<p>Popular gadget site, Engadget, has a pretty <a href="http://engadget.com/entry/1234000027063418/">handy guide</a> for converting a <span class="caps">DVD</span> to a format which can be used on the new video-enabled iPods using some free (or almost free) software. Unlike the <a href="http://www.tipmonkies.com/2005/10/13/rip-dvd-movies-to-your-ipod-w-free-software-osx">previous guide</a> we mentioned a few days ago, this one is for Windows users. All you need to get started is <a href="http://dvdx.sourceforge.net/">DVDx</a> (free) and a copy of <a href="http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Multimedia_and_Graphics/Video_and_Animation_Tools/Xilisoft_Video_Converter.html">XiliSoft Video Converter</a> (shareware, <span class="caps">USD35</span>) or any <span class="caps">AVI</span> to <span class="caps">MOV</span> converter.
The guide is a pretty quick read and the process is fairly painless, though it will take a few hours to convert each movie, so if you’ve got your hands on a new iPod, give it a try and let me know how it went.</p>

We covered some serious ground on Apple’s
product announcements last week, as well as at DigitalLife on Friday. There wasn’t a whole ton going down, but some
interesting business with T-Mobile and their new Sidekick IIs, a brief run-in with Apple VP Greg Joswiak, and a little
bit of hands-on with the Zen Vision and Akimbo’s new Media Center software. Of course the big news, however, was Sony
Ericsson’s new decked out Walkman phone, the W900 , which perhaps we go into a little too much detail on. But that’s why
you listen in, right?

<p>If you brought your bible, and I hope you did, please turn to Daniel chapter 1. Today we are beginning a verse-by-verse study through the book of Daniel.
As a kid, I was very susceptible to hero worship. Throughout my childhood it seemed I was always enthralled with one hero or another. Sometimes it was a fictional character, sometimes it was a real person. In first grade it was Superman. I thought the man of steel was just the ultimate. I had a blue pajama top and a red towel that I talked my mom into sewing S’s on, and I would spend hours “flying” around the backyard. My friends and I would get into debates about the strengths and merits of different super heroes, and I was always the main Superman advocate. “Superman’s the best. What good is Aqua Man? How many bad guys can you fight underwater? And Spider Man. He runs out of web fluid. And Batman doesn’t have any super powers at all. He’s just got a cool car and a bunch of gadgets that someone else made for him.” After my Superman phase came my Evel Knievel phase. This phase was a little more dangerous. In emulation of our hero, my friends and I would set up ramps to jump our bikes over out in the street, because, of course, that was where the traffic was. And you know that banana-seat huffy bikes, as well as nine-year old bodies, are just built for flying through the air at high speed and landing on asphalt. Didn’t take too many spills to realize that I didn’t want to make a career out of the bike jumping thing. If I got that bunged up jumping over 4 tonka trucks, I didn’t think I’d be jumping over the Snake River Canyon anytime soon. As a young teenager, my interests turned to music or for what passed as music in the 80s and one of my heroes was Eddie Van Halen. And of course my parents were just thrilled that I was aspiring to be a spandex-clad, drugged-out rocker.
Childhood heroes are revered as such because of childish values. Kids look up to people that they think they want to be like. A number of years ago, researchers for the World Almanac and Book of Facts asked 2000 American eighth-grade students to name prominent people they admired and wanted to be like. Nearly every on of the personalities who were named was either an entertainer or an athlete. Columnust Sidney J. Harris made a great observation: He said that the heroes and heroines created by our society are people who have made it big, but not necessarily people who have done big things.
My heroes are different these days. Because, as a man, I’ve come to recognize that, in the big scheme of things, it matters very little how fast you can play a guitar solo, or how many cars you can jump a motorcycle over, or even how fast you can fly. The only true heroic quality that anyone can aspire to is Godliness. Because godliness embodies all qualities that are truly heroic: strength, integrity, faithfulness, patience, steadfastness and courage.
