Cung Le Interview

You’ll have to forgive Cung Le if he sounds a little tired during our interview. It’s tough being the new king of San Jose especially after earning that moniker following a grueling three round war against the likes of Frank Shamrock. Le impressed the entire MMA world this past Saturday night when he dominated Shamrock for fifteen minutes and eventually captured the Strikeforce middleweight crown after Shamrock broke his right forearm and was unable to continue fighting. I had the pleasure of speaking to Le just days after the victory and among the topics we spoke about included: Has the reality of beating Frank Shamrock finally sunk in? Did he expect the fight to unfold as it did His thoughts on Frank Shamrock’s trash-talking tactics before and during the fight His game plan going into the bout Whether he knew he had broken Shamrock’s arm His thoughts on the end of the third round When he would like to fight next His current contract situation with Strikeforce

Never heard of Mike Budnik? Well, obviously you aren’t a fan of inline skating and don’t have an eye for up-and-coming MMA talent. The former pro skater and X games veteran recently made the jump to MMA and, boy, was that a good decision as he is currently 6-0 and on the verge of debuting for a major promotion. If you’re curious to know where he will be fighting next just check out our exclusive interview with him. Some of the topics we discussed were: Why he chose to make the switch to MMA Comparing inline skating to MMA How nervous he was during his first fight Starting over in a new sport His amazing knockout of Kenny Giddens Fighting on a live HDNet Fights telecast Which MAJOR promotion has he just signed with Which fighter he would like to face next

Pollock's POV: Down With The Score & Down With PVRs

Another week, another pissed off John Pollock. And, once again, he has every right to be. Much like most 18-to 34-year-old males (including myself), John wasn’t home to catch the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony on Saturday night. He relied on his trusty PVR to tape the show but, just like I did, he missed out on the telecast due to the UNC-Louisville NCAA tournament game running a little long. That coupled with The Score’s (the network that televises all WWE programming in Canada) head-scratching decision to air a repeat episode of Smackdown following the game AND THEN the HOF Ceremony made for a lot of angry Canadian wrestling fans come Sunday morning. Once again, I was reminded why I love American cable that much more than Canadian (I am currently in Montreal so I couldn’t watch it on the USA Network). Anyhow, take a listen as John recounts his pain-staking attempt to watch quality wrestling programming.

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson is probably being pulled in 800 different directions nowadays. He is arguably the most marketable MMA fighter around and he is also about to star on the seventh season of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV (season premiere is on 4/2). Nevertheless, he was kind enough to take a couple minutes out of his busy press tour this afternoon to talk to Jarry Park. I was hoping to get the happy-go-lucky Rampage but instead I got the to-the-point Rampage. Some of the topics we discussed included: Why he agreed to do the show His upcoming bout against Forrest Griffin Whether Chuck Liddell deserves a third crack at him John Cena stealing his chain gimmick And these are some of the topics he didn’t want to talk about: The Nike commercial he is rumored to be starring in Whether or not his trainer Juanito Ibarra would appear on TUF 7 Any TUF 7 specifics Elliott Spitzer’s love life Oh well, worth a shot…

Nevertheless, he was kind enough to take a couple minutes out of his busy press tour this afternoon to talk to Jarry Park. I was hoping to get the happy-go-lucky Rampage but instead I got the to-the-point Rampage. Some of the topics we discussed included: Why he agreed to do the show His upcoming bout against Forrest Griffin Whether Chuck Liddell deserves a third crack at him John Cena stealing his chain gimmick And these are some of the topics he didn’t want to talk about: The Nike commercial he is rumored to be starring in Whether or not his trainer Juanito Ibarra would appear on TUF 7 Any TUF 7 specifics Elliott Spitzer’s love life Oh well, worth a shot…</itunes:subtitle>

Want to hear a fired up John Pollock? Just ask him about Ric Flair’s retirement. You can’t really blame The Prodigy since it’s safe to say that regardless of whether Flair and HBK tear down the Citrus Bowl this Sunday this angle has been a major disappointment for all residents of Flair Country. That is considering this will in fact be Flair’s final match. I am actually surprised as to how many people believe this will be it for The Nature Boy. I fully expect to see Flair back in some ring within 12-14 months but I guess that is a different story for a different day. If you’ve been out of the loop and didn’t even know that Flair was on the verge of retirement I will let John explain why what could have been one of the most memorable storylines in WWF/E history turned out to be, well, simply ordinary.

Been out of the boxing loop lately? Don’t fear because Large and I seemingly covered it all this week. First, we talked a little Mayweather-WWE. Large watched this week’s episode of RAW so I was curious as to what he thought about the product considering this was the first time he watched wrestling in something like ten years. We then transitioned into Pacquiao-Marquez II and whether they should fight for a third time. Large brought up some minor controversy brewing following the affair as well. Later, we spoke about David Haye’s entrance into the Heavyweight division, Andy Lee on Friday Night Fights, Ricky Hatton’s future, Casamayor-Katsidis, Cotto-Gomez and, finally, a little Hopkins-Calzaghe. Consider this the coles notes version of the last few weeks in boxing.

