Early Adopter Blinders by Andrew McCaskey In a continuation of some of the comments yesterday, the notes from the Wired blog published today are further commentary. As much as we would like to think that we (podcasters, listeners or readers) we are still pretty far along the extremes of the general consumer curve. Even among those under 30, there are a large number of people to whom a jump into digital everything is a stretch. The majority of the public are in the equal entertainment mode - and as long as traditional TV, radio or movies (distribution method being almost irrelevant) provide the entertainment and diversion experience there is little or no reason to change. This means that the delivery mode (smartphone/iphone, 3G, WiMax) is irrelevant. The killer app is going to be the affordable combination of entertainment experience, location awareness, personalization and content tailoring that can’t be satisfied otherwise. The competition is alternate uses of time and attention, not technologies or delivery methods. That is why mobile anything is so powerful - it allows integration of the entertainment and amusement experience in a variety of venues and social situations. ======= I am looking forward to the Podcamp Boston this weekend. Taking the Twitter Leap by Andrew McCaskey The PodcampOhio meetup was the first chance that I had to interact with a group of bloggers and podcasters that “got” Twitter. Thanks to a great session by Michelle Lentz of WriteTechnology http://write-tech.com for explaining that I was somewhere between the first stage of Twitteration - Getting an account, Signing on just long enough to say “I don’t get it” and then signing off in confusion. Stage Two is where I am right now - but invite you to join in if you’d like Twitter ID axmc. I am trying to develop that balance between the useful and the trivial - but Michelle says that the only way to move forward is to jump and and post. Which I would, if I could figure out when the system will be up long enough for me to get used to making it a part of the normal operation, instead of trying to decide if the system is slow, down, malfunctioning or if I am slow, down and manfunctioning. Daily TIPs: Universal Gigabit, Better Batteries, Kill Switches, & More
Daily TIPs, Broadband, energy Neil Savage wrote: Everyone Needs a G... More
Daily TIPs, Broadband, energy Neil Savage wrote: Everyone Needs a Gigabit by 2015 The government must take steps to push the availability of broadband Internet access if the U.S. is to remain competitive, a telecom law firm is recommending. The Baller Herbst Law Group, in a report to a North Carolina agency, calls for 100 megabits per second of affordable access for all Americans by 2012, with 1 gigabit per second service three years later, Ars Technica reports. Like electrification, it will require government action to ensure poorer and more rural areas get service, the report says. Will VoIP Kill the Telephone? The companies that offer phones calls using Voice-over-Internet Protocol, such as Skype and Vonage, currently piggyback on telephone networks when one of the parties to a call doesn’t have a VoIP device, a strategy that brings the VoIP companies revenue. But an essay at GigaOm argues that this model won’t last forever, as VoIP achieves greater penetration. In the long run, the writer argues, the telephone companies may go the way of the Dodo. Safety Standards Developed for Online Health Records There’s been a lot of talk lately of the advantages to patients of making their medical data available digitally, but one big concern has been keeping the records private. Now, Bloomberg reports, Microsoft, Google, and dozens of consumer groups have come up with a set of standards to safeguard e-records. Among the proposals is giving patients the ability to see just who is looking at their records. McCain’s Battery Prize Gets Mixed Reception Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain this week suggested offering $300 million to the person who can build the next generation of battery for plug-in hybrid automobiles. Technology Review asks a pair of MIT battery experts what they think of the idea. While one says the prize will focus attention on a key problem, the other feels that, without benchmarks, the idea is mainly a political stunt. Toyota Plans Plug-in Hybrid in Two Years And speaking of batteries, Toyota will offer two new hybrid models in 2010, including a new plug-in hybrid, AutoWeek reports. To that end, the company is ramping up production of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for the cars. It’s also investing in new battery technology, considering possible chemistries that include a metal-air battery. Much Work Needed to Make Renewables Affordable It’s going to take a major effort for the United States to use renewable sources for a quarter of its energy needs by 2025, a new report says. The study, from the RAND Corporation, was commissioned by the non-profit Energy Future Coalition, which has set a “25 by ‘25″ goal for renewables, according to Science Daily. The study warns that, if done wrong, a conversion to that much renewable energy could be expensive and have a negative impact on land use. ‘Digital Manners’ Face Threat of Abuse With police installing remotely operated kill switches on buses, and the Pentagon seeking to do the same on airplanes to prevent the vehicles being used as terrorist weapons, Microsoft is looking to expand the concept with a technology called “Digital Manners Policies.” Theaters might use the technology to switch off DMP-equipped cell phones, while museums could shut down cameras. An essay in Wired wonders how to prevent such capabilities from being abused, by a burglar shutting down security cameras, say, or a terrorist turning off the wrong airplane engine. Musion - Another Ticket Sold by Andrew McCaskey The Musion system for