This week continues our busy month of May with a visit with The Great Hookup, a band that first came to my attention when they opened up for ESW at Birdy's some months ago, and later when singer/guitarist Rory Connolly began hosting the Monday night open mic at my favorite watering hole, and thus destroying what was a fine tradition the guys and I had of being the only customers in the bar on Monday nights.

We caught up with the band at Spin Nightclub in Broad Ripple on the evening of a rather large party celebrating the release of their debut CD, In the Realm Of. While Spin is a fine club with some great acts on the bill, maybe I just vist on the wrong nights (or I'm chasing the wrong bands), because I can honestly say that I haven't seen 6308 Guilford Avenue that hoppin' since the days of "The Patio."

... insert silent moment for The Patio here ...

The Great Hookup is a laid-back rock/reggae/blues/jam band playing a wide range of material that, thanks to two very distict songwriters and vocalists (Andy Baker and Rory Connolly), never gets old or falls into any kind of repetitive ruts. The sound is rounded out by an incredible rhythm section (Brad Edwards on bass; Kris Edwards on Drums) and colored with some great audio textures courtesy of a keyboardist (Russ Cameron) who knows how to fill in the proverbial cracks in the music, as well as pump out a great solo when it's called for. In short, these are five well-tuned and tight-playing musicians that work extremely well together -- and judging by their following that night, you probably didn't need me just now, pointing out something that you already knew.

Links referenced in the show:

    * The Great Hookup can be found here: MySpace | Web Site | Facebook | Sonic Bids | Twitter.
    * The new album, In the Realm Of, is not yet available online. When it is, we will link to it here. In the meantime, you can pick it up at one of their live shows.
    * The CD was recorded at the Pop Machine in Broad Ripple, produced by Adam White of ESW (whom many of you will remember from Show #009), and mastered by Andy VanDette.
    * For those of you who were having trouble picturing what a melodica is, here is a picture of Russ playing one.
    * Anyone interested in "playing keyboards for little pay or notoriety" (his words, not mine) is asked to contact Jeff Byrd and the Wingmen -- and tell Jeff he needs to be on this show while you're at it. Otherwise, I may be forced to dust off my Yamaha and audition ... and believe me, nobody wants to hear that.
    * When looking for inspiration (or a fight) on a moonlight night in Broad Ripple, consider La Bamba's: Burritos as Big as Your Head.
    * Singer/Guitarist Rory Connolly also performs as a solo act around town, courtesy of Jagermeister Music. You can often catch him at Claude and Annie's in Fishers (aka: "Podcast Studio C"), where he hosts their Monday open mic -- though he rarely brings the Jagerettes to those shows.
    * Rory can also be seen playing in a duo with singer/guitarist Kelley Isenhower.
    * Drummer Kris Edwards can be seen with the Steve Trio every Friday and Saturday evening this summer from 5:00 to 7:00 on the patio at the Jazz Kitchen.
    * The Great Hookup has generously donated a copy of their brand new CD, In the Realm Of, to be given away to one luckly listener. You can enter to win it on our contests page. The winner will be picked on June 7. </itunes:subtitle>

A friend and I were discussing what we liked about the new bands we're listening to these days. It would seem this changes every couple of years for us. Certainly musicianship is important, as is stage presence, and maybe even a bit of an "attitude." This week's guests, Finer, have all of those things. However, the thing that really draws me to their music is what, for lack of a better word, we called "quirkiness" during the interview. It's not that the music is weird or inaccessible by any means (quite the contrary), but more that their songs not only meld multiple, familiar styles and elements, but also that they turn them, not quite on their head, but at least a little off-the straight-and-narrow to give them a unique, fresh feel.

Beyond the music, Finer, represented in this interview by husband and wife team Stacy Basner and Ethan James, have some interesting stories about nursing a car through life in the fast lane, living in LA, and more than a few observations about t...