Well, before us today is the story of a true, godly hero. Daniel is someone worth emulating. As we’ll see, he had many impressive qualities, but what stands out most is his godliness. That’s the quality that God Himself took note of in Daniel. Three times in this book, Daniel is addressed by an Angel of Heaven as one who is highly esteemed.
Dan. 9:23 “… you are highly esteemed. Therefore, consider the message and understand the vision:
We all want to be highly esteemed in the eyes of people. But trying to convince the world to esteem us is exhausting and futile. I believe God put that need and desire to be esteemed in us that we might seek to be esteemed by Him, by heaven’s standards. To be esteemed by the consensus in Heaven is far better. And heaven’s esteem doesn’t come because you’re exceptionally strong, or exceptionally talented or beautiful, or rich. Rather…
Is. 66:2 “This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word
The story and book of Daniel is largely about prophecy. In fact, the book of Daniel is one of, if not the most, important prophetic book in the bible. Through Daniel, God communicates to us extensive and important information about the future. The book of Daniel is the key to unlocking many of the mysteries of other prophetic portions of the bible. Jesus cites Daniel extensively in the Olivet Discourse in Matthew 24 and 25. Paul’s words about the end times in 1 and 2 Thessalonians make a lot more sense in light of the book of Daniel. And don’t even try to study the book of Revelation without a healthy understanding of Daniel.
Some Christians claim to not be interested in prophecy. That’s regrettable, because prophecy and prophetic accuracy is one of the distinguishing characteristics of Christianity. It’s one of the things that sets Christianity apart from other religions and belief systems. The bible is the only holy book that claims to predict the future, and it gets it right. There is no prophecy in the Koran. There is no fulfilled prophecy in the writings of Hinduism or Buddhism. The book of Daniel is the most prophetically authenticated book in the world. Like I said, Daniel contains a lot of information about events that are still in the future. But many of the things that were still future in Daniel’s day are now past, and we have the advantage of looking back and seeing that many of Daniel’s predictions have already been fulfilled. Written in the 6th century BC, it foretold many events that unfolded in the following centuries, before the birth of Christ, and it did so with razor-sharp precision and accuracy. So many of the prophecies in Daniel were fulfilled that many so-called “higher critics” don’t know what to do with it. They claim that it had to have been written after the fact. They say it has to be a forgery, because the things that Daniel predicted about the Babylonian empire and the Persian Empire, and the Greek and the Roman empires, came true so accurately, that there’s no way it could have been written before the events actually took place. There was a guy who lived around the year 300 AD, a Neo-Platonist philosopher named Prophyry, who came out with a theory about how the book of Daniel could be so accurate. He believed it was written, not in 600 BC, but in 50 AD, after many of the events prophesied in Daniel had transpired. He believed it wasn’t actually written by Daniel, but by a forger claiming to be Daniel. Porphyry’s theory has been picked up by many bible critics today, who have attempted to hack Daniel apart with the sharpest critical knives, but have been unable to do so.
Well, I’m convinced that these “higher critics” are so called, not because of their higher intellect or their higher scholarly standards, but because they are high on something. You’d have to be stoned out of your gourd to not recognize the blatant historical evidence of the authenticity of Daniel and the evidence for an early authorship date. I’ll show you what I mean. Many of these critics say that Daniel was written after 50 AD. Well, a real foundational problem with that is that the book of Daniel is in the Septuagint. The Septuagint was the Greek translation of the Hebrew OT. It was translated in 285 BC. And you open the earliest copies of the Septuagint, and there is the book of Daniel in its entirety. Portions of Daniel dating back to the third century BC have also been found in some of the caves of the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran. Whoever that 50 AD forger was, he must have been pretty slick to slip a copy of his work into both the Septuagint and the Dead Sea scrolls. Another problem for the critics: The book of Daniel has many prophecies about the Greek Empire, which hadn’t arisen yet in Daniel’s day, and there were specific prophecies about Alexander the Great. The historian Josephus records how, in 322 BC, as Alexander the Great marched towards Jerusalem intending to conquer it, he was met by a procession led by the Jewish high priest Jaddua. They escorted Alexander and his troops into the city. As they did so, Jaddua showed Alexander the book of Daniel, in which the Greek empire had been specifically identified over 200 years earlier as the instrument that would overthrow the Persians. As he saw his military success described in advance of it happening, Alexander was so amazed and delighted that he not only spared the city of Jerusalem. but agreed to many requests made by the Jewish people. Again, this is recorded history. Josephus is not a disputed source, and if he records that Daniel was read by Alexander in 322 BC, the critics have a hard, no, an impossible time, substantiating their claims that Daniel was written in 50 AD. The historical evidence overwhelmingly supports the fact that Daniel was written by Daniel in the 6th century BC and contains some of the most dramatically fulfilled prophecy ever poured forth onto parchment.
