick bone. I was about as likely to punch him into unconsciousness by hitting his forehead as I was to crack a walnut by blowing on it. And, each time I struck him, he said "This is what I want." Eventually, I just pulled him as close as I could, hugging him, and I whispered in his ear. "This isn't what I want," I said. "This isn't what I want at all. All I want is for you to get in your car and drive away and leave me alone." With that, his shoulders slumped. He stepped away from me, and I let go of his arms. With a defeated look, he turned, walked to his car, threw the hammer in the back seat, and drove away. I later found out that he had just been released from prison. He had picked up his girlfriend, filled suitcases with her possessions, accused her of cheating on him, and drove around the city, flinging her belongings out of the car window. Then he had stopped the car and proceeded to beat her, until I had intervened. When I got home that evening, I looked at my arms. I had not noticed when it was happening, but the claw end of the hammer had made hideous scratches along my forearms. I suppose this song is what I think happens to men like that. This is part 2 of an in depth look at Diabetes, Hyperglycemia and Syndrome X, explaining them in detail and concluding with showing how to rebuild pancreatic function – removing diabetes and the different supplements that can benefit these different types of blood sugar problems. This article explains Syndrome X, while part 1 was about the Types of Diabetes. Diabetes or Hyperglycemia is the accumulation of too much glucose in the blood stream, because of a pancreatic insufficiency, that usually involves insufficient production of pancreatic enzyme, and some times insufficient insulin, while Syndrome X was coined by Dr Gerald Raven, Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. Dr Raven noted that there were many individuals presenting with the phenomenon of insulin resistance, yet they could not be classified type 2 diabetes. These patients were at greater risk of cardiovascular disease than the general population, so this is what he called “Syndrome X”. Insulin and Insulin Resistance So we understand that insulin resistance is an elevated level of insulin but it is a nonfunctional insulin, not able to pull the glucose out of the blood. Unfortunately, insulin is essential for energy delivery and storage of hormone. The glucose circulates in the blood instead of being taken into the cells, where it can be combusted for energy production, and the excess stored for fat. As mentioned in the previous article on Diabetes, we have 3 hormones that raise blood sugar, glucagon, cortisol and adrenalin. Professor Raven believes that insulin resistance generally develops in response to excess body weight and lack of exercise. The 2nd part is true but the first one we already discussed that is not true. Other researchers like Bernstein MD and Rosendale point the finger to starches such as bread, pasta, bakers, chips, cookies, breakfast cereal. To measure carbohydrates in urine, not directly but indirectly insulin resistance, I use a special test that measures dissolved solids, including simple and complex carbohydrates, and salts of varying types… if this special test result falls below 1.2 on my scale, then oxygen levels in the blood will be reduced. Which means that oxidation reactions at cell level are being interfered with, altering the balance of energy flowing in and out – at cellular level. When this number goes above a certain level (5.49 on my scale) – oxygen levels are also reduced, although the over all effect is not the same. This actually promotes an anaerobic fermentation reaction at the cellular level. This number in a healthy person correctly should read between 1.2 and 2 on my scale. …The test for insulin resistance is measuring the amount of insulin in the blood which is one method but that’s not very efficient. Glucose tolerance is much more reliable. I do both of these and 67 other tests for you, all combined in the Gold test. If glucose registers between a 110 and 130 on fasting, this is considered glucose impaired fasting. If the glucose 2 hours after a meal is given between 140 and 200, then we have a new condition name - Syndrome X. So, with Syndrome X, we also have elevated triglycerides (levels of 200 and higher). Elevated Triglycerides Triglycerides are fats found in the blood stream and fatty tissue, and they serve as fuel for the heart and muscles. In normal circumstances when glucose and insulin levels go back to normal, triglycerides are released back into the blood stream from the fat storage. It is a normal process in the morning when you wake up (that’s why doctors do morning triglyceride tests.) So once you eat and your body releases insulin in response to glucose. The glucose will inhibit the release of triglycerides. In case of insulin resistance even if there is a normal to high amount of glucose in the blood stream to generate energy (but because we have the insulin, the insulin receptors are overwhelmed) not enough glucose is entering cells for energy. So triglycerides have to be released in the blood to make up for this energy deficit. Unfortunately this stimulates the liver to produce even more triglycerides and this vicious cycle continues, and this is also part of syndrome X. At this point we have about 30% of population with syndrome X. This is why the risk of cardiovascular disease is so high in syndrome