Not only is Matt Lindland a great fighter but, man, that guy can keep a secret. I had the pleasure of talking to “The Law” at a time where his name was very much in the news. Needless to say, I was looking for some answers. We knew he had signed with a promotion we just didn’t know which one. We knew he was planning on running for an Oregon State House of Representatives seat we just didn’t know why. We knew he had recently talked with Dana White about potentially returning to the UFC but didn’t know what came of those discussions. Well, two out of three ain’t bad. Lindland was more than willing to discuss his political career and his talks with White but his new contract? Hell no. I might have asked him ten questions regarding his new home only to be shut down every time. It felt like high school all over again. Plus, Lindland told us that the promotion he has signed with is established and has been running shows for a while so there’s that. We also spoke about why he left the UFC in the first place, Anderson Silva, the offer to appear on TUF 4 and his fight against Fedor. It’s an interesting one.</itunes:subtitle>

So what’s the deal with BET’s Iron Ring? Apparently, it debuts tomorrow and while no one is quite sure as to who will be fighting on the show(s) we do know which celebrities will be involved. Combat sports luminaries Nelly, Ludacris and Lil Jon will be some of the familiar names “coaching” the fighters. What exactly will they be doing? Who the hell knows but I hope their roles are more Jim Cornette than Pat Miletich. You know, interfere in the matches, get their hands dirty – that kind of thing. Anyhow, this week Live Audio Wrestling’s and The Fight Network’s John Pollock drops his POV on Iron Ring and, more specifically, some of their featured coaches.

They don’t get much more legendary than Dan “The Beast” Severn (left). Seriously, I could have asked Severn eight hours worth of questions with regards to his MMA and pro wrestling careers but instead I settled on forty minutes. And, boy, did we cover a lot: Why he continues to fight When he expects to retire for good His thoughts on the current MMA scene Did he ever think the sport would enjoy so much popularity The success of so many amateur wrestlers in MMA Lesnar-Coleman predictions Getting stripped of the NWA title prior to the first TNA show The biggest regret of his career His time in the WWF/E It’s not often that you get to speak to a legend who has excelled in wrestling and MMA so it was obviously a great thrill to chat with “The Beast.”

On Monday we invited Elite XC’s 160-pound champion, KJ Noons, to Jarry Park to discuss his upcoming title defense against Yves Edwards on 4/26. And, as promised, here is our chat with Edwards as he nears one of the most important fights of his illustrious career. Important because it was less than a year ago that Edwards had lost five of his last six bouts and, needless to say, some were wondering if he should call it quits. Three victories later, though, the Yves Edwards bandwagon is back in full force and he now finds himself one win away from full redemption. Other topics he touched on included: The Elite XC/CBS deal Will this fight be televised on CBS (I’m going to keep asking until I get answers damn it!) The amazing Edson Berto knockout His Bahamian brother – Kimbo Slice The evolution of KJ Noons as an MMA fighter The second coming of Yves Edwards

First came Fight Network Radio, then The Howard Stern Show followed by HollyScoop.com. So, naturally, it only made sense for Tito Ortiz to hit the final stop of “the big four” and make his debut at JarryPark.com. I tried my best not to ask him the usual stuff we’ve been hearing and while some of it was inevitable you’ll definitely find some interesting nuggets in there. First off, Ortiz discussed the highly-anticipated release of Zombie Strippers. I had to ask. Then, we spoke about whether his fight against Lyoto Machida on 5/24 will, in fact, be his last for the UFC (while all signs point to yes he did seem to leave some hope). We later talked about the demise of Ken Shamrock and whether he believes the 44-year-old threw the Buzz Berry fight (completely ludicrous if you ask me). Finally, we spoke about which promotions he may be interested in fighting for as well his run in TNA Wrestling. I always thought TNA could have done a hell of a lot more with Ortiz but he seemed to disagree...

Pollock's POV: The Elite XC On CBS Casting Call

One of the first thoughts that popped into my mind upon hearing the news that CBS would soon be televising Elite XC events was: Which play-by-play announcer will call the fights? Would it remain Mauro Ranallo or would the network look to bring in new talent? This might be the chance Gus Johnson has been waiting for. Well, it’s been a couple of weeks since the announcement and still no word on who will get the mic. So, The Fight Network’s John Pollock decided to hold an open casting call for any broadcaster in the business hoping to throw his (or her) name in the hat. Not surprisingly, the call was a success as the likes of Larry Merchant, Don West and Michael Buffer showed up. A solid crew, indeed.

