Heading back out west for the Monterey Pop Festival in the Summer Of Love 1967, let’s have some Buffalo Springfield. The best way to have your buffalo! Monterey was full of firsts. The first multi-cultural concert, with both established and new acts. It was Jimi Hendrix’s first exposure here, and the first racially mixed, primarily white, audience for Otis Redding- who became a Pop Sensation as a result. But most importantly, all these disparate artists got to MEET each other. And they got the feeling that something big was about to happen to popular music. The times they were a-changin’! Funny, but I always thought the 1st version of the classic Hey Joe was done by the Leaves (I said SEEDS in the show- sorry!). Followed closely by the great band, Love. It has come to my attention that the Byrds introduced that song to the world. So we’ll hear that, and another one about President Kennedy preceeded and followed by a self-indulgent rant from, I think, Roger McGuinn on the JFK assassination. It’s ok Roger, I still think the world of you! We’ll hear Country Joe & The Fished stoned- at least I hope they are stoned- nobody could be that bad clear-headed, lol! Back to Hendrix for his literally fiery version of Wild Thing- and it has always brought a smile to my face when about halfway through, he references Frank Sinatra’s Strangers In The Night. Listen for it. For the record, Monterey was the first Rock & Roll Benefit Concert. And it was the first huge, outdoor concert with a new, innovative sound system.