Beyond the music, Finer, represented in this interview by husband and wife team Stacy Basner and Ethan James, have some interesting stories about nursing a car through life in the fast lane, living in LA, and more than a few observations about the Midwest music scene, all of which are surprisingly optimistic and upbeat -- another quirky approach for local musicians.

Finally, for those of you keeping score, it was not evasion, but purely coincidental that I neglected to ask my standard question: What is the song "Thorn in My Side" about? This will no doubt prove to be the omission of the year. Sorry, I guess you guys will just have to whip out your subtext dictionaries and work on that one as your homework assignment.

This is another one of those shows that has been in the works for what seems like an eternity. I've been friends Scooter Hanes for a few years now, but it has taken all that time for the stars to align such that the timing is right to have him on the show. Fortunately, with his demo completed and work begun a full-length CD, this has become the opportune time to give him a little promotion.

Scooter has made a name for himself on the east coast with various musical projects and a CD with his former musical partner Paul "Pabo" Dake released through Zigmo Records -- good luck finding a copy. Here in Indiana he has been very successful playing such venues as the Whammy Bar, the Rathskellar, and recurring gigs at a couple of notable chain restaurants here in town. Contrary to rumor, he is not the guy in the freecreditreport.com commercials.

Contrary to rumor, he is not the guy in the freecreditreport.com commercials.

Recently, however, he has put his efforts into his own music as the primary singer/songwriter/guitarist in the Scooter Hanes Band, and inexplicably, is actively looking to trade steady, high-paying, corporate gigs for the smaller audiences of the less-stable, less-appreciated, all-original music scene. For that, we salute and support him.

Links referenced in the show:

    * Scooter Hanes can be found here: MySpace | Web Site.
    * He has graciously shared tracks from his recently-completed demo with us today. His first solo CD is in the works, and we will have a link here when it becomes available.
    * Random non-sequitor trivia: New Castle, Indiana does indeed host the world's largest high school fieldhouse.
    * In case you hadn't heard: Yes, the Music Mill is back.
    * Scooter plays, and wholeheartedly endorses Taylor Guitars.
    * Scooter is currently a staple performer at Jimmy Buffet's Cheeseburger in Paradise and occasionally Champps Americana.
    * The fourth track played, Under the Mistletoe, features Lani Williams, who currently performs as a duo with Joe Hart. You can check out their stuff here: Myspace.</itunes:subtitle>

This week's show marks a new tact in creating podcasts for me ... and you know I love to change things up. When Ben Bledsoe (ex Memory Thief) contacted me and offered to meet me up at "Studio C" for an interview, I took a quick listen to his stuff, decided he knew what he was doing and wasn't just some crank, then immediately took him up on his offer. As such, this show is about as off-the-cuff and live as you can get. In fact, you will hear that I am listening to the tracks for the first time as the show is being recorded. This method is a bit more nerve-wracking going in, but on the other hand, editing afterwards is extremely easy -- and I hate the editing process, as you probably know.

Ben Bledsoe is a prolific songwriter who joins a list of distinguished front men who are attempting to break from the "rock band format" and break into a new, somewhat softer, format that showcases lyrics and songwriting of a small trio over the flash and brute force of a larger group. With the strength and diversity he shows in the four tracks he's shared on this episode, we have no doubt he'll quickly find success and a following for his music.

    * The Night Owls are so new that they do not yet have a MySpace page or web site.
    * Ben's previous band, Memory Thief, can be found here: MySpace | Web Site.
    * The tracks heard this show were recorded at Alex Kercheval's Scientia Studios in Noblesville.
    * Jim Kinckaid (Sons of Fire, ex Wisebloods) also joins us briefly. You can hear his music on his own MySpace page.
    * Currently, the Night Owls' only gig is June 2 at Barley Island in Noblesville, at which their first CD, and T-Shirts, will be made available.
    * To book the Night Owls, you may call manager Heather Bauer at 317-850-0660.
    * Alex Kercheval (ex Memory Thief) recently finished work on a movie called Something Missie in the Life of Jordan Bank.

