Most of the stuff on here is acoustic guitar, but I feel free to stick any ideas up on this page, at any stage of development. Its better to record an idea than not to record it, or get bogged down in which take to use, or obsess about getting the right take of a solo, what reverb etc etc.

Spontaneous audio web publishing, thats what keeps it fresh.

One of the tunes on this site (Afro-Celt) has had over 200 plays, which isnt too bad, even if it took 9 months.

Thanks for listening! Who are you all?
Its not just me pressing play repeatedly…..is it?

I would love to know who you all are, particularly if you arent a mate who I have nagged into having a look….(i mean, I know they are, and where they live)
So, please add yourself to my Frappr map, just follow the link…

Go on, say hello, let me know your out there!

Homage a Monsieur le Maire

Monsieur Ali Farka Toure, the mayor of Niafunke in Mali (of course!) I have been listening to ‘In the heart of the moon’ a great deal and this style is very effective on guitar. Needs a break or chorus or something else though. and a kora player. I changed a string on his guitar once, when K’dum supported him at Lancaster Folk Festival. Really friendly man, and all I could think of to say was ‘bonjour, c’est un honneur’ or something. Great shame to hear of his death recently. I remember the warmth of his stage presence well. Its something other performers could do well to remember, he actually seemed pleased to be playing (unlike some performers I could mention – Mose Fan Fan being top of the list)

This was recorded on my mobile on at Gerry’s in Sanquhar on Harry’s mens’ weekend. no way of direct transfer of the file so its the old lo-fi method of holding the phone up to the mic. There are echoes of the Sousa march ‘Great dreams of Heaven’ hence the title. Actually its Blind melon jetlag from the 1930s on an old 78 I found.

More playing about with an instrument hanging around the house – in this case an ocarina brought back from Arizona for Luke by Grandma and Grandpa. Maybe we can get Luke to play and record a tune too. I did some manipulation of the sound in Audacity and copied it twice, taking the pitch down an octave each time. Although it distorted a little, the sound is not unlike some of the American Indian pipe music. Controlling the pitch and getting the problem takes practice with this one.

Some times you have got to get ideas down when they occur to you. The GVerb effect on audacity is a bit unpredictable, what can sound ok in a preview can end up drowning your track in reverb, but this doesnt really matter. As this was 2.00 am on xmas day it gives an appropriate atmosphere.

<itunes:summary>Some times you have got to get ideas down when they occur to you. The GVerb effect on audacity is a bit unpredictable, what can sound ok in a preview can end up drowning your track in reverb, but this doesnt really matter.

An echo loop for a backing is great for filling the gaps. Dug the old electric out and had a strum. There are two tunes in here that morph into one another because they are both in E Enjoy, have a good break. Please leave a comment or subscribe if you like this stuff.

I try and write solo stuff for the guitar, but I hope some day that I can add some lyrics. The recording sounds a little dry because thats the way it was recorded. Its better to get it down and get it out there rather than spend hours tweaking the sound, but when I have time its good to do that too – but when do I have time?
