Upon listening back to this first Tokyo Calling recording, which was first released five years ago today, I've decided not to re-release entire past episodes through this channel. It really is quite embarrassing to listen back. I'm not sure what value it will hold for new listeners. Still the archive project remains a goal. I'm just too busy at present to make any progress in that direction. I've had occasion to reflect upon my podcasting journey over the past five years as this date has approached. I've benefitted greatly from the experience. There have also been costs incurred on personal, professional and financial fronts that have at times made it difficult to justify the project. So without further ado, let me present the mp3 that heralded the arrival of Japan's First Podcast: Click the magic button for lo-fidelity trip back in time: .
With the fifth anniversary re-issue of episode 1 less than a week away, I thought I ought to listen back to the first Tokyo Calling recordings. It took some doing to track down the old files. Once found, I loaded the first dozen or so episodes on the iPod Touch with the intention of listening back during a Monday's idle moments. Frankly, the experience of revisiting words spoken 5 years earlier is a bit unnerving. Hopefully there is some benefit in reconnecting with the past in this manner. Click the magic button for some muddled thoughts on the Listening Back: . Also included with the recording is an audio memo sent in by Bob Sprankle. Bob is a grade-school teacher and long-time podcaster from the United States. As the 100th episode of his Bit by Bit podcast approaches, he too has been revisiting where and how his podcasting journey began. He's invited me to join him for a recorded conversation examining some of the matters I've been grappling with in my own journey. I am grateful ...

Click the magic button to hear what's brought me back: . Also featured in this podcast is an excerpt from the October 6h broadcast of The Dusty show on WFMU along with a recounting of the frightening experience that occurred while I listened to a podcast of the show. Check out the entire episode from Clay Pigeon's archive at WFMU. In this recording, I also direct listeners' attention to what I consider to be the best Japan-based English language podcast: Japan Podshow. Please give George and Joseph and see what you think. Up next, fifth year anniversary re-release of episode 1 of what was Japan's First Podcast. Stay subscribed. Thanks for listening.

(click the magic button to hear or download the 32 minute episode) In this very exciting end of year episode I discuss what it means to be "The King of Podcasting." There's also a bit of reflection on some of the year's especially weird points for Tokyo Calling. And finally, there's an imagined flashback preview of the year to come. I'll have more to say about King-ly matters in my "State of Podcasting" report in early February. Until then, please accept my sincere wish for everyone to have a fun and interesting trip in 2009. We will do all we can to make sure things don't get too weird.

(click the magic button to hear or download the 42 minute episode) I had a bit of left over audio from last June and July. Seemed that I might be able to beg the indulgence of the many kind listeners to allow me to submit this haphazard effort as an episode. It is after all the holiday season. Actually, had I not taken a three month hiatus, this would have been episode 122 (hence the repeated reference to that episode number). Listening and thinking back, I've realized that a couple of the recordings took place at fairly pivotal moments in the life of Japan's First Podcaster. Note: There's a whole slew of obscure show biz references that will require an extensive list of links. I hope to update this post with those links in the coming days... Until then, Thanks for listening.

The recorder managed to pick up a nice bit of atmosphere walking through a luxury hotel in central Tokyo on my way to a teaching gig. And then, I managed to wrap up the story from the preceding episode while walking along a busy roadway. There's even an opportunity for you to participate in the comments by sharing your advice for the new recruits at your company. And then I entered the building for my final lesson of a company class I've been teaching with the promise to complete the episode later. Unfortunately things didn't go as hoped. I've got a busy couple of weeks ahead and if I don't put this out now, chances are that I never well. Perhaps that would have been better. I hope no one is too put off by this less than complete episode. I'll try to double-up and catch-up with the next one. Thanks for listening.
(click the magic button to hear or download the 28 minute episode) This episode is part 1 of a multi-part series featuring stories from some of the big shots I've been teaching recently. The short bit of audio that appears between the last two segments features some cut-up excerpts from a video on creating compelling elevator speeches from SellingPower.com and was done with Garagband. Part two should be coming later this week. Thanks for listening.

