iPod | 4:17 | To Embed or Email: click above One of the profound yet not often acknowledged (by me) benefits of living in community with other people is that some choose to be the ones who go forward into the unknown, and those adventures ultimately inform and inspire the rest of us. I often think of myself as one of those explorers. Sometimes though, I feel pressure to have to always be on the front line. Today's episode honors those others who have shown me the way, especially my parents, Blanche and Bill. Hawaiian Word: Loli: change, transformation P S We are using Viddler. Get Ahead by Getting Out

Quite a while ago, we heard an interview with Bjorn Ulvaeus, one of the members of the band Abba. He described how he came up with the idea for the song, Take a Chance on Me. He said he was out jogging. The rhythm of his steps just kept screaming these words to him … Take a chance, take a chance, take a chance, chance, chance. Take a chance, take a chance, take a chance, chance, chance. His time away turned into a song! You just never know where a great idea is going to come from. Isn’t it funny how many times it will happen in a place that you’d least expect – like in the shower! —— —— Mix it up Sometimes it pays to vary your routine. If you always follow the same routine, you can get stale. The answer is simple – mix it up! Take a different way to work. Get to work later. Take lunch at a different time. Hang out with a different group of people. Whatever it may be, variety can spark new ideas. Get out Mixing it up is a great preventive measure. But what do you do when you’re already stuck? We’ve noticed that getting out is a great way to get unstuck. So try changing your scenery – go for a walk, move around – even if it’s just for a short time. We’ve found even just a few minutes away – from our computers, from our desks – sometimes leads us to the answer for which we were looking. Even Beethoven needed to do it As incredibly creative as Beethoven was, even he would get stuck every once in awhile. To get ahead, he would get out. In the book, Beethoven: The Man And The Artist As Revealed In His Own Words, authors Friedrich Kerst and Henry Edward Krehbiel quote the great composer: “You ask me where I get my ideas. That I cannot tell you with certainty; they come unsummoned, directly, indirectly, – I could seize them with my hands, – out in the open air; in the woods; while walking; in the silence of the nights; early in the morning; incited by moods, which are translated by the poet into words, by me into tones that sound, and roar and storm about me until I have set them down in notes.” If Beethoven were alive today, maybe he would add “at the coffee shop” to his list! Poem of the Week: Annabel Lee
Great Books Audio - A Free Audio Book Podcast of Classic Literature and Poetry
Annabel Lee is the last complete poem composed by American author a... More
Annabel Lee is the last complete poem composed by American author and poet Edgar Allen Poe . Like many of Poe’s poems, it explores the theme of the death of a beautiful woman. The narrator, who fell in love with Annabel Lee when they were young, has a love for her so strong that even angels are jealous. He retains his love for her even after her death. There has been debate over who, if anyone, was the inspiration for Annabel Lee. Elmira Shelton, Poe’s childhood sweetheart, considered herself as Annabel Lee, even though she outlived the author by many years. And, though many other women have been suggested, Poe’s wife Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe , who died two years prior to the poem’s writing, is one of the more credible candidates. Annabel Lee was published two days after Poe’s death on October 7, 1849. Famous People Who Succeeded by Not Listening
There’s a great page on the Emory University site called They... More
There’s a great page on the Emory University site called They Did Not Give Up. It shows things that were said to, or situations that were faced by, a number of famous people. . . Some examples The first book that Dr. Seuss wrote was rejected by 27 publishers. The first time Sigmund Freud presented his ideas to his fellow scientists, he was booed from the stage. His response? He returned to his office and kept writing A newspaper editor fired Walt Disney because “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” Disney declared bankruptcy several times before he built Disneyland, which was rejected by the City of Anaheim the first time he proposed it. And speaking of Walt Disney, he made a mistake of his own when he didn’t hire Charles Schultz. For Schultz, though, that was par for the course. Even the high school yearbook staff didn’t think much of his work – every cartoon he submitted to them was rejected. After his first audition, the casting director told Sidney Poitier to “stop wasting people's time and go out and become a dishwasher or something." Poitier resolved at that moment to devote his life to acting. Sometimes it doesn’t pay to listen . My first real at-risk business was a Ben Franklin franchise in my hometown. It’s a small town so back-to-school is a bigg season. We wanted to be open in time to capitalize on it. My franchise representative told me it couldn’t be done. His boss said it couldn’t be done. We determined we were going to do it. So we did! We opened to throngs of people patronizing our store and a bigg splash by the local media splash. It was a hit! . Sometimes it pays to listen and adapt . When I was in high school, I tried out for the basketball team. I made the first cut. I made the second cut. When the final cut came out, I looked at the list and my name wasn’t on it. I looked again. I couldn’t believe it! But I hadn’t made the team. So I took up music. I won awards. I even won a scholarship. My failure to make the basketball team allowed for bigger success in music than I could have ever imagined! . So it’s kind of funny. Sometimes it pays to ignore what people tell us. At other times, our disappointments fuel our bigg success. The trick is knowing when to press on with what you’re doing and when to move on to press on. Subscribe to The Bigg Success Show in iTunes. Subscribe to the Bigg Success feed. Overcoming Fear One Quote at a Time
“Worry gives a small thing a big shadow.” Swedish prove... More
“Worry gives a small thing a big shadow.” Swedish proverb A problem may start out as a small little thing. But worry makes it grow. It becomes all consuming. You can’t stop thinking about it. Your heart beats faster. You can’t fall asleep or you wake up and can’t get back to sleep. It follows you, even when you try to forget about it. It turns to fear. . . “Fear grows in darkness; if you think there's a bogeyman around, turn on the light.” Dorothy Thompson We’re afraid because we’re in the dark. We don’t know what to expect. The future seems so uncertain. It frightens us. To get past that fright, turn on the light! Gather some research. Study the issue. Ask for help. Do anything you can to create more certainty in the face of uncertainty. You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do. Eleanor Roosevelt We fear things we think we can’t do. We fear those problems for which we don’t have a solution. We fear what we’ve never done. Conquer fear by confronting it head-on. Take action. When you do something, you gain control. By gaining control, fear is diminished. I'm not afraid of storms, for I'm learning how to sail my ship. Louisa May Alcott When a storm blows through, there may be damage or there may not. But you faced it! You learned from it – things you did well and things you would change. You gained confidence to tackle yet another situation. We all feel fearful at times. Don’t let it consume you. Confront it head on with a plan of attack. Take action. Then learn. You’ll only become stronger! Subscribe to The Bigg Success Show in iTunes. Subscribe to the Bigg Success feed. Related posts These Five Great Quotes Weave the Story of Our Lives Less
