Ryan Ingebritsen’s composition for Flute, Percussion, and electronics utilizes MAX-MSP to alter the input from the acoustic instruments in many ways. When a piece of electronic music has live acoustics as its basis of sound manipulation rather than a tape part it is called live electronics. This piece also contains many clever and novel uses of rhythmic modulation. The percussion set up is designed to contain different instrument groups in sets of three, with the bass instrument being of a separate tone color. For instance, Ryan called for the use of three non-resonant metallic sounds: two pitched cowbells and a kitchen pot. The picture above shows my set-up for this piece, which was performed with Shannon Budd, flute on October 29, 2006 as part of the New Music Chicago’s Sonic Impact presentation at the Museum of Contemporary Art.