But the strongest authenticating factor of Daniel is that Jesus authorized and endorsed it. In Matthew 24:15, Jesus confirms that Daniel was a prophet and the author of the book of Daniel. So we read Daniel to marvel at genuinely fulfilled prophecy and also to ponder and wonder at what has yet to be fulfilled. But there is a lot more to prophecy than just data about the past and the future. There is as much application in Daniel as there is information. Prophecy doesn’t just have past and future implications. Like the rest of scripture, if you will open your heart and mind, God will use it to change your life today. Rom. 15:4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope
That’s why every Christian ought to be a student of prophecy. Because, through prophecy, God has a wealth of wisdom and encouragement to give us for today, for here and now. And just as Daniel is the hero of this book, God will use the truth of the scriptures and the power of His Spirit to make us the heroes in our own stories. If we will open our eyes, ears, and hearts to Him, He will use this study, these 15-20 weeks in Daniel, to further transform our lives, to forge in us godliness, and to make us like Christ.
We need a little bit of history before we dive into the text. Briefly, it was around…
•990 BC- King David takes the throne in Jerusalem as king over the nation of Israel.
•950 BC- King Solomon builds the first temple.
•928 BC- Israel splits into two nations: Judah in the south and Israel in the north.
•721 BC- Assyria conquers the northern kingdom of Israel, and Israel ceases to exist as a nation.
God protected the southern kingdom of Judah from Assyria. Fast forward 100 years. God had spared Judah, but their gratitude was short-lived. Persistent disobedience, rebellion, and idolatry from God’s people made the nation more and more unstable, more vile and wicked. God gave them many opportunities to turn from their sin and turn back to Him, but instead of humbling themselves and repenting, they persisted in their rebellion and disregard of Him. Through many prophets, God warned that if they continued in their sin, what had happened to the northern kingdom of Israel would happen to them, but those warnings were not heeded, and in 605, God allowed Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, the third great world empire that had recently defeated Assyria, to invade and conquer Judah. and took captives back to Babylon. There would be two more invasions from Nebuchadnezzar, one in 597 BC and one in 587 BC, and by the end of all three, the land of Judea would be left virtually uninhabited, in ruins, and it would stay like that for 70 years. . God’s patience is plentiful, but it’s not permanent. How many people are like micro versions of a rebellious nation, receiving chance after chance from the Lord, but never turning to Him? The very best time to respond to God when He’s dealing with you is right now. The book of Daniel begins with the first Babylonian invasion, when God essentially said to Judah “No more patience. It’s time for punishment.” And so we begin, Daniel 1, verse 1.
