“We, the people, in order to form a more perfect union…” Two hundred and twenty-one years ago, a group of men met in a hall that didn’t even have central air or a decent sound system, to launch America’s improbable experiment in democracy. Beyond their commitment to liberty, those guys knew how to write a good opening. That’s why I’ve quoted them right at the beginning. But I come before you today to talk about something else, something that gets at the very root of what it means to be an American: the right to express yourself through your consumer purchasing choices. Until now, when it came to digital cameras, many Americans have been denied that right. A monochromatic legacy of intolerance has frowned upon any digital cameras that deviated from the “correct” color palette. And we have reaped a harvest of resentment, of bitterness, of middle fingers raised and thick, dripping loogies hocked. Even as we speak, a little girl in the inner city will go to bed daring to dream of a pink digital camera. Veterans who have sacrificed everything for this country are unable to find the range of camera colors they have fought and died for. A laid-off factory worker is struggling to choose between various silver-and-black digital cameras made overseas by the same corporations that sent his job away, unable even to choose the hue of his demise. Now, we as a nation face a momentous choice. We can continue to pursue the old politics of limited camera colors. We can treat the issue as a sideshow, as fodder for the copywriters and the marketing departments. We can accept a limited view of civic engagement, confined to voting every four years for president, or, occasionally, our favorite web sites. Or we can assume our historic responsibility and offer the Kodak V1003 10MP Digital Camera in seven different colors, so that every American can choose the color of their dreams. I believe that the promise of America is about more than just 10MP resolution, 3X optical zoom, and digital image stabilization. It’s about the freedom to make superficial consumer choices in matters of little actual consequence, and to feel better about ourselves for doing it. I really wanted to work the phrase “the better angels of our nature” in here somewhere. Now I have. So whether you prefer black, white, coffee, gray, pink, silver, or blue, I ask you to join me in this historically historic moment of history, that we may all of us choose the option or opt for the choice that best suits our optional choices. In closing, I’d like to quote somebody who knew not only how to reach Americans across ethnic, racial, religious, and species lines and how to speak to their dreams and fears, but also how to deliver a good closing line: “Eee-ba-da, eee-ba-da…th-th-th-th-that’s all, folks!” Warranty: 1 Year Kodak Features: 10.0 MP for prints up to 30 × 40 in.