X. In addition to that, we have the elevated amount of homocysteine primarily due to a deficiency of certain vitamins necessary in the Krebs cycle. As referenced in the previous article on Diabetes, cardiovascular disease is a top killer in North America, but is not caused by obesity and it is not caused by diabetes and is not caused by aging. The only causative factor in insulin resistance is high fat combined with high sugar diet. So now think about all the patients with elevated blood pressure being treated with hypertensive drugs, and elevated triglycerides being treated with medication, and diabetics being treated with insulin when they already have enormous amounts of insulin (Which is itself a very dangerous hormone) The medical establishment puts very little emphasis on the diet to correct this disease. What is very heavily emphasized is a “diabetic diet” which is very high in grains like muffins, toast, cereal, rice loaded with sugar and then some fruit and vegetables and very little meat and fat. The effects of this diet were briefly mentioned earlier. They virtually guarantee the diabetes continuing. But if it is too difficult to follow a diet, then we have drugs. How about some lipotor or resulin. Or some metformin. The doctor might recommend you the “low fat” diet and make sure you use the “healthy” canola oil, margarine, aspartame instead of sugar, etc (I’m being sarcastic here -make sure you never ever touch any of these chemical poisons which happen to be distributed as safe consumption foods). Sure, they try to mention a high fiber diet and exercise. Well, at least they tried! The Death Package High blood pressure ties in with the high triglycerides, cardio weakness, obesity – they are all linked – and often come as a package. The answer to lower high blood pressure and break this chain is not to combine sugar, especially mixed with fat. According to Professor Raven, to treat syndrome X you need to exercise and to lose weight. The problem comes when trying to determine the diet that will do this effectively. As we discussed before there is the Alkalarian diet, the Atkins diet, the Sears diet, the Ornish diet, the South Beach diet, now even the Raven diet - and he says 45% carbs, 40% unsaturated fat and 15% protein, roughly 1800 calories per day. These are all a “1 diet fits all” philosophy - which we already know from previous articles is completely incorrect. All you can safely say is a high fat; high sugar diet is the #1 domino that leads to crashing health. If you have any type of “condition”… Guessing your precise best diet is almost 100% likely to be wrong. Guessing your precise best diet from reading books, or articles, no matter how many is almost 100% likely to be wrong as well. Guessing your precise best diet from a nutritionists bell-curve and theory based advice is almost 100% likely to be wrong as well – as is the “diabetic diet” Talking to people who have successfully lost weight, and “modeling” them, is also almost 50-80% likely to be wrong – for you. Now can you understand why it’s so important to get properly tested with the Gold Test which will catch frequent misdiagnoses, the actual reversible causes, and the proper diet. What Is Diabetes? Diabetes or Hyperglycemia is the accumulation of too much glucose in the blood stream, because of a pancreatic insufficiency, that usually involves insufficient production of pancreatic enzyme, and some times insufficient insulin. This high glucose and disruption of normal glucose metabolism places a great stress on the entire organism and can lead to a number of serious and potentially fatal complications. Some of the conditions that come with diabetes are neuropathy, or simply put nerve damage, retinopathy often leading to blindness, atherosclerosis, (hardening of the arteries) loss of peripheral circulation, especially in the feet and legs which later could lead to gangrenes, and kidney failure. Diabetes type 2 or non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus or adult onset diabetes is a classic “disease of civilization”, almost unknown to people eating traditional diets and living in their traditional non sedentary way. What Causes Diabetes? One major culprit is soft drinks, which in their non diet form can contain as much as 10 teaspoons of sugar per can and in diet form, they contain NutraSweet or Aspartame which also elicits an insulin response too. Aspartame and all the other artificial sweeteners elicit a number of neurological and metabolic responses that I will cover in another article. Three Types Of Diabetes Pancreatic insufficiency Over active anterior pituitary gland Excess Glucagon Levels First Type of Diabetes - Pancreatic Insufficiency The majority of type 2 diabetics are overweight or obese especially around the waist (visceral adiposity) …Because of this pancreatic insufficiency, the patient has reduced carbohydrate tolerance, a defective fat metabolism, as well as lipemia, acidosis and ketonuria. Usually a patient who experiences a pancreatic insufficiency, is a slow healer has low immunity and decreased ability to destroy bacteria In healing and in destroying bacteria, we use pancreatic enzymes, and if this is low in the gut, it will be low in the blood too. The activity of the pancreas is opposed in activity by the sympathetic nervous system, and the adrenal glands are opposed in activity specifically by the adrenal medula. With diabetes we always see in an insufficiency of