Free Ringtones and Alerts: UnHelpful RoBot!!!

So I finally finished the editing for my UnHelpful Robot series of ringtones and alerts. I designed the alerts around my Windows Mobile phone, so there might be some alerts in here which only work for the features of a WM phone, and I might be missing alerts for other types of phones.

My general inspiration for U.R. comes from classic “evil” sci-fi computers. They always seemed to deliver vital information just a split second too late for the villain to do anything about it. Almost as if they had their own nefarious goals to fulfill. A perfect example would be the Nod Computer from C&C. It always seemed to let me know one of my units was under attack just after it was to late to save them.

THIS IS JUST A TEASER! There are too many files to easily post them as individual podcasts, and I cut the bit rate in half for size purposes.

My friend Jon Vanderbrug and I stood on this bridge watching massive cranes load coal on one side of the river and huge dump trucks move loads of rock on the other. In the distance was an imposing railroad elevating bridge and the commuter-packed skyway. Suddenly behind us a bell began to ring and our bridge began to open to allow passage of a coal barge, driving the seagulls wild and sending us running for the bank.

Here’s a bit of technical background. One of the things you need to record, when you’re shooting on a soundstage, or for that matter, on location, is the noise that the place makes all by itself. The noise of the room. I know, it sounds silly, but each place has its own special sound, and it’s important to record that sound so that later, when you have to fix an audio track, or record a wild line, you have something to put underneath it so that it blends in with the rest of the audio track that was recorded live…

The result is that we can “hear” the interaction of industry and nature, be reminded of how our actions affect nature (including air and climate) and through this awareness, take steps for positive change. Many of the sounds come from recordings Josh made during one day in March when I took him on a “sound tour” of Calumet. Being a rainy day, there wasn’t an enormous number of clear nature sounds, but you’ll be surprised at what we heard.”

Composed entirely of the sounds of an antique and misused record. This piece is an examination of the hiss underlying albums and a kind of exploration into why it is such a comforting sound to so many people. At different speeds and in different contexts, these background noises, which normally go unheard because of their ubiquity in the recording, take prominence in ‘Character’. As the tessitura and tempo of the music slow down, it is hoped that the listener will find something comforting in the humming narcosis- a retreat to the origin we all share.
