Drum set deconstruction

During this set, beardtongue broke his bass drum pedal, lost 5 sticks, lost the hi-hat clutch while the stand rotated out of range, and knocked the snare drum off its stand by the time the performance was over. I hate to be that tommy aldridge kind of drummer who finishes off a solo by knocking everything over, but if there is one night in my life, and if ever a drumset wanted to be kicked around, it was my drumset last friday night. You can hear it a little bit.

2007-08-23 3P1 L3P T1C F1T: Jijimuge, aaron zarzutzki and beardtongue: and finally kristin calvarese in the gazebo of the downtown park in sleepy Venice Florida at bedtime. (sunset) Special attention must be paid to the walk-in, a beach guy with a pair of scissors tucked into his belt, who bore no qualms expressing his satisfaction with the music. 2- jijimuge, aaron, beardtongue: guitar w/ electronics, electronic-actuated percussion, and the kagel drum. Here the music was greatly assisted by the insects, (or was that aaron?) and the beach guy felt our music needed a little crooning on top.

The guitar-drums duo of Ingram and Manchester marks a decided endeavor to explore musical understatement, a project that, by considering its relationsship with “silence,” respects some of the more restrained acoustic qualities of its instrumentation. The resulting compositional vehicles therefore take on a kind of “slow motion sleight of hand,” in which exposition and obfuscation are readily available elements to be shuffled. This invitation into process, however, is rendered more enticing by means of the duo’s contant exploration of fresh, cinematic coloration. -Cliff Ingram

Over the next three installments, I will be posting recordings of three compositions by Chicago Guitarist Bill Mackay performed by his group Darts and Arrows. Other musicians are Dominic Johnson on violin, Lili Wosko on cello, Kyle Hernandez on bass, and Joshua Manchester on drums. Bill describes these pieces as chamber folk, experimental psych-folk, or even “Edgar Allen Poe” folk, if that gives you any clues to his intent. Please also reference the Darts and Arrows set which precedes this one, because with a slightly different personnel and no programming, a vastly different tenor was struck.

Josh Manchester Radio Performance

The Vagaries of Music Education. A live improvisation in tandem with a four-part recorded composition. The concept for this piece occurred when I came across some rehearsal tapes from my school years of playing a banal rhythm at different tempos on a practice pad. I instantly remembered the late-night session in the institutional white room in the basement of my university. When I heard the track, I felt nothing but frustration that by the time I graduated, I had put myself under immense pressure to emulate an absent abstraction, yet knew nothing about how to express my own tastes. In this brief four-part composition I attempt to weave something of interest from these mindless exercises, manipulating this rhythm into clusters evocative of chaotic systems. In the live performance, a free improvisation was played over the recorded composition. Performed live on Philip Von Zweck’s radio show, “Something Else” November 6th 2005, 10th anniversary episode.

Guitarist Mitra of Sir Edmund Hillary and the Sherpas improvises with Joshua Manchester, the band’s drummer. This recording took place on February 22, 2006. Neither musician feels compelled to restrain themselves to a tempo usually, but in this recording a number of grooves develop. In this rock-based experiment, new ideas lead to various places, or slowly transmute over the course of mistakes and shifting avoidances.

Part Of You Pours Out Of Me In These Lines by Ryan Ingebritsen. Performed by Joshua Manchester, Percussion and Shannon Budd, Flute.

Ryan Ingebritsen’s composition for Flute, Percussion, and electronics utilizes MAX-MSP to alter the input from the acoustic instruments in many ways. When a piece of electronic music has live acoustics as its basis of sound manipulation rather than a tape part it is called live electronics. This piece also contains many clever and novel uses of rhythmic modulation. The percussion set up is designed to contain different instrument groups in sets of three, with the bass instrument being of a separate tone color. For instance, Ryan called for the use of three non-resonant metallic sounds: two pitched cowbells and a kitchen pot. The picture above shows my set-up for this piece, which was performed with Shannon Budd, flute on October 29, 2006 as part of the New Music Chicago’s Sonic Impact presentation at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

As part of the Chicago Calling Festival, I was fortunate enough to perform a concert with Chicago’s legendary patriarch of modern jazz, Fred Anderson, Liquid Soul and Psychedelic Furs reedist Mars Williams, the incomparable Jim Baker, and the amazing bass player Josh Abrams. The concert was intended to be an internet2 facilitated collaboration between artists and musicians of University of California San Diego; Stanford University; and University of Alaska at Fairbanks. However, technical difficulties arose and the only external input that Chicago musicians received were some loud feedback hums and squeals. Our show took place at Loyola University’s Quinlan Hall, with invaluable assistance from Laptop musician and tech guru Chris Sorg.

