Point Blank: Venice Is Sinking’s Georgia Theatre Fundraiser!

Calling all lovers of independent music! This ‘Point Blank’ feature focuses the spotlight on the chamber pop loveliness that is Venice Is Sinking. I’ll explain everything in the podcast, but there’s some info below if you want to read along too. The Athens, GA band want to press their new album on vinyl and they need your help to do it, but they’re not going to make a penny from its sales, instead wanting to donate proceeds to a worthy cause. I’ll let them explain.. “On the morning of June 19, 2009, the Georgia Theatre was very nearly destroyed by a fire that gutted the whole building. It was a beautiful, historic building that had just gone extensive renovations, and it was an important landmark to the Athens music scene. Obviously, we are emotionally (and financially) tied to the building because we recorded our third album there, the one that we are raising money for right here! Wilmot Greene, the owner of the Theatre, helped finance this...

It was a beautiful, historic building that had just gone extensive renovations, and it was an important landmark to the Athens music scene. Obviously, we are emotionally (and financially) tied to the building because we recorded our third album there, the one that we are raising money for right here! Wilmot Greene, the owner of the Theatre, helped finance this project, so we feel beholden to him. Details are still very sketchy about rebuilding the Georgia Theatre and if it’s even possible, but we want to do whatever we can. We still want to make this record. In fact, we want to make it now more than ever! It stands as a document of the wonderful acoustics of an old building that will never be heard again. You can hear the Theatre in our album. It’s as much a player on the recording as we are! So, let’s consider this a fundraiser for the Theatre and not for us. We’re not gonna make a penny off this. All of the rewards still stand, and we’ll still make the album, but let’s try to go way over the 3000 bucks! Every cent of profit from this site will go toward the Wil, the Georgia Theatre, and the staff who treated us with such kindness and professionalism while we engaged in our experiment there. It’s not just about the building; it’s about the jobs of the people who work there, too. We don’t know how much we can pull in or what kind of difference these efforts will make, but we owe a lot to Wil and the Theatre. We don’t even know if this is the appropriate response, but it’s what feels right. We’ll keep you updated with our efforts. All the best, Venice is Sinking” So there you have it! DOWNLOAD | SUBSCRIBE Our first featured artist, TRAVIS OBERG grew up in the town of Dinuba, a farming community 30 miles south of Fresno. He now seems to operate out of Santa Cruz, CA with his backing band “Saltwater Merchants”, and his smooth vocals fall in the family tree lineage somewhere between James Taylor and Glen Phillips. Travis’ songs from his debut “Bloodlines” present an honest viewpoint on the importance of remembering where you’ve been, looking ahead to where you are going and the decisions that we make on this journey. His songs deal with life and loss, relationships, redemption, and offer hope in this sometimes uncertain and difficult day we live in. Music for Travis has always been about the ministry it allows; the strange and powerful way it can connect with people from every walk of life. TRAVIS OBERG – SELECTED TRACKS 1) Travis Oberg – Hurricane 2) Travis Oberg – Bloodlines “Writing songs is a trip! I am thrownback each time a new song arrives, like a surprise package in the mail. Songwriting is a challenge that keeps me awake at night, longing for the expressions to take on form and melody” – Travis Our second featured artist, WILL DERRYBERRY is based in the Bay Area of California – San Ramon specifically. He crafts meditative and ruminative songs laden with symbolic mystery, delivered on smooth yet raspy ethereal vocals akin to introspective singers such as Mike Mangione and Ray LaMontagne. Like Travis, Will also has ministry based roots, more apparent in his earlier material which focused on acoustic blues from a realistic slant, and then alternative pop rock, his voice emerging stronger and closer to his core as each album was released. Will returned to his folk, and blues roots with the album release of “Seven” in March 2008. Will admits, “I wanted to get back to writing those tunes that came more naturally to me, where I could let it all hang out, be vulnerable, and real. And, honestly, I wanted to make music that I would promote and perform for years.” WILL DERRYBERRY – SELECTED TRACKS 3) Will Derryberry – Seven 4) Will Derryberry – Where Your Heart Lives “I know that there is power in the stories and confessions of an honest lyric, as well, a melody that can take us to the place where our heart lives, struggles, and endures. Sharing this kind of song is my hope. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say we want and even need these kinds of songs because we have the innate desire to be connected with each other in an honest and intimate way.” – Will</itunes:subtitle>

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say we want and even need these kinds of songs because we have the innate desire to be connected with each other in an honest and intimate way.” – Will</itunes:summary>

Yes, as you will quickly notice, there is some sort of robotic, computer, and videogame nerdery meshed together unseamlessly in this episode, gladly supplied by this uber-geek. Seriously, we’ve got some great tracks and a few appearances by DJ’s from last month’s New Media Expo in Las Vegas, not to mention two artists have blood and sun in their names; what are the chances, and could that be an ominous sign? Enjoy and as usual, please help support all the hard-working artists below. TRT - 50:38 Not work safe!
We recently received a message from one of our favorite bands here at Insomnia. Patrick Keenan of The Winter Sounds wanted to proudly share one of the new tracks they just recorded over at Cacophony Recorders in Austin, and rightly so. Pinebox is the name of this beautiful new track and is now being released on a 3 song EP before the band makes it way to Athens in October and November to start afresh on their next full length album. The band would really appreciate any donations or EP purchases to help them make this goal, so they can rightly sink their heart and soul into the creation of the next full length we are all eagerly anticipating. Purchase links and donation information is location at their website: thewintersounds.com Tracks Sound Forged Like Spine Pinebox Trophy Wife (demo) Poetry (Winter: A Dirge by Robert Burns) DOWNLOAD | SUBSCRIBE| SUBSCRIBE TO ALL

We’ve graciously had one of the photographers at the event, Josh Kuckens, offer up a few images to be posted here, this specific image being “Film School”, an artist from both San Francisco & Los Angeles. Make sure to check out the rest of his photos, including a full sized version of this one, here. Also keep your eyes out for Side B of this series coming in the next day or two.
The 2008 Warped Tour engine fires up today in Pomona, California (US) and the musicians invited will spend the majority of the summer nomadically performing across the country, storming toward the East Coast and then making their way back to Carson, CA for a grand finale in mid-August. I’ve done my best to filter out the most breathy angst, gutteral Middle Earth vocals drowning out stellar instrumentation, excessive voice modulation, and tearful weeping hearts. What’s left are around fifty of the stronger tracks from a more well balanced range of music that I could locate, spread across three mixtapes - the first of which you can listen to here. You’ll find that some artists in this compilation are playing the entire tour, while a few have been chosen to play select dates. Please enjoy and keep your eyes out for the rest of the series, right on the heels of this hourlong driverless ride. Muahaha!
