University of Hawaii physicist John Learned is suggesting it's at least possible an advanced civilization is manipulating light from certain kinds of stars known as Cepheid Variables as a way to send crude messages across the universe. Cepheids vary regularly in brightness and can be seen from as far away as 60 million light years. Learned says a well-placed shot of high energy particles - neutrinos perhaps - into a Cepheid could give the shooter control over the patterns of pulsation, and therefore the ability to craft simple coded messages.