"Still" by William Jason Raynovich for Solo Marimba. Performed by Joshua Manchester

I performed this piece on October 13 2006 for the Electronic Music Midwest Festival at Lewis University. This piece ended up on a symposium of electronic music not by including electronics but by being composed by a computer. Jason Raynovich, using software developed by Alex Lazarevich, manipulated motives with the same invention as composers have for centuries, with the difference that these motives were manipulated in three dimensions. This manifests itself in the music as rhythmic diminution and augmentation; extreme interval swings, changes of color with both mallet choice and changing placement of the strike on the bar, and dead strokes.

This is actually an air horn imitation I bought from walgreens. The user blows into a pipe which splits in two parts, each of which actuate a rubber skin stretched over a plastic tube. The two tubes are set an attention-getting dissonant interval apart. I’m not sure I ever play it normally during this piece though.

My friend Jon Vanderbrug and I stood on this bridge watching massive cranes load coal on one side of the river and huge dump trucks move loads of rock on the other. In the distance was an imposing railroad elevating bridge and the commuter-packed skyway. Suddenly behind us a bell began to ring and our bridge began to open to allow passage of a coal barge, driving the seagulls wild and sending us running for the bank.

Daniel Godston, Jayve Montgomery, Bill Mackay, and Josh Manchester play live at the Vittum Theater; Around The Coyote Arts Festival 2006-09-10

The beautiful and great-sounding Vittum Theater played host to Dan, Bill, Jayve and I as part of the Around The Coyote Arts Festival in Chicago’s Wicker Park. Ellyzabeth Adler danced for the middle section. If you listen closely at the beginning, a superball flew loose of its handle and bounced across stage striking the guitarist Bill. As we looked at each other frozen with consternation, Dan produced a Chinese massage ball without missing a beat and sent it jangling across stage at me. When Ellyzabeth made her entrance, she incorporated the balls into her dancing as well.

Here is the concluding music to my foray into Texas. Joey Carter starts it off with an infectious dialogue on the vibes which never quite repeats itself. This music is from a session I played with some fine musicians on tour in Ft. Worth. At Sardines, where they play live jazz 7 nights a week, I got together with Jhon Khasen (piano), Daniel Stone (bass), Chris White (bass/flute/trumpet), Leonard Belota (trumpet), and Joey Carter (vibes). I recorded this on a minidisk player next to the drumkit, so apologies for the heavy drums in the mix. Blogger Stashdauber Ken writes: johnny case, joshua manchester: most exciting music Ive heard so far this yr: an evening of free improv put together by pianist-composer-activist johnny case at sardines, of all places, featuring drummer joshua manchester. also on the set: leonard belota (trumpet), joey carter (vibes), daniel stone (bass), and mvp chris white (trumpet, flute, bass). johnny pulled it together on the quick when manchester called from h...

(when not playing, leonard had his eyes closed a lot of the time; id like to have seen the movies that this music was making inside his head.) joshua, can play total sprung riddim a la sunny murray or his homeski famoudou don moye; there were times when the only repeating figures onstage came from joey on vibes or young bassist stone. chris white opened one piece with a virtuosic turn on flute, which manchester, stone, and case built to an intensity. then white moved to bass, playing a legato line with lotsa intervallic leaps and the music spiralled to an even higher level. carter kicked one off with his usual deft four-mallet work, and case, white, and manchester rode it out till they had nothing left to add. there are moments when this music flows like a mountain stream; at others, it surges like an erupting volcano. at all times, its like looking at the world with new eyes. be nice if sardines could do this kinda thang on a regular basis. while not jam-packed, there were a good number of music appreciators in the house. if you werent there, you missed it, kid. Check out Kens blog at http://stashdauber.blogspot.com/ This is the 5th track of a set which lasted nearly two hours, and Ill be posting all the compositions here over a seven week period. My deepest heartfelt appreciation to Johnny Case for making this happen. Thanks! Josh More info: www.joshuamanchester.com</itunes:subtitle>

