That should really be written ” deployed by Intel” - because it is an adaptation of off the shelf systems and components, and with prices at $500 per end should be as important to the development of rural areas in North America as it is in the target market in developing countries. The lesson that should not be ignored is that there are 900Mhz, 2.4 and 5.8Ghz versions of the product, and the one that was used in the 100km link was at 5.8Ghz, presumably the license free portion of the band. Considering the range from microwave tower or grain elevator that might be possible, there is a tremendous opportunity to extend true Hi-speed access in a co=operative manner at very low cost. I wonder how much innovation would have been possible if there was no licensed spectrum available or if each individual base station had to be custom built, licensed and type accepted ? The technology is here, and the faster we can open up more spectrum to unlicensed operation of all sorts, the better off we will be. The innovation continues to occur at the edge of the network.