II. Deportation to Babylon *Read verses 1-8. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon is a fascinating character. He’s a mighty man. He’s a messed up man. He’s a mighty messed up man. And we’ll look a lot closer at his life in upcoming weeks. The location of his national capital is fascinating as well. The scripture says that the temple of his god was in “Babylonia.” Most other translations say “Shinar.” It’s the same place. It’s in modern day Iraq, about 60 miles south of Bagdad. You probably know that, for 25 years, Saddam Hussein poured hundreds of millions of dollars into an attempt to rebuild Babylonia on the ancient site. I don’t think he’ll finish it now. Shinar, Babylon, was also the place where false religion was born. Way back in the book of Genesis, many centuries before Nebuchadnezzar was born, the plains of Shinar was where the population of the earth gathered and began to build the tower of Babel not long after the Noahic flood. And the origins of the first systematized false religion can be traced to the plains of Shinar, and the very first king of the area, a guy named Nimrod, and his queen Semiramis. So what I’m saying is, this area is rich with historical and spiritual significance. We’ll talk a lot more about that in upcoming weeks. But today I want to spend the remainder of our time talking about these four young men who were removed from their home, their life and everything familiar, and had to essentially grow up in a completely foreign place. Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. You see, Nebuchadnezzar had something of a “re-patronization plan” for some of the more promising Judaean exiles. They were to enter a three-year training program, become schooled in all manner of Babylonian literature, learning, custom and statecraft, and then would enter the Nebuchadnezzar’s employ. Among the first candidates were these four young men, presumably in their teens: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. By ancient Mesopotamian standards these were “good boys,” “fine young men.” They were evidently of royal blood, and they showed great promise and aptitude. Particularly Daniel was the kind of guy that seemed to have everything going for him- position, intelligence, physical impressiveness, etc. Yet his life, we’ll see, is most strongly characterized by his full devotion to the Lord. From an earthly perspective, some people seem to have everything going for them, and that can be a hindrance to their devotion to the Lord. However, it’s nice to see the occasional exception. At our mission committee meeting last week, Cleo was telling me about an opportunity she got to hear Elizabeth Elliot’s memories of her late husband, missionary Jim Elliot, who was killed on the mission field. Jim Elliot was a Daniel kind of guy. Smart, good looking, athletic, and loved the Lord with all his heart. Mrs. Elliot shared her college memories of Jim, how handsome he was, and how, on the last day of school, all the girls would line up to have him sign their yearbook. She said that, in all the girls’ yearbooks, he wrote 2Timothy 2:4 No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs — he wants to please his commanding officer. Well, somehow Mrs. Elliot managed to catch his eye and his heart, and she shared his fervency for the Lord. After they were married, instead of pursuing success here in the states, he chose to go to the jungles of Ecuador to bring the gospel to the native tribes there. And this remarkable, talented, impressive guy who loved the Lord with all his heart, was thrust through with a spear by the Auca Indians. Elizabeth. Elliot told her husband’s remarkable story in the book “Through the Gates Of Splendor,” and today Jim Elliot is kind of like a Christian legend. Elizabeth eventually remarried. How’d you like to be that guy? People would always be saying “Wow, you’re Mr. Elliot? Oh, you’re another guy. Sorry. Don’t want to talk to you.” Who would want to marry a widow of a Christian hero? Like, if Billy Graham dies, do you think any older gentleman is going to call and ask Ruth on a date? Some men of faith just seem larger than life. Daniel was that kind of man.
Now, I think true heroes of faith are forged in the fires of adversity. Heroic qualities are nurtured when someone finds himself in less than ideal circumstances, in challenging circumstances. One of the first challenges confronting these four Judaean teenagers is the temptation to break with the dietary laws of their people and their God. Now, we’ve talked about this before, how important the dietary laws of the Old Covenant were to the Jewish people. Because of the cross, most of those laws are now obsolete, but back then, before the work of salvation was complete, God expected them to keep the dietary laws. And the kings menu obviously wasn’t kosher. These boys could have reasoned “But he’s the king, it’s his table, and who are we to refuse his command? After all, we’re a long ways from home. We won’t be going to temple anytime soon. I’m sure God would understand if we go ahead and have a ham sandwich here in Babylon.” They were in a situation and a culture that pretty much demanded that they compromise their beliefs. Had I been in the same situation, I probably could have thought of a host of reasons why