Blogger Stashdauber Ken writes: johnny case, joshua manchester: most exciting music Ive heard so far this yr: an evening of free improv put together by pianist-composer-activist johnny case at sardines, of all places, featuring drummer joshua manchester. also on the set: leonard belota (trumpet), joey carter (vibes), daniel stone (bass), and mvp chris white (trumpet, flute, bass). johnny pulled it together on the quick when manchester called from his sweet home chicago to try and hustle a gig while accompanying his wife on a biz trip. tuesdays usually a dead night at the restaurant, and these cats dream about making music totally extempore, without the constraints of heads, chord changes, expectations, fans. the vibe was redolent of classic dates like dolphys out to lunch or cecil taylors unit structures. from moment to moment, a different man might be the leader, with the others listening and responding empathetically. when we got there, johnny was hammering out tone clusters a la cecil (i finally figured out who he reminds me of: jaki byard, a cat steeped in tradition who can also go outÂ?). this led to a dialogue between belota on ruminative harmon mute and chris white playing smears and flurries of notes on open horn. Thanks! Josh</itunes:subtitle>

(when not playing, leonard had his eyes closed a lot of the time; i’d like to have seen the movies that this music was making inside his head.) joshua, who plays regularly at an open jam sponsored by the aacm (still active ‘n’ vital after all these yrs), can play total sprung riddim a la sunny murray or his homeski famoudou don moye; there were times when the only repeating figures onstage came from joey on vibes or young bassist stone. chris white opened one piece with a virtuosic turn on flute, which manchester, stone, and case built to an intensity. then white moved to bass, playing a legato line with lotsa intervallic leaps that reminded me a bit of one local muso’s comment that “chris’ bass playing is a lot like his flute playing,” and the music spiralled to an even higher level. carter kicked one off with his usual deft four-mallet work, and case, white, and manchester rode it out till they had nothing left to add. there are moments when this music flows like a mountain stream; at others, it surges like an erupting volcano. at all times, it’s like looking at the world with new eyes. be nice if sardines could do this kinda thang on a reg’lar basis. while not jam-packed, there were a good number of music appreciators in the house; some of ‘em even ate food. if you weren’t there, you missed it, kid.” Check out Ken’s blog at http://stashdauber.blogspot.com/ This is the warm-up track of a set which lasted nearly two hours, and I’ll be posting the next six compositions here in weeks to come. My deepest heartfelt appreciation to Johnny Case for making this happen. Thanks! Josh</itunes:subtitle>

Joshua Manchester - wind rattles my front door

When I was young, my mother melted her kitchen timer on the oven. The suddenly sad looking ticker became useless and i adopted it, because of a deep seeded yet unrecognized fascination with its new quality; random unpredictability. I would set the timer over and over again, each time listening when the small bell inside would sound, now pathetically muted by melted plastic into muffled stutters of metallic origin. It never once rang the same way, and the realization that an event could be repeated exactly yet produce unique results each time was attractive to me and became ingrained into my aesthetic. Luckily, I grew up in the century in which composers create situations similar to my little kitchen timer all of the time. In this track, our front door rattles in its frame every time a gust of wind blows by. If you listen to the groupings, pace, and nuance of variation that wind can produce from this seemingly static situation, hopefully you can understand why I find it so appealing.

Cafe Mestizo in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood features an open jam every Sunday. I played drumset with Jayve Montgomery on tenor sax. Jayve is the excellent musician from the Ways and Means trio and Sacred Round. I thought it was a great time, and we responded to each other’s ideas really well.

Caligramme by Daniel Godston

Caligramme is a piece consisting of two melodies that interplay in a variety of ways. Dan performs the trumpet, while Bill MacKay provides the counter melody on guitar. Dan’s composition is more of a framework on which to hang improvisation however. A large majority of this track is spontaneous and depends on the interaction of the three performers. This music was chosen for the podcast this week because this trio will be performing on Wednesday, July 19th at 11:00 AM. (Today) You can catch it in the Chicago area at 89.3 WNUR FM, or streaming on the internet through http://www.wnur.org/ with Real or Windows Media Player.

Composed entirely of the sounds of an antique and misused record. This piece is an examination of the hiss underlying albums and a kind of exploration into why it is such a comforting sound to so many people. At different speeds and in different contexts, these background noises, which normally go unheard because of their ubiquity in the recording, take prominence in ‘Character’. As the tessitura and tempo of the music slow down, it is hoped that the listener will find something comforting in the humming narcosis- a retreat to the origin we all share.
