Sony Vaio UX 64GB solid state upgrade
This Sony Vaio UX50 came with a 30GB hard drive from the factory. [... More
This Sony Vaio UX50 came with a 30GB hard drive from the factory. [Jorn] wanted to do an upgrade and move to solid state, so he started hacking away. He ended up with a total of 64GB of solid state storage crammed into the computer. The hard drive was replaced with a 4GB compact flash drive and the rest is spread through out the device. Apparently any crevice or crack in the Sony UX50 can have memory shoved into it. He managed to somehow get 60GB of storage in there through various USB extensions and adapters. Notice the sticker on the inside of the case. Is this the latest fad? Decorating the inside of the unit where only you know it exists? Less

November 1st means that registration for ShmooCon 2009 has opened. The DC hacker convention is entering the fifth year. They’re releasing the tickets in blocks; after today’s are gone the next won’t be available till December 1st. Today is also the closing of first round consideration for their call for papers, but you still have another month before the final deadline. We’ve always enjoyed our time at ShmooCon. In 2008 we saw talks on cracking GSM encryption and recovering data from SSDs. Less

iPhone screengrab issues
This is unfortunately another story we missed out on while we were ... More
This is unfortunately another story we missed out on while we were trying to keep things from burning down. We told you that [Jonathan Zdziarski] was going to demonstrate iPhone lock code bypassing in a webcast. The real surprise came when he pointed out that the iPhone takes a screenshot every time you use the home button. It does this so it can do the scaling animation. The image files are presumably deleted immediately, but as we’ve seen before it’s nearly impossible to guarantee deletion on a solid state device. There’s currently no way to disable this behavior. So, even privacy conscious people have no way to prevent their iPhone from filling up storage with screenshots of all their text message, email, and browsing activities. Hopefully Apple will address this problem just like they did with the previous secure erase issue. O’Reilly promises to publish the full webcast soon. [via Gizmodo] Less

Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST New Block D Auction by Andrew McCaskey As cumbersome as the Block D auction appears to be it is going to have one desirable effect. It’s only a shame that we did not have one thirty years ago. Block D was pulled during the auction last spring, as no bidder was willing to meet the $1.3 Billion reserve price, encumbered with the requirement that the allocations be shared with public health and safety systems on a secondary basis. The new auction is really two sets: one auction at the reduced reserve price of around $750Million for nationwide license to the spectrum block, the other for around sixty regional licenses that must be used for expansion using either LTE or WiMax technologies. As I understand the plan, if the nationwide block meets the reserve price, the winner gets to take all, including the public safety shared arrangement. If the nationwide block does not sell for the asking price, then the parallel regional licenses will go. The highest bidders and the winning technology will take all. WiMax or LTE, the losing bidders and technology will really lose. The winner will be named as the technology of choice. Contrast the crazy quilt of analog, CDMA,TDMA,GSM and additional frequency variants that we tolerated for thirty years in the US. That lack of standard and “letting the market decide” took time that can’t be afforded today. At least someone is trying to make a decision. The market still decides - it just decides a lot more quickly. Holiday Twitter Tech by Andrew McCaskey I think that I am getting the hang of some of this Twittering. Experienced users are probably too polite to let me know what a dolt I am being on the system. - But, as Michelle Lentz emphasized you have to jump in and keep swimming so that you will be able to ‘get’ Twitter. I am not even keeping up with the rest of the Tech Podcasters - many or most of whom have moved on to FriendFeed. I have to take it one step at a time. So, if you’d like to follow along, please look me up as Twitter id axmc. Professionally, I am keeping up with folks on LinkedIn. Not that there is the absense of professionalism on Twitter - it’s just different. I just received an invite from a researcher who is planning to match up a group of Baby Boomers with some GenY counterparts. The plan is to seed the conversation with some debatable topics and let the generation wars begin. It’s going to be fun. ========== This is the start of the Independence Day Weekend July 4th - so I am taking the day off and there will be no show published Thursday night (for air Friday, July 4th). I’ll be back at the regular time with an episode for Monday, July 7th. Have a good Holiday ! Click to view videos submitted or recommended by other SDR podcast listeners. . . Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST Merged Video Experience by Andrew McCaskey I guess that I should not be surprised by the study on how television is consumed by most people between 9 and 17 - in tandem with online . The study concluded that at least 33% of those watching American Idol were online at the same time, and that with just a little nudge in the right direction, they could be coaxed to open up a page for a richer media experience. Another 45% were also on some sort of social media site or IM, just in case things got boring with the broadcast, the program’s web page, the embedded ads, or other amusements. I should have known, because that is exactly how I consume media - except that my mix includes a program I am watching realtime on HD over the air while something buffers into the Tivo and I have the laptop fired up with Skype IM active, a browser or two open. And, in a last gesture to tradition, a paper folded open off to the side of the laptop. Other than the realtime coupling offered by the teenager’s IM it’s pretty close. No wonder there’s such a problem holding the audience. Click to view videos submitted or recommended by other SDR podcast listeners. . . Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST Good News in Transmission by Andrew McCaskey Two greatly encouraging articles today - one, the 100Gbps backbone test by Comcast using Wave Division multiplexing on the same fiber as a currently operating 40Gbps link, and the other - from a Verizon study - on what they call P4P - enhanced Peer to Peer transmission that can increase speed and capacity up to 600 percent compared with traditional P2P schemes. Un-fettered by the regulatory and business model aspects - it’s a real thrill to contemplate the arrival, within a few years of routine 100Mbps DOCIS 3.0 service that will be permitted by these backbone technologies in the cable world. As the slow roll out of fiber to the home favored by Verizon continues, those sorts of speeds in the transmission world are nothing but good news. The challenge will be: Who benefits ? This incredible capacity, held up under net neutrality - is going to be a boon to all . Slapped under proprietary content walls, the balance of power will slip once again from the edges of the network, where innovation occurs, to a hierarchical walled garden. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen ,and that the political will to make sure that it does not emerges by fall. Click to view videos submitted or recommended by other SDR podcast listeners. . .