it was okay to conform, at least a little bit. We’re obviously not in exile, but it’s sure apparent how great a challenge it is to be godly in our culture. Our culture pressures us on every side to sin. Every day in so many ways we’re being enticed to capitulate, to compromise and to cave in. I see three lies that the world tried to use in the lives of these young exiled boys to get them to sin, and they’re essentially the same three lies the world uses today to entice us to sin: In regards to sin, the world tries to convince us that: 1- You need it. 2- You deserve it. 3- You’ll be in trouble without it. You need it. How easy it would have been for them to believe that “Hey, we gotta eat this stuff.” They had to eat, and forbidden food was what was on the menu. They couldn’t call the waiter and say “We were just wondering if you could talk to the cook and bring us some knishes, a stack of latkas and a nice matza ball soup.” Couldn’t do that. How very easy it would have been to just rationalize “We need this defiled food.” The world tells us we need so many things that we really don’t need. I got an ad from an electronics store congratulating me on my new $6000 line of instant credit. It said they wanted to help me get the things I need, like a plasma TV. Like a satellite dish, like surround sound in every room. Best thing about it is, I wouldn’t have to pay any interest for 18 months. It said there were two easy steps: One, fill out the form, and two, go buy the things I need. I’m sorry, but I don’t need that stuff. Going into debt for high-end entertainment gear would be a sin for me. The world tries so hard to convince me that I need that sin. Sometimes it’s a behavior, or an activity, or a even a thought pattern. Whatever it is, if it’s sin, I don’t need it. The world will tell me I do, but I don’t. There are other alternatives. The second lie that the world entices us with regarding sin is: You deserve it. These boys were being given the special treatment. They were the A-squad. Why not take advantage of it? Why not relax the dietary laws a little? Think about all that these fine Jewish lads had been through. We don’t know what happened to their families, but it’s highly likely that they all had lost parents and/or siblings to the Babylonian invasion. They had certainly lost there homes and were now in a strange place. Also remember that, prior to it’s conquest, Nebuchadnezzar had laid siege to Jerusalem. That means food had been in short supply for a very long time prior to the boy’s deportation. They had been through a lot. Maybe they deserved to indulge a little. How often does your mind go in that direction? “You work hard. You deserve a break today. You’re worth it.” Those lies are so soft and so subtle, and so convincing. In those moments, I have to ask myself “Right now I may feel like I deserve to sin. But did my Lord deserve to die? No He didn’t. But He did die, He suffered and died because of my sin. This little sin that I act like I deserve to commit, was a thorn in His brow.” Jesus didn’t deserve to die. How dare we think we deserve to do what He had to die for? It’s a lie. The third lie the world uses to entice us to sin is: You’ll be in trouble without it. Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah weren’t exactly being offered an optional meal They were being ordered to eat the food from the king’s table as part of their training regimen. They were certainly under-nourished from the recent siege on Jerusalem and Nebuchadnezzar wanted them to bulk up and look like good, strong Babylonians. If they went against his wishes, it could come back to bite them. In a similar way, sometimes patterns of sin in our lives can become so familiar and so frequent, that we develop a dependance on them. We worry about the consequences of turning from it. Like the gentleman who came to me years ago and wanted to grow in his faith and serve the Lord. He told me that his particular line of work required him to do things that were scripturally wrong. I strongly recommended that he take a step of faith and cease and desist with the carnal activity, but he tried to convince me that it had really kind of become a part of his job description, and it was necessary for him to hold onto that sinful pattern, because without it he wasn’t as marketable. Sin is so deceptive in these ways, and when we don’t stand up and call it for what it is, when we don’t exercise the boldness to break the old sinful pattern and carve a new pattern of righteousness, consequently we find ourselves enslaved to these things continually. We need to speak to one another about these things. We need to be bold in challenging one another in those areas of spiritual weakness. Hebrews 3:13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. I bet these four guys were really thankful to have each other. I bet when one was weak, the other three would lift him up and be strong on his behalf. Do you have someone strong enough in your life to challenge you to turn from your sin? Are you strong for someone else in that way? It’s a part of the Christian life that we just don’t do. I’m getting indignant about something. I’m indignant that the world and the enemy continues to be so effective in holding God’s people captive. I’m sick of seeing the body of