You know, you spend 20+ years in the music scene, you think you know how it is and what's going on, then some 20-something-year-old upstart kids essentially call you an old fart and show you an entire subculture that you were barely aware even existed.

Somehow, I always knew I'd be the old fart one day. Thanks for the education guys!

Kurt Rambis is one of the leading bands in Indy's basement/underground/DIY scene, which combines the grass-roots work ethic of the Indie scene, combined with the angst and wit of the 70's punk scene, and packages it up with energetic, passion-filled, original music. It's not for everybody, but I'm increasingly convinced that everybody should sample it at least once before they pass judgment on it. * They regularly practice at The 1511, a house/show spot located in the southern Broad Ripple area.
    * They are named for, but should not be confused with, the 4-time world champion basketball palyer and coach.
    * The EP, available on their MySpace page was recorded at Ruckus Recording Studio.
    * Their next project will most-likely be a split 7" vinyl release with Sex Before Marriage. Followed by a proper EP.

I'm constantly amazed by how everybody has a different perspective on the Indianapolis music scene. Some people say it's great and thriving, some people are frustrated that it seems dominated by some style of music other than their own, some people deny there is a scene at all. Then there are some, like Whoa!tiger, that don't seem concerned at all, as long as they can get out and pack a room with their friends and family and play their music.

As long-time veterans of both the cover band and original music circuit, these guys have just produced their first CD, which is completely their own music, yet pays homage to a lot of great rock and roll that has influenced them over the years.

    * They recently appeared in Wayne Bertsch 's "Barfly Comic Strip" ... which is one of the best parts of Nuvo Magazine each week.
    * A few visual references (kindly provided by the band)
o Next time you see Dan Janke, be sure and comment on his really cool tattoo, which features Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Johnny Cash, and Harry Potter.
o The T-Shirt we alluded to, but edited around because it turns out visuals don't work in an audio format, can be seen here: Front / Back.
o Another tidbit that wasn't actually captured in the interview, is Whoa Tiger's band motto: "Arrange Around the Suck" ... which should apply to everyone's every-day life.
    * Local musicians are hereby encouraged to submit their music for WTTS' new show, Indy Underground, hosted by Laura Duncan. All others are duly instructed to tune in each Monday night at 10:00 PM and support all mainstream media efforts to expose and promote local music ... dammit!

One of the cool things about doing this show is going out to cool remote locations, enduring the bewildered stares and questions of people who are not yet podcast-savvy, and annoying the audiophiles and broadcasting professionals who think I should be locked in a booth somewhere with sound-cushioning foam on the walls and speaking in deep, over-enunciated tones. For those of you "get" the idea of organic media -- and who keep track of the background ambiance for each show, or occasionally come out to watch a recording session -- the echoes, slamming doors, and clanking dishes this week are courtesy of the Fountain Diner on the outskirts of downtown, where I haven't recorded since meeting Gentleman Caller there almost three years ago. The only difference is, this time instead of space-cadet headsets, I've got nice, big microphones on big black stands. I'm not sure which is stranger-looking, but the microphones do a much better job of picking up the background.

Someday, I'll be brave enough to try to record in the bowling alley.

This week's guest, Shelby Kelly, is a very talented singer/songwriter who first cut his teeth in the alternative/underground rock band Creepin' Charley and the Boneyard Orchestra, a long-time staple at the Melody Inn, Radio Radio, and most of the popular clubs in the city. His first solo project, Alone, is about as far from that particular brand of music as you can get. The eight track CD showcases Shelby's talents as a lyricist and singer who is full of passion, wit, and charm. Not quite folk, not quite rock and roll -- but accessible to both audiences -- these songs will appeal to any fan of good music, solid vocals, and poetic lyrics.