vasoconstriction, or elevated blood pressure, and increases in Epinephrine. Diabetics can have elevated pulse pressure, which is the difference between the systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure, which should be close to 40 and an elevated pulse. This usually leads to arteriosclerosis, maybe even some angina, which is pain in the chest and left arm. Henry Harrower in his research shows that the pancreas produces a hormone which is antagonistic to the sympathetic nervous system and Epinephrine. This hormone stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which reduces blood pressure, and is vasodilating. Harrower recommends pancreatic enzyme, in some cases of angina… to be administered because of its vasodilating effect. He recommends pancreatic enzymes even for menopausal women with high blood pressure, for the same reason. So this specific diabetes that we talked about so far has to do with pancreatic insufficiency. The alpha cells of the pancreas secrete glucagon, a hormone that is released whenever whenever the blood sugar drops too low. Glucagon tells the liver and the muscles to release their stored glycogen as an emergency back up. The beta cells of the pancreas secrete insulin, which, as we have already seen, escort glucose into cells to be burned up for energy. The other function is to transport glucose to the liver and muscle tissue for storage as glycogen, or to cells to be stored as adipose tissue. Second Type of Diabetes - Over Active Anterior Pituitary Gland The next type of diabetes has to do with an over active anterior pituitary gland, which is associated with the decreased utilization of glucose. The insulin levels remain the same, so glucose is not taken into the cell. Both these types of diabetes are associated with too many carbohydrates and too little chromium in the diet (which is being pushed out of the system because of the high sugar consumption, and not replenished because of the mineral deficiency in most foods) Third Type of Diabetes - Excess Glucagon Levels Then there is the third type of adult onset diabetes and this one is the one that has to do with excess glucagon levels. Glucagon is a hormone that raises the blood sugar levels. Only insulin reduces blood sugar levels, but 3 other hormones, adrenaline, cortisol, and glucagon, raise the blood sugar. With all the counteracting forces, it’s very difficult to keep that sugar / insulin balance. Now this “Glucagon” third type of diabetes is not very well known here in North America. In Eastern Europe, the excess glucagon diabetes is treated with a surgical bypass, which diverts the glucagon production from the pancreas away from the liver and into the body’s general circulation. Here in North America, every type of diabetes is treated with insulin and oral hypoglycemic medication in conjunction with diet. This particular “diabetic” diet is notorious for damaging diabetics. (And that is the “diabetic” diet recommended by every dietician…) This type of diabetes usually is associated with the fat burner imbalance. Diabetes type 1 or juvenile diabetes only accounts for 5% of all the diabetic cases. It is a very serious disease which seem to be connected with a very serious trauma. In juvenile diabetes, these individuals are usually slim and emaciated because of increases in metabolic rate from the wasting of protein that is associated with this disease. Side Effects Of Diabetes One of the common side effects of diabetes is polyurea, frequent urination, which causes dehydration, and loss of minerals like sodium magnesium, potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, hydrogen. There is almost always acidosis and bone demineralization. Now scientists are trying to explain why we have such a widespread increase in diabetes. We all know that insulin resistivity or resistance is involved with adult onset diabetes or diabetes mellitus… But what causes it? Doctors determined many years ago that insulin resistance is associated with high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and elevated triglycerides. Since obesity and abdominal obesity in particular was always considered the factor, many doctors concluded that obesity was a cause of this problem. They believed and their belief was reinforced by the fact that when overweight people lost weight, their triglycerides, blood pressure and sugar improved. Some even said that the insulin resistance comes with age, and is inevitable. Researchers have taken lab animals, and fed them high sugar and high fat diets, to check what would happen to them. The consequences were horrible. All lab animals got fat   …but still that wasn’t enough for scientists to draw conclusions… so generally speaking, they are still stuck at this level. Still unsure “what’s causing what” Did we have to be already obese before a high fat diet and high sugar would cause insulin resistance? Did we have to reach a certain age before high fat and high sugar would become dangerous? Thus preserving HMO profits. That’s on top of one of the what is already one of the worst systems of health care per dollar spent. In the area of Cancer alone, new treatments have been received with SWAT Teams, attack dogs, lab burnings, and over 300 cancer-research scientists “dead” over the past 5 years - all under suspicious circumstances… the profits of this industry are enormous - and it stops at nothing to protect them. Cancer books are routinely forced out of circulation