Christ deprived of your ministry because sin has deceived you into thinking you need it, you deserve it, and you’ll be in trouble without it. I’m calling that bluff right now. You don’t need it. I don’t need it. Let’s surrender it up to God. Well, not only do the the four Jerusalem lads get a new diet imposed on them, they get mandatory new names. The name Daniel means “God is my judge.” Every time you hear the word “El” in a Hebrew name, you know it has something to do with God. His new Babylonian title, Belteshazzar, also had the name of a god in it, a false god. Belteshazzar means “prince of Bel.” Bel was a Babylonian god. In a way, I guess it was sort of a compliment. Bel was supposedly the cleverest of the Babylonian gods, and they must have perceived Daniel as a pretty bright guy to name him after Bel, the clever false deity. Great compliment. The other three boys received names that contained the names of Babylonian gods as well. Their new names that were a tribute to false gods. I wonder how they felt about answering to their Babylonian names. Inasmuch as they had to, they probably did. But they knew who they were, really. Daniel might have had to respond to the name Belteshazzar, but he knew he wasn’t a “prince of bel.” He knew who he was. He was Daniel, “God is my Judge”. When you know who you are, it doesn’t matter what others call you. Do you know who you are? In Christ, do you know who you are? What names are you responding to? I’m not necessarily talking about titles. I’m talking about who you perceive yourself to be. Because to live heroically, you have to know who you are in Christ. If you don’t take hold of who you are in Christ, if you let the world define you, you’re not going to live heroically. You’re going to live selfishly, or fearfully. You’re going to live a defeated life. Fourth grade PE class was miserable for me. You see, in fourth grade a lot of my friends started really improving at athletics. I didn’t. Whereas I had been an active, healthy second and third grader, too many potato chips and too much ice cream and not enough activity was turning me into a very pudgy fourth grader. Physical Education class started in fourth grade for us. And the PE instructor was a cocky young coach who wasn’t good with kids. I had heard how mean he was and I was scared. So on the first day of PE, he’s taking roll, and he gets to my name “Chris Merkling.” “Here.” He looks up at me, smirks, and says “Merkling, huh? Sounds like ‘weakling.’” Meaningless little comment on his part. Probably didn’t give it a second thought. But for the next three years, I would hear that line in my brain hundreds of times. When I would run out for a pass, huffing and puffing, I’d look up and see the ball coming my way, and I’d hear that voice in my mind, “Merkling, sounds like weakling,” and I’d drop the ball. Or I’d miss the lay up, or I’d strike out. That’s the name I was responding to. Today I know that that’s not my name. God calls me son. God calls me more than conqueror. So when I’m intimidated, when I’m discouraged, I have to remember Merkling doesn’t sound like weakling anymore. I don’t respond to the voices in my past that belittled me. I respond to the voice of my Father in Heaven. He calls me son. I don’t respond to the voice in my head that calls me “failure” or “worthless.” I respond to He who calls me Beloved. What names are you responding to? Whose voice are you listening to? Who are you letting define you? Is it a voice from your past saying “You can’t do anything right.” Is it a voice from the present saying the same things? Is it your own fears? Let God name and identify you. He knows you and sees you, not as you perceive yourself, but as He is recreating you. He sees you perfected. There’s a verse I love in Revelation 2. Rev. 2:17 To him who overcomes, I will give … him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it.
God has a new name picked out for you and me. I can’t wait to hear my new name. I know it’s not weakling.
So, forcibly removed from their homeland and all that they are familiar with, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah are to be trained to serve in the Babylonian royal court. They are given new names, false names, and are enticed with the temptation to break with some of their deepest held beliefs and values. And Daniel says “no.” He says “No. I will not eat the defiled food. I will not compromise the commandments of my God. I may have every worldly reason and justification to do so, it may seem like the most expedient thing to do, but my heart and my intention is to serve the Lord my God without compromise.” That’s heroic. And heroic living is victorious living. Don’t let anything keep you from that kind of living.
Kids have their pretend heroes, but big people generally have neither real nor pretend heroes. In the book The Day America Told the Truth it’s listed that 70 percent of Americans say that there’s no one they look up to as heroic. I’ll tell you, I want to be heroic to my kids because I live out a genuine faith in Christ before their eyes. I want to be heroic to them in that I’m the same person privately that I am publicly. I want to be heroic to my brothers and sisters in Christ, because I walked humbly with the Lord my God, I died to myself and lived for Christ.