(click the magic button to hear or download the 23 minute episode) Quite by accident, I seem to have stumbled upon a format that is fun to record, relatively easy to produce, and hopefully not too unpleasant on the ear. I'm thinking of calling it a "How do 'ya do - cast." Is that corny enough? More music from Lizards From Afar is featured in the middle of this episode. My apologies for not announcing the song more professionally in the previous episode - but hey, I'm a goober, aren't I, son?
(click the magic button to hear or download the 11 minute episode) Sir Pent, the drummer from Lizards From Afar, asked me to play a song from his band on the podcast. He said he was a long time listener and thought the other Tokyo Calling listeners would enjoy hearing the band. As a rock and roll kind of guy, I told him I'd be honored to play their song "Mr. Peabody" on the next episode. As production of that next episode (#124) began to take shape, irony reared it's ironical head and it became clear that rock and roll would not fit. Episode 124, you see, is going to be more a drum and bass kind of thing. But I couldn't let the Lizards From Afar down, I'd made a promise to play their song in the next episode. How fortunate that this short episode popped into my head on the way to the station from the radio class in Minato ward. How fortunate that this short episode popped into my head on the way to the station from the radio class in Minato ward. It is a rambling recounting of a passing thought from earlier in the day that was centered around a memory from the day before in relation to a song from the 80's and another from the 70's which led to knee slapping bit of discourse analysis on a recurring speech act by everyone's favorite Loony Toons rooster. If ever an episode of Japan's First Podcast deserved rock and roll, it would be this one (#123). And the most amazing part of it all is that the premise of Sir Pent's band's song - time displacement - will play a not insignificant role in episode 124. It's funny how things work out sometimes.</itunes:subtitle>

(click the magic button to hear or download the 31 minute episode) Would you believe ... a new podcast episode? Many thanks to everyone who sent words of support and encouragement during the recent three month hiatus. The time away from the podcast has provided an opportunity to ponder where things are going with Japan's podcast. This episode is, in essence, a meditation on those ponderings. In short: Tokyo Calling is back (just in time for the fifth anniversary)!

(click the magic button to hear or download the 9 minute episode) It seems that this is the time of year when this podcast always appears to crash and burn. Over the past three years a number of folks had declared an end to Tokyo Calling through the silent weeks of late May, June and July. Some might even have felt that the pattern was beginning to repeat itself this year. The point of this short little recording is to declare that nothing could be further from the truth. Though, the frequency of offerings will most probably decline in the coming weeks, this podcaster feels more committed to this project than ever before. Essentially, my whole purpose in putting this episode out is to rid myself of of some self-imposed pressure and potential anxiety - for the record. Stay tuned, episode 120 will be vastly different than this one.

Essentially, my whole purpose in putting this episode out is to rid myself of of some self-imposed pressure and potential anxiety - for the record. Stay tuned, episode 120 will be vastly different than this one.</itunes:summary>

(click the magic button to hear or download the 48 minute episode) Well, it's done. It was a fun, challenging and exciting process to put this one together. This is an example of the direction I'd like to take the Tokyo Calling podcast (what am I signing myself on to do?) - there are other ideas in the works as well. I'm not quite sure how to describe this one. The phrase "audio melange" came up in the Twitter this past week. If you have any ideas about what to call this sort of thing (besides steaming hunk of junk), leave a comment. Oh and another one of these will be coming around next week in conjunction with the live recording on TalkShoe. If you can find the time, would love to have you join in. Relevant Links: Illinois Street Lounge The Game of the Century The mystery voice with the show ID toward the end of the episode (after the crows) recorded live on TalkShoe on 051408 The photo accompanying this blog entry is entitled Graffiti Chess and is generously shared by David Wilmo...

(click the magic button to hear or download the 33 minute episode) It looks like Japan's First Podcast will be coming through TalkShoe for the foreseeable future. Free hosting that actually returns a small sum compared to paid hosting leaves no choice. This is especially the case considering some decisions I've made about future directions for this podcast. All the details are laid out in a semi-coherent form in the later half of the episode. In the first half is the Kodomonohi fukubiki story I promised on twitter earlier today. Spoiler: the image for this blog post is the one mentioned in the story. For those interested in participating in the live post-show chat on TalkShoe next week, please note the new time that has been scheduled (Wednesday morning in Japan and Tuesday evening in USA).

(click the magic button to hear or download the 19 minute episode) I decided to wrap up the week with one more bit of audio. This didn't work so well over the TalkShoe because of the low quality of the recording. I was surrounded by noise and wind as I made the walk from Iidabashi to Suidobashi. Hopefully, there's enough here to warrant putting it out as an episode.