holographic projection is all done with light and mirrors. And, it is all done on an industrial stage for major events. The system is explained in today’s video - and is as close to the full sized illusion of the Start War’s hologram “Help me Obi-wan Kanobi” as we have seen. But, with the YouTube details above, it will only be a few months before the latest edition of Make Magazine has the desktop version, and and acceptable version that is the size (and price) of one of those expensive Sub-Zero Refrigerator-Freezer units can’t be far behind. What’s going to be the effect of that technology on business interaction and travel ? We are at the inflection point where the expense of air travel or driving forces the close examination of tools beyond desktop sharing or simulated conferencing (such as Alice Street). Panopticon for Sale by Andrew McCaskey The Rolling Stone article on the surveillance technology being deployed in China is one of the most chilling to be published in many years. The most memorable phrase linking a police state to “the crack cocaine of capitalism” , and the fact that the technology is being supplied to China, in the main, by US companies such as IBM and General Electric should give us all a moment of pause. How to FAX over VOIP on the Internet

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed Brightstar wrote: “I keep hearing about how hard it is for faxes to work through VOIP. I’ve prepared a top 5 list of things you can do to make sure your faxes have the best chance of going through.” Set your baud rate to 9600 and turn off Error Correction Mode. The slower your Fax goes, the more likely it is to go through without errors. Most VOIP providers are unable to support the default baud of 33600 baud due to the amount of data that has to go through. Error Correction Mode was designed for faxing PSTN to PSTN. Voice over IP often has extra noise added due to jitter instabilities in the connection as it travels from one fax to another. This causes false positives for Error Correction Mode because it will cause the fax to loop over and over trying to fix these noise errors, when it can’t be fixed. This will end in a communication error usually. Use a provider that supports T.38 - T.38 is an audio codec designed for Faxing over VOIP. it allows for more detail and better looking images as well as stability by creating redundancy in the RTP stream. Set your packetization to 10 milliseconds or less. The more header there is in the stream, the less likely jitter and instabilities in your internet connection are going to cause a synchronization error. (You may need to contact your provider to make this happen if your box is locked, such as if you use Vonage.) Keep on top of your ISP. Stability in your internet connection are paramount in making sure that faxes are successful. Speed tests can help you track this. Look for an advanced speed test that offers more than just and upload and download speed. A personal favorite of mine is located at MyVoipSpeed (Note: An up to date Java version is required) which is really nice because once you’re done, you can click on the detailed analysis link and then call up your ISP and give them the URL for the test so they can see what’s going on. When all else fails, call your VOIP provider. There may be issues in the routing of your calls that are causing problems. Only your VOIP provider’s call processing team will be able to fix this kind of thing. Have your provider test from a PSTN line and then their own VOIP line. If they can send through PSTN but not their own VOIP line, it’s a routing issue on their own end. Bonus Tip!Don’t even think about faxing using Voice over IP on a satellite or wireless connection. These kinds of connections are too unpredictable, and add a huge amount of latency that will make it impossible for fax machines to sync up properly. Instruction Manuals!! SNRM: Spike's Conscience Speaks
The Spike Nesmith Rage Machine

As Fred Thompson drops out of the republican race for the whitehouse, Spike talks about why it’s a good thing he’s gone and examines his frighteningly extremist record. Politics talk ends at 22 minutes and eight seconds in, by the way. That’s after Spike’s talk radio conscience weighs in. Spike will deal with “this much freaky and scary” when it comes to Google’s information gathering (and their ‘official blob’) but is well impressed that they’re splashing some cash on worthy causes and generating almost a third of their power through solar. All whilst Yahoo is going down the tubes. He suggests a new way to deal with the UK’s problem of the failures of private prisons, talks about prostitution and uses the phrase “here’s the rub” without tying it into anything sexual (shame!), a how-to guide for making a few extra bucks with your webcam, haggis and the lies of the guys who got attacked by a tiger. A two-man Rage Machine for the last feature-length show of the year, with Spike joined via the magic of Skype by Chimp Jones (of the internet’s “Chimpcasting” fame) to talk rubbidge. There’s belches by request and the shredder makes it’s debut, to deal with the news stories that don’t pass muster. The two talk about the “War on Christmas” and whether it’s anyone else’s business how one spends one’s festive season, and whether the lumpen prolitariat have sacrificed quality for quantity in media. There’s a thrilling second-hand story about the primary school event of the 1980s that attracted all and sundry to see “hands on the floor”, the future of sex, the future of TV and what the aliens will unearth in the ruins of the Earth. In the news, New Jersey gets sent to the shredder, why “values” are on the backburner for republicans and the bank whose half-million pay-it-forward PR campaign gets some rare praise from Spike. All that plus grand theft bike, christmas beer and “CSI: Furry Boot”. Happy Holidays! Less