Links referenced in the show:

    * Shelby Kelley can be found here: MySpace.
    * Check out his "band," Creepin' Charlie, here: Myspace / Web Site.
    * In addition to his music, Shelby is also a talented artist. Check out samples of his art work here: MySpace, or on the cover of Otis Gibbs' latest CD.
    * His first CD, Alone, is available at his shows. You can catch him soon at the Indianapolis Songwriters Cafe (who can be heard on Show #032), or at Birdy's Live with Mandy Marie on April 28th opening for the Dexter Romweber Duo (a great band out of North Carolina whose name we butchered during the show).
    * If you are an out-of-towner, you can purchase the CD by emailing "shelbykelleymusic at gmail dot com"
    * At one point, I made a comparison between Shelby and punk poet Patrik Fitzgerald -- more in tone, style, and perception than any actual musical similarity, I suppose. There was some interest in learning more about Patrik, who is stall an active musician. Some of his work can be found here: MySpace / Web Site / Unknown Soldier Biog.
    * During the interview, we get thrown off when Ryan "Sweaty B" Williams walks by the window next to us. Ryan hosts the Indianapolismusic.net Podcast which has a slightly larger circulation and much slicker production values than this show.
    * Registered members of Indy In-Tune are eligible to enter and win a copy of "Alone," graciously donated by Shelby Kelley.

This is the fourth of seven shows recorded on September 15th at the Kammy's Kause benefit and features the Louisville, KY Digby -- no thanks to Audacity who seemed to enjoy itself eating my edits and choking on the completed file ... twice.
As I stated in the show, this has to go down in my top three favorite shows, if nothing else, for the tangents. Where else do you get an interesting discussion of the benefits of multiple EP releases versus a single full-length CD relese, 1970's portable audio equipment, baseball hall-of-famers, hotel porn, and a geography lesson all in one show anyway?

Show #033: Jeff DeHerdt

While I've probably listened to a couple hundred local acts in the past three years, and I always make a concerted effort to research every artist and band that I put on the show, there are only a few local artists whose music I am as intimately familiar with as I am Jeff DeHerdt's. Therefore, when our Friday night plans to catch a show in Broad Ripple got unexpectedly nixed, it was a no-brainer on how to spend our time instead: Pop downstairs to "Studio B" and record a long-overdue podcast featuring the best of his solo material.

Jeff was actually one of the first guests on the show with a different band, CA3 -- originally a long, schizophrenic interview filled with all kinds of "music geek" goodness that I had to edit down to 40 or so minutes. This should have been my first warning. This should have been my first warning. This time, throwing in three hours of chatting about everything from movies, British scifi, computers, and comic books before we actually got around to hitting the record button at 11:30 at night, means that I once again ended up with over two hours of raw material and had to spend an entire day cutting out some great, yet completely-unrelated, topics of conversation to get everything to a manageable length. As such, this show is a lot less formal and much more candid/conversational than what you normally hear around here, though some of the drastic shifts in topic are more the result of my editing than they are any sort of personality disorder or psychic link on the part of Jeff or myself. Frankly, I prefer this more-organic format, and hopefully, you will enjoy it as well.

    * Jeff DeHerdt can be found here: MySpace | Web Site | (Neglected) Blog
    * Both his CD's, Club Bordeaux and The Autumn House are available at CD Baby.
    * His first appearance on Indy In-Tune was with his experimental electronic band CA3 back on Show #005.
    * We both struggled during the interview to remember what accolade "I'm All the Friends That I've Got" won. After a bit of research, we found that not only was it nominated for best song and best album in the 2006 Just Plain Folks music awards, but also got nineteen separate awards on Garageband.com.
    * The fourth segment of the show largely references a survey we and many of our friends took, originally on Facebook, where we listed our fifteen most-influential albums (not necessarily the best albums, but the ones that shaped our musical tastes and had the biggest influence on us). That survey is now replicated in the members area of indyintune.com, for your enjoyment.
    * This week's promo is for The Chillcast, which features a great mix of podsafe jazz, world music, electronica, and soul. </itunes:subtitle>

This week's show is one that I've been looking forward to doing for almost a year now, ever since I was first introduced to the Indianapolis Songwriter's Cafe and the music of Cliff Snyder. This week, rather than playing their own music and talking about their approach to the creative process, Cliff and Cara Jean Wahlers discuss their efforts to promote songwriter and roots-based music in the Indianapolis market as well as the challenges that face musicians who play the type of music whose audience is not the normal bar-hopping party crowd that frequents the clubs and other live-music venues. They also talk about the history and future of the Indianapolis Songwriters Cafe, the Big Roots Show, and the other special one-off shows they feature throughout the year.