(click the magic button to hear or download the 20 minute glimpse behind the curtain) The best part of this TalkShoe cast took place after the recording. Thanks to Aaron, Randulo, Mafuchan, Zaren and others for a fun and lively conversation. In the recording, I apologized for and tried to explain the recent lack of podcast episodes. Next a big thank you was sent out to some generous listeners. There's also an awkward moment where I mentioned some recent examples of how my own prejudices and misconceptions have been made clear. And finally, I give the highest possible recommendation for anyone with half-a-mind and a pair-of-ears to listen to The Black Tie Martini Club Oddcast. Also mentioned, and very much checking out is the SLPN.

After too many months of dormancy, the ZionRadio Padcast feed delivered three tasty 70 minute mp3s to iTunes this morning. I listened to a hypnotizing episode entitled "music a fe rule" throughout the various stages of my commute during the day. The idea for this audio miniature occurred while listening to twisting-sweep-in-a-swamp sort of jam at the 49 minute mark whilst thinking about Orson Welles on the way home after a long day in the classroom. Sadly, the ZionRadio website seems a bit out of date. I couldn't find playlists for the recently arrived podcast. Best bet if you wanna listen is to subscribe to feed: http://www.zionradio.com/podcasts/zionradiopodcast.xml.

Podcast: Tokyo Calling 107 (click to listen) Getting Started Inspired by a couple of blogging and self-help gurus, this podcast features a few of my personal and podcasting goals for the coming year. Problogger goes so far as to schedule a Resolution and Goal Setting brunch at the beginning of every year with his wife. I don't know if Mrs. Tokyo Calling or the TC Singers would tolerate such indulgence. Though, I don't doubt its value. Looked at from another angle, in his Personal Development for Smart People blog, Steve Pavlina discusses letting your intuition tell you what sort of year you'd like to have in a journal in a post from 2006. <itunes:subtitle>Podcast: Tokyo Calling 107 (click to listen) Getting Started Inspired by a couple of blogging and self-help gurus, this podcast features a few of my personal and podcasting goals for the coming year. Problogger goes so far as to schedule a Resolution and Goal Setting brunch at the beginning of every year with his wife. I don't know if Mrs. Tokyo Calling or the TC Singers would tolerate such indulgence. Though, I don't doubt its value. Later in the episode Instead of getting ready for the resumption of classes during the break, my focus has been turned more inward. I'm grateful to BicycleMark of CitizenReporter.org for his tip on a great journaling application for Macs. Simply enough, it's called Journler. It has been a timely discovery which I've used to begin digitally archiving the past nine months worth of hand-written and until now unexamined journals. This has been a rewarding experience. Finally I close with an announcement about a contest that could get you a free trip to Tokyo to vlog the 2008 Tokyo International Anime Fair. The graphic with this blog post will also take you to the contest which, as far as I can tell, is sponsored by AnimePodcast.Net. A tip of the hat to Jimmy-khun in Parsippany, NJ for sending his video entry and informing me about this cool opportunity. The entry deadline is February 15, 2008. Good luck, Jimmy-khun. Also Did I mention Tokyo Calling TV is still around? It is, have a look Comments and suggestions are welcome Thanks to Mark for the kind donation As Always Thanks for listening. And may you meet all of your goals! addendum: I forgot to add links to Internet Eavesdropping kit mentioned in the podcast: Internet Eavesdropping - pdf document The article where the document can be found The online OPML generating tool mentioned in the document (Please be careful with this information. In the wrong hands - there could be danger)</itunes:subtitle>

Recorded on my way to and from a Saturday make-up lesson at the science university, this 30 minute he's-at-it-again-cast features thoughts on my second daughter's recent attempt to enter a national elementary school and how that effort impacted our family. Also included is a debriefing on the lessons in which I showed and asked the engineering and business management students to write about some holiday videos I'd recently found online. The most popular video among the students seemed to an excerpt from the Robot Chicken Christmas special which features a send-up of DragonBall Z (note: the linked-to video is of a mature theme). Unfortunately, I didn't have the energy include the TCTC segment I mentioned during the cast. That will have to wait until the next episode. At the current rate the podcast is going, that should be sooner rather than later. As always, thanks for listening!!

Wish I could blame the poor sound of this 24 minute echo-chamber-cast on the pain killers from my recent injury. In fact, some dude giving a talk on podcasting at a recent Tokyo Mac Users Group (RINGO) meeting recommended using a bit of reverb when recording. He said it would add a little something. Unfortunately, I recorded with some of it instead of adding it after the fact. My fear is that this is unlistenable. In the final five minutes I explain the links below to my Mother's new online endeavor. Please pay her a visit and tell her Tokyo Calling sent you, if your so inclined. Relevant Links: Baba Knits blog Baba Knits online shop
