Whether this is through necessity such as breastfeeding or through personal preference, you hardworking moms deserve a break. The trick is finding time for one. If you’re struggling to find time for yourself, you need to comb through your day and schedule to locate any missed opportunities. If there aren’t any opportunities you’ve missed, you simply need to create one. Move Bedtime Earlier The end of the day is rough on little ones as it is, but when you keep them up past when they should be in bed, their moods get sour fast. Instead of keeping baby up late in the evening to enjoy his company, put him to bed early –as early as six o’clock, and not only will you now have evenings to yourself, you’ll also have a happier and well rested baby to spend time with in the mornings and after work. Take a Lunch Break For mothers who work outside of the home, there is a temptation to work through lunch or to use that time to run errands. Instead, you should make this time your own for something you enjoy doing. Take a class during your lunch hour or use the time to walk around the local shops. Even heading to your car for a nap might be just what you need to refresh yourself. Use Your Babysitters While a husband isn’t a babysitter, you should take him up on his offer to watch the kids while you do whatever you’d like to do. Even if you’d prefer to be with your children, allow your mother to come and help you for the afternoon. Just having an extra pair of hands can lighten the load of motherhood considerably. Less

Labor Day is an excellent excuse to drag out the grill and invite friends over. But don’t let this traditional party exclude your little one. It’s simple to make your Labor Day full of family fun. Plan Around Naps and Bedtime If you’re going to have guests over, you should invite them over with an eye to naptime. Your baby needs rest, especially if she’s about to have so much outside fun. Since Labor Day celebrations can last for hours, you’ll want to disrupt her as little as possible. Perhaps arrange for guests to immediately after her nap and help things wind down or at least move outside when it’s time to put her bed. Invite Families Rather than just inviting couples and adult friends to your party, invite other families with young children. Even if your baby isn’t old enough to play, she will love to watch the other children crawl, toddle and run around. And simply being outside with a bottle of bubbles is enough to entertain the youngsters. Skip the Hard Stuff Although it’s hard to imagine a barbeque without beer and other alcoholic beverages, their presence automatically makes a party less appropriate for children. Unless you’re in complete control of everyone’s behavior after a few drinks, you’d do best to serve ice tea and soft drinks to avoid any behavior or words you’d prefer your child not hear. Less

"We recently saw a study that showed that nature-based recreation in the US has declined about 25% in the last 20 years, after increasing in the 50 years before that."   "So we did our show today in the middle of nature – we camped out! We recorded the show in front of a nice fire while we roasted marshmallows."   Nature comes with benefits Studies have shown that being outdoors has some incredible health benefits. In fact, even just SEEING the outdoors is beneficial. A little while ago, we saw a study that showed that hospital patients with a window recover much faster from surgery than those without. Isn’t that amazing? This same study cited numerous sources that showed that spending time outdoors can lower stress and decrease mental fatigue. Born to be wild We’ve been talking about the benefits of being outdoors. Now let’s look at what the outdoors can do for one specific group of people – kids. This same study we mentioned earlier showed that kids who spend more time outside pay attention better and are less demanding. It’s even been shown to reduce symptoms of Attention Deficit – Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). But going back to where we started, Americans are spending less time outdoors. Miracle-Gro, the garden fertilizer company, just conducted a survey. Nearly 70 percent of the parents who responded said their kids spend less time outdoors than they did when they were kids. "My parents wouldn’t let my sister and me inside until it was dark. In today's show, Amy and I discuss what is age appropriate for motor skills, how many kids have problems with right-left orientation, and how small things like a good pencil grip can make all the difference in a kid's writing ability. Strength and coordination and spatial attributes all contribute to good handwriting, making the overall writing process easier. We are trying out Amy's program at home (This is not a freebie- I paid for it) and John, my younger child, seems to be particularly interested, and it seems to be showing up in his writing. The daily journal page requirement is not overly popular, and I share some of the funnier moments in today's show. But the bottom line if that writing is both a physical and mental task, requiring the coordination of both simultaneously, and it won't improve unless the kids get more practice- so this is the summer of non-stop practice for this skill. Part of my Old Songs series, a circuslike melody from 2004 telling of little criminals. THIS SONG WAS WRITTEN in two parts. I wrote the lyrics in about 2001, when I was editing my weekly journal of bad poetry, Doggerel, and were published there. Several years later, in 2004, I had a small apartment in Omaha and an abundance of free time, thank to being unable to find frequent work, so I put the lyrics to music. This is a grim little story, and I think the biggest influence was a zine I used to read back in the early '90s called Murder Can Be Fun. The author, John Marr, was and is an inveterate reader, with a taste for crime and disaster stories, and I recall him doing an issue dealing with children. He wrote about several children who had been put to death, and recounted the hideous crimes that had put them on death row. In every instance, the child had just pursued an amoral curiosity, with tragic results, and the children never demonstrated any real understand of what had happened, or what was going to happen, even as they were headed to the gallows. These stories stuck with me, and, so, of course, I decided to write a rather upbeat and carnivalesque song about the subject.