In addition to a thoughtful and informative interview, Cliff and Cara Jean bring along five tracks from five different artists, all of whom feature prominently in the shows they manage and promote.

One of the cool things about doing this show is when you find a band who plays music that's different from everything you've featured before. Another cool thing is when you find a band who is energetic, upbeat, and genuinely excited about making that music.

Upshot is both of those things.

Despite having fought some pretty tough battles with both the west coast and Cincinnatti music scenes; despite personnel problems; despite geographical difficulties; and despite the usual struggles of eking out a living as musicians, this band has a great rapport, enthusiasm for what they do, a lot fun doing it, and the music that matches perfectly with the vibe they project.

Apologies for some rough audio on this one, it was recorded in a crowded downtown coffee shop, sitting right next to a bunch of electrical equipment that made the mics buzz. I filtered and buried what I could, but you people who seem to focus more on audio quality than show content may get a bit distracted. As for ...

This week marks the first new show for a while, and hopefully a return from our self-imposed hiatus to producing new shows on a semi-regular basis (at least that's my New Years' resolution this year). What can I say? It's been a crazy last twelve months -- but in a really good way this time, at least.

Jenn Cristy has now become our first repeat guest, which is just fine by me, since her previous appearance was one of the best-received shows we've done, and one of my favorite interviews to date -- although, I think this one is even better. Jenn comes to us this time with a freshly-inked international distribution deal with one of those big record company things we like to make fun of, along with four brand new songs which she has graciously allowed us to play for all of you. This does not, however, excuse you from going out and buying all four of them separately at one of the locations listed below.
Show #028: DoVinci

After a marathon seven shows recorded in one day in the chilly outdoors at Kammy's Kause (not that I didn't thoroughly enjoy myself) talking to what was largely a collection of jam bands, we're going to change things up this week. The thing I found particularly fun about this show is that, not only is it a new location and new genre of music we've not yet featured on the show, but also a genre that, by my own admission, I really don't know much about, so the experience proved to be an educational one for me.

Donnell and Vincent are immigrants to the Indianapolis scene, hailing from Detroit and Chicago respectively, and bring a unique approach to combining their hip hop roots with the more soulful, R&B vocal tones that are their passion. <itunes:subtitle>After a marathon seven shows recorded in one day in the chilly outdoors at Kammy's Kause (not that I didn't thoroughly enjoy myself) talking to what was largely a collection of jam bands, we're going to change things up this week.

In doing so they have created some fantastic, accessible music, but at the same time alienated themselves and caused some controvercy among the purists in their circles. Joining them on this interview is Perry Stevens, owner and chief engineer at Snapjoint Studios, who is producing and managing the band as the make their ascent to greater things.

In keeping with the free-form spirit of the interview, I've done very few edits this week, keeping a lot of the tangents, outtakes, and jokes that fell flat. As such, this show carries and "explicit" tag and may contain humor that some of you will find offensive; others will find hilarious. What can I say? There were a few beers consumed before and during the recording.
Links referenced in the show:

    * Dovinci can be found here: MySpace.
    * Vince can be found here: Myspace / Web Site.
    * Donnell can be found here: MySpace.
    * Perry Stevens and Snapjoint studios can be found here: MySpace / Web Site.
    * When released, their debut CD will be available at both Indy CD and Vinyl as well as Luna Music. Two of my favorite places to go shopping.
    * In the background, you will also hear our unofficial back-line promotions team, which consists of Johnny Lyles of Lonewolf Media Entertainment: MySpace / Web Site ...
    * ... as well as our unofficial paparazzi / entourage / security team, Nick T. Photography: MySpace / Web Site.