The kingdom of God is calling out for heroes, ordinary people like you and me who will let God raise us above the mediocrity of sinful human nature. Men and women who don’t give way to sin when every one else finds it so easy to do so, realizing that God has equipped us with everything we need to conquer sin.
2Peter 1:3 ¶ His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
Do you believe that? It’s true. If you are in Christ, if you have been saved by His blood and filled with His Spirit, you have everything you need right now to conquer the sin that’s holding you bound. You have everything you need to be free from the fear that plagues you, the fear that’s holding you back.
You have to know that God loves you. Seek to be one whom He esteems as well. Remember the criteria for being esteemed by God? Humble yourself before Him. Be broken in His Presence and He will make you a hero in your world.</p>

Well, wouldn’t you know it—we got our hands
on a real life Xbox 360, and is there ever a lot to talk about between the killer graphics, fluid game play, and
Microsoft’s well-laid plans to take over the gaming world this fall. But we’re also well worked up over Apple’s big
announcement this week (what ever could it be?), and we’ve only got about fifteen theories as to what could be going
down. Last, but certainly not least, we’ve got a little something on the results of the DARPA Grand Challenge this
weekend—besides being impressed with the performance of all the teams involved, we were perhaps most impressed that we
didn’t even have occasion to laugh at even a little bit o’ wacky robot hijinks this year. Ah well, there’s always DGC06
for us—but for you there’s Podcast 47, check check it!

Dear TipMonkies,
I’ve been a longtime reader, and for a long time I’ve been wondering, what are the favorite RSS feeds to read over at TipMonkies headquarters? -Don
     Dear Don,
Since I generally post on the site from my balcony, I’m guessing when you refer to “headquarters”, that’s what you mean (unless you mean “the office” which is “the bathroom”). In all seriousness though, I’ve got quite a few favorites (picking a few is so hard though!) including <a href="http://www.digg.com">digg</a>, <a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com">Read/Write Web</a>, <a href="http://www.kotaku.com">Kotaku</a>, and <a href="http://www.techdirt.com">TechDirt</a>. Other favorites around the “office” include <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a>, <a href="http://www.waxy.org">Waxy</a>, <a href="http://preshrunk.info/">Preshrunk</a>, <a href="http://www.overheardintheoffice.com/">Overheard in the Office</a>, <a href="http://www.gamespy.com">GameSpy</a> and <a href="http://thesneeze.com">The Sneeze</a> (those last two are classics). Mike also likes <a href="http://modblog.bmezine.com"> BME Zine</a>.
Have a question? Don’t be shy! We’ll answer ANYTHING on this column, posted every Friday. If you have a question, feel free to <a href="http://www.tipmonkies.com/contact-us">drop us an e-mail</a>. We’ll pick one or two every week.

I RECEIVED THIS E -MAIL FROM A LISTENER WHILE PUTTING THIS SHOW TOGETHER AND WANT TO USE IT AS AN EXAMPLE OF THE TYPE OF FEEDBACK THAT I AM LOOKING FOR :<br>

"I am new to podcasting, I have for sometime been catching the engadget podcast that I happened upon and have recently found several others that I really enjoy. Including TWIT and sometimes Benjamen Walker’s Theory of Everything. Your podcast caught my eye due to the name "Free Utilities" I have found my favorite part about listening to Leo Laporte is hearing about some interesting software that is new to me. For example he mentioned GimpShop, I downloaded it and WOW !<br>

I had hoped I would get some similiar ideas from you as well. I have listened to about 3 of your podcast and although I am entertained I would like to hear about more apps and what cool features they have.<br>

I am also a new Treo user and would love to hear about some free Treo apps and how to best utilize them. Actually any Treo hacks, tricks tips etc would likely be received.<br>

Thanks and look forward to your next podcast"<br>

IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING COOL THAT CAN BE DONE WITH THE TREO THAT MIGHT NOT BE WELL KNOWN SEND ME AN E -MAIL/VOICE COMMENT AND I WILL BE TALKING ABOUT IT ON THE NEXT SHOW .
