Battle of the Buskers

It was an experiment in sound recording and also a very positive chat afterwards. The participants didn’t realise they were being recorded until later and no doubt they were well aware of each other while they were spouting forth.

On the left was Mark Campbell, he is a whistling busker from Wolverhampton. He is also blind. In the middle was Gypsy Tom, the street preacher, telling the world about God and Jesus.

Meanwhile I was sitting on the steps to the right of the photo above, in between the first two pillars. In my ears I had binaural microphones, designed to reproduce the actual sound of the world around me.

If you listen to the first part outside, wearing headphones, you should get an excellent and spooky effect. Close your eyes and you will be transported to Guildford High Street on the 6th August, 2005.

Once it has finished we talked with both participants and found out why? And for how long?

Today’s contributor, composer-with-sound Joseph Young, takes us into ‘a thunderstorm in northern Italy captured on a recent family holiday. The environment around Lake Como is surprisingly lush and green given that temperatures are regularly up in the mid 30’s [that’s upper-90’s for you ametrical Americans -Ed.] during the summer months. The greenery is comes from the heavy thunderstorms that occur on a regular (weekly?) basis. I recorded this one from the window of our flat in a small town called Lambrugo, when the storm was at its height, using Soundman OKM binaural microphones and a Sony MZ-N707 minidisc recorder.’

Er is niets zo lekker als een robbertje stoeien na het eten… ter bevordering van de spijsvertering zeg maar. Even de nieuwe binaural microphones testen op Freekje. Juteknol komt haar dochter dapper tegemoet… dat had ze beter niet kunnen doen.

Geen avondje, geen burenloeren, geen Judith in de buurt, want die loopt de deur plat bij zuslief. Dan maar bellen, want een Fluox speelt Fluox zonder Juut is niks. Een realistisch bezoek aan station deventer, opgenomen met binaural mics SP-TFB-2, parkietje kwijt en de donorregistratie. Vette podje is Augias.