by the US Government - without regard to “freedom of the press” or constitutional rights…This is why it’s a big area folks. Better information is often fought savagely, to protect profits. In fact, it’s hard to find good health information on the Internet…a sad comment on the state of democracy, and ethics, but let’s move on with the article…) For example, if a healthy person takes a dose of arsenic, he will develop vomiting, diarrhea, a rapid pulse and prostration. His skin will become cold, and he will grow very anxious. If he continues using arsenic, his nose will be running, he will have a heavy head, cough, and bronchial catarrh. Later he will develop even more specific disturbances of the skin and nervous system. He will have a burning sensation all over, which is relieved by warmth. He will have frequent thirst for sips of water; he will have fear of death, restlessness, and the worsening of symptoms at noon and midnight. Now if any of these symptoms are experienced by a sick person, they can be treated by Arsenicum…. Because you can see that the original substance has attacked the physical level (runny nose, catarrh, cough, etc.) The emotional level (restlessness) and the mental level (fear of death, and prostration) Now - follow me carefully here - because this part is hard for most people to understand: So what is “Arsenicum”. It is arsenic diluted in a special way, take one part arsenic to 99 parts water and mix and shake well ( succussing is extremely rigorous shaking ) … Then take one part of this mixture and mix it again with 99 parts of water - and repeat… This is called dilution and potentization. When you repeat this process 12 times you have *not one atom* of the original substance left in the new mixture. According to the law/constant of Avogadro: To give you some idea how small these doses are - consider a concept of chemistry known as Avagadro’s number: This number is an extremely large number that becomes a negative number, it’s “602″ with twenty one 0’s after that! That represents the number of particles present in any given quantity of substance. It is also known as a “mole”. When you dilute more than 12 times there can’t be any atom left of the original substance. Potencies used commonly today, are 6C, 30C, 200C, 1000C, 10000C and 50000C. EXAMPLE: To give the reader some idea of how extremely diluted, let’s take for example a dilution of 100000C. Let’s describe it in terms of a numerical fraction. Avogadro’s number would correspond roughly to a dilution represented by 1/1000… to a total of 24 zeroes. A potency of 100000C would be represented by a dilution of 1/100000…to a total of 100,000 ZEROES! Inconceivably far beyond the point at which not one atom of original substance is left. Therefore, it has been said that “poison is the remedy for poison…” Hahnemann postulated this principle as “Similia Similibus Curentur” meaning roughly “like is cured by likes.” Ultrahomeopathy is the only medicine where the remedies are tested on human volunteers, or “provers”, to illicit the symptoms they will produce. So now understand that any medicine you put in your body, ie. “Tylenol, Aspirin, Zantac” etc which you take for a symptom, will cause other symptoms…These other symptoms are called by pharmaceutical companies “side effects”. They are not side effects - they are primary effects of the drug quite purposely misunderstood by a for-profit industry. They say “side effects”, because these are the effects that we are not interested in seeing, but everybody who takes that individual drug experiences a multitude of symptoms. It will cause symptoms on the physical level, emotional level, and mental level - even if you just take it for the physical level…depending on your susceptibility level to that substance. EXAMPLE: Taking Tylenol for a headache will come with maybe a bit of nausea, sleepiness, and often constipation. Which is the primary effect? And which is the secondary effect? To look at it accurately - They are all primary effects. So take for example common side effects of pharmaceutical drugs, headache, nausea, constipation, dizziness, death. This has become the number one cause of death in North America - right now. …Depending on how susceptible you are to a substance that is how you will react. The individuals who are extremely susceptible to a drug can have a real anaphylactic shock from something as simple as aspirin. What happened to the Hippocratic Oath of “above all, do no harm…”? …As in the 3rd law of Newtonian physics, “for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction?” Allopathic medicine ignores this principle. How To Improve Sleep or Insomnia With Homeopathy EXAMPLE: Let’s take insomnia. We take a sleeping pill for that, so if you can’t sleep you take a pill that will knock you out. You sleep. This is the “action” of the pill, but the “re-action” of your body to that pill is wakefulness - as anybody who has taken a sleeping pill knows. In general “the next night” you have even more problems sleeping, you take one more pill - which won’t knock you off as hard as the 1st one - and in time the affect of the pill will get less and less and you will need stronger and stronger pills - or more and different kinds of pills. …This is the approach to sleeplessness coming from an Allopathic point of view… they are trying to set forth an action and trying to ignore the equal and opposite reaction. Over a lengthy period of time, you will definitely get