Time to put UFC 82 to bed and focus our attention on the promotion’s 83rd pay-per-view offering – Serra-St.Pierre II from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. For obvious reasons, we’ll have extensive coverage of the UFC’s first foray into the great white north starting with today’s featured interview. It’s been close to sixteen months since Charles “Chainsaw” McCarthy competed in the Octagon and on April 19th he will help introduce Michael Bisping to the the middleweight division. Of course, McCarthy-Bisping marks The Count’s first UFC fight at 185 lbs and while some are considering McCarthy as a sacrificial lamb to get Bisping back on track, the American Top Team member has other plans in mind. Some of the topics we discussed included: His time away from the UFC Thoughts on Michael Bisping the fighter His take on Hammill-Bisping The state of the Middleweight division How he would attempt to defeat Anderson Silva

Patrycja Mikula Plays a game of "True or False"

It’s a question that has been on the minds of MMA fans for several months: Will Andrei Arlovski re-sign with the UFC or choose to fight elsewhere? Obviously, “the Pitbull” has kept his lips sealed so I decided to bypass him and go straight for the person closest to the former Heavyweight champ – girlfriend Patrycja Mikula. If you are fan of Playboy Magazine you might be familiar with Patrycja’s work. She’s the girl who tends to not be wearing much. More importantly, she is also a full-time resident of Jarry Park and was kind enough to talk about her beau’s future and even play a special game “True or False.” Some of the questions she answered in the game were: Was this Arlovski’s last fight in the UFC? Does Arlovski abstain from any kind of sexual relation before a bout? What’s his groupie situation like? That’s just a taste. Take a listen.

I’m sure most of the residents of Jarry Park have attended at least one UFC event at some point in their lives. Not so for our weekly ranter, John Pollock. The Fight Network Radio and Live Audio Wrestling producer popped his UFC cherry this weekend when he made a last-minute decision to drive down to Columbus, OH, to watch UFC 82. You may be thinking: “Ugh, not another blow-by-blow diary of a UFC weekend!” Au contraire, mes amis. Take a listen as Pollock recounts his memorable drive down to the Buckeye State in the midst of a snow storm and, most importantly, breaks down his top 5 observations from attending his first MMA event. If you’ve ever been to a show I think you’ll agree that Pollock’s POV is dead on.

Haynes makes his IFL debut tonight against Leopoldo Serao at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas (HDNet, 11 pm EST). Some of the topics we discussed included: How he hooked up with the IFL Why he chose to make the switch from Team Quest to Xtreme Couture Why things soured between him and the UFC His disappointment in what mixed martial artists earn for their fights The difference between fighting in a ring as opposed to a cage

If you ask me (and I know you didn’t but whatev), no one has more to prove at the IFL’s season opener than Ryan Schultz. The promotion’s first-ever Lightweight champion is coming off a shocking victory over arguably their most popular star in Chris Horodecki. Given the fact that he was such a late replacement, most, if not all, MMA enthusiasts weren’t expecting Schultz to hand Horodecki his very first loss but he did and tomorrow night “The Lion” heads to the ring as the hunted when he puts his belt on the line against John Gunderson. I spoke to Schultz about the upcoming fight and some other topics, such as: Has his life changed since defeating Horodecki? Why was he so confident going into that bout? Does he expect a rematch against Horodecki fairly soon? Does he deserve the right to main event tomorrow’s card? His mindset going into the bout as the champion as opposed to a huge underdog Has he received enough respect from the MMA community since becoming champion?

Since I have a feeling that Silva-Hendo might be one of the best main events of ‘08, I called upon one of the best MMA writers around – Sam Caplan of CBSSports.com, ProElite.com and Fiveouncesofpain.com – to preview the card. The main topics discussed included: Comparing the buzz leading up to this event as opposed to UFC 68 (the last card held in Columbus, OH) Do Pride titles even mean anything anymore? What does Dan Henderson need to do to derail the Spider? Is Cheick Kongo a legitimate Heavyweight contender? Evaluating Heath Herring’s UFC career What’s at stake for Jon Fitch and how dangerous is Chris Wilson? What does the future hold for Andrei Arlovski, Diego Sanchez and Josh Koscheck?

The main topics discussed included: Comparing the buzz leading up to this event as opposed to UFC 68 (the last card held in Columbus, OH) Do Pride titles even mean anything anymore? What does Dan Henderson need to do to derail the Spider? Is Cheick Kongo a legitimate Heavyweight contender? Evaluating Heath Herring’s UFC career What’s at stake for Jon Fitch and how dangerous is Chris Wilson?
Pollock's POV: When It comes To TNA, Less Is More

Welcome to another new feature at Jarry Park. Every Monday, the producer of Live Audio Wrestling and Fight Network Radio, John Pollock, will stop by to deliver his weekly rant on the world of combat sports. It’s a little something we like to call “Pollock’s POV.” This week, the Prodigy tackles the always head-scratching world of TNA wrestling. As Total Nonstop Action approaches its six year anniversary, the biggest question floating around the wrestling world is what needs to be done to take this promotion to the next level. Striking a deal with Spike TV? Perhaps. Moving to Thursday nights? Maybe. Two hours in prime time? Eh. So, Pollock has devised a perfect plan that will surely help rise TNA to the top. I can’t think of one person who would not be in favor of this.
