I love discovering new bands. The Baghdaddios are not “new” but to me they sound fresh, upbeat and pretty rocking. I met Kenn Rowell, the lead singer when I received a link to The Baghdaddios’ holiday classic, “Christmas at CBGBs”. I was instantly drawing to the music.

Kenn has giving me his blessing to share the bands songs here. Check it out! Feedback please.

What's the Use - Kev Saunders

(Kev Saunders is a friend of The Baghdaddios) When I wrote this song it just didn’t fit with either the punk funk/acid jazz/trip hop stuff I was recording with Marden Hill – or with the hard rock I was making in NYC with The Takashi O’Hashi Project. So it just hung around and never got recorded – until now. It’s a bitter and twisted lyric about suddenly realizing that the woman you love was only ever in love with the prospect of money and success. Not you. But although that’s pretty miserable it’s ironically uplifting – because once you know that, you’re free and she’s the loser. It ain’t radical. But it’s passionate and I mean it. This is the sound of a punk rocker/left field trip hop singer/writer inadvertently coming up with a song his mum likes. Jesus – I’ve written a pop song!

Kenn calls in to the international internet metal and punk radio programme for the 2nd time – this time Tom tries to straighten out the multiple phone connection that allows Kenn and former Baghdaddios bassist (Baghdaddios Hall of Fame Charter Member!) John Sidoti to reminisce about their friendship, the early days, John flying out from Wisconsin to fill in on bass for a recent 9/11 tribute show at C.B.G.B.s and then driving with the band for one of their Texas Ten Acre Jam appearances – along with occasional appearances in the Midwest. Also on the programme, UK caller Charlie discusses his “low-budget movies” and suggests that he scout for additional shows in London for The Baghdaddios’ upcoming UK tour.

Abbie Hoffman

Off of the Willie Horton Hears A Who CD 1996 EVERYONE knows who Abbie Hoffman is – or if they don’t they should. The man practically invented demonstration-as-performance-art. He drew attention to problems that were plaguing our society at the time like our involvement in the War in Vietnam, urban decay, the need for health care for the elderly, substandard living conditions in our inner cities. One of the last times he was arrested was because he and his fellow-activist son, Andrew, were giving out needles to junkies in public – as a way of helping combat the spread of A.I.D.S. But, sadly, Abbie couldn’t get a post-Gordon Gecko, 80s world to listen to his message of “Change starts with you”. When he took his life in 1989 it signaled the true end to the 60s counter-culture revolution. One of it’s most positive and strongest voices had silenced itself – frustrated with the corporate globalization of our culture. One of it’s most positive and strongest voices had silenced itself – frustrated with the corporate globalization of our culture. America, Inc. – and equally frustrated with a mass populi that just didn’t seem to care. I remember hearing him on the Howard Stern Show talking about Live Aid – and he made a great point: sure it’s good to help starving people around the world – but he felt that our media and government were turning our attention to far away places – at the expense of those less fortunate in THIS country – it was more glamorous to hold a benefit concert for people in Africa than it was to confront the ugliness in the depressed mountain towns of Appalachia or the cyclical poverty that self-perpetuates itself in our ghettos and slums of every major U.S. City. You might not have agreed with everything he said – or even the way that he sometimes made his point – but this was a man who truly laid his life on the line for his personal beliefs – along with his personal health, reputation and even personal fortune. And regardless of which side of the fence you stood on you HAD to admire the man for that. This song is dedicated to every starry-eyed dreamer who ever wanted to make his or her little section of the planet just a LITTLE bit better for their fellow man and woman. Amen Brutha, Amen Sistah.
Let’s Rock America is a grass-roots, independent music organization that started a few years ago in Northern New Jersey. What started as just a pro-active website has now grown into an international movement – LRA even sponsored the first NJ Blank-Fest in December of 2006, netting over 200 total donations! In July of 2006 LRA co-founder, Rich Kubicz decided to turn their interviews from mere print media to audio podcasts. The Baghdaddios were selected as the first-ever podcast interviewees. Hear the band talk about their latest effort, the at-the-time-just-released “Autopsy-Turvy”, their landmark debut CD, “Willie Horton Hears A Who” and it’s impact on independent play lists over the years. Among the many other subjects tackled: many of the band’s fellow NYC indie acts, the impetus behind the whole writing and recording process, future plans, now-10-year-old Blank-Fest benefit concert series to benefit NYC’s homeless, founded by The Baghdaddios’ Rowell, collaboration with several NY...

Roll Over And Die (Live) - The Baghdaddios

Mike McGinnis is a tremendous talent, schooled in jazz, performance, theory and writing. He has toured internationally with the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra, has arranged for Barry Manilow and has recorded – as well as started an independent jazz label – with Ravi Coltrane. He arranged the horn section and performed on “Culture Decay”, which appears on The Baghdaddios album, “Autopsy-Turvy”. He was in the audience at C.B.G.B.s (on NYC’s Lower East Side) on May 1, 2002 when he was asked by Kenn Rowell of The Baghdaddios to sit in with the band for one song – what resulted was probably one of the best impromptu live collaborations the band had ever done with ANY guest soloist. Witness his incredible improvisation technique throughout the R&B, early Beatles-Cavern-Club-like-rocker “Roll Over and Die” (off their debut album, “Willie Horton Hears A Who”).