increased sleeplessness. The homeopathic approach to the -same symptom- using the earlier “like cures like” - gives a remedy to increase the symptom - a remedy that in a sleepy person would create sleeplessness. Let me explain, by working with the “Law of Similars” the Ultrahomeopath uses the principle of equal and opposite reaction to bring healing. Giving the patient the correct remedy causes sleeplessness - which is an action. The system meets this with an equal and opposite reaction - which is sleepiness. Together - both reactions harmonize into a healing reaction. Ultrahomeopathy is a reactive medicine, one that places the healing impact on the equal and opposite reaction rather than an active medicine, such as Allopathy, that places the forces of cure on the first medicine action, and calls the equally potent reaction, “a side effect.” Can Coffee Improve Sleep? EXAMPLE: A potential remedy for sleeplessness in a good Ultrahomeopathy case-taking is “Coffea” - or coffee in diluted and sucussed or potentized form. Do you understand these laws at play now? If not, please go back and reread this section until it “sinks in”. When you “get it” - then you’ll understand how powerful this is. There are other remedies used for sleeplessness, you have to use the correct remedy that fits the picture of a person on the physical, and emotional and mental level - at the same time. Some practitioners do not understand this principle, so they feel like, that homeopathic remedies can be used like allopathic drugs - which couldn’t be further from the truth. ie. The watered-down, garden-style variety of “health food store homeopathy” - with the thinking that “This remedy is for headache, this remedy is for trauma, this remedy is for colds, this remedy is for allergies.” We’ll have further articles in this area - but this point is key. Improperly used homeopathic remedies can be as damaging as Allopathic drugs. Don’t play games with this. Self-prescribing is sure to hurt you. Example: Take a health food store or beginner homeopath “combination” or “cocktail” of remedies for your asthma - and all 9 will work! 1 for you, the other 8 against you. Get it? At first it might seem “that it worked” as in Allopathy, and later you will have a bigger, future disease to pay… In Ultrahomeopathy, we look at what is different, what makes each person unique, so we can treat the patient with individual precision…. Allopathic medicine looks for what is the same between patients and then applies a uniform treatment to the disease. When I get a patient and they say they are experiencing depression, I always ask for more information - what else are they experiencing? They usually experience a multitude of -simultaneous- symptoms like indigestion, head ache, and some menopausal symptoms. All the symptoms should be considered by the Ultrahomeopathic physician and instead of giving one “canned” remedy for depression, asthma, or headache - we have to treat the whole person with only 1 remedy, of an available 10,000 - instead of guessing and giving a remedy. We treat the whole person. It is not easy but that is what Ultrahomeopathy is. It’s a process of intricate analysis that has hyper-precise results….And takes years of training to accomplish. EXAMPLE: Now think of a multi billion dollar pain killer industry, think of a head ache. IF you take a painkiller for a head ache, does that actually cure that head ache? Of course not. It merely separates you from the sensation of pain. That’s all. It’s not even addressing the cause. Ultrahomeopathy is the only form of medicine that can improve the genetics of future generations. Part of my Old Songs series, a circuslike melody from 2004 telling of little criminals. THIS SONG WAS WRITTEN in two parts. I wrote the lyrics in about 2001, when I was editing my weekly journal of bad poetry, Doggerel, and were published there. Several years later, in 2004, I had a small apartment in Omaha and an abundance of free time, thank to being unable to find frequent work, so I put the lyrics to music. This is a grim little story, and I think the biggest influence was a zine I used to read back in the early '90s called Murder Can Be Fun. The author, John Marr, was and is an inveterate reader, with a taste for crime and disaster stories, and I recall him doing an issue dealing with children. He wrote about several children who had been put to death, and recounted the hideous crimes that had put them on death row. In every instance, the child had just pursued an amoral curiosity, with tragic results, and the children never demonstrated any real understand of what had happened, or what was going to happen, even as they were headed to the gallows. These stories stuck with me, and, so, of course, I decided to write a rather upbeat and carnivalesque song about the subject. I've decided to make lo-fi recordings of old songs I wrote in my 20s and early 30s. Many of these songs are between 15 and 20 years old and have not been preformed since they were written. The first one, "Photographing the Deceased Child," is one of my oldest. I figure I wrote it some time in my late teens, influenced by a book I had looked at in a book store that showed a number of funeral photographs of dead children, where they were posed as though they were sleeping, often with their parents around them. The song was written to sound like an old American religious hymn, and it strikes me as an unusually morbid and mournful composition.
