the idea behind this podcast, baking peace, it to show that we all have a common connection through food. we all need it, we all use it to celebrate, mourn, soothe, placate… i want to take recipes from around the world and show just what we all have in common. the first one i have done on my own, but later (soon) i will have guests coming in to cook and talk about how food is used in their culture.

the first 5 shows here have been uploaded from a previous provider. the rest will be created here. i am not sure about the quality of the uploaded shows, but i hope they did not warp in the transfer :-)

Mandaean Chicken (Iraqi)

This is the first in a series of international guests who will share their food culture with us. This dish, Mandaean Chicken, comes from Iraq and was prepared by Suzan. We begin with the preparation of the dish, but end with an interesting discussion of the Mandaean religion over dinner. Warning: This podcast contains a lot of giggling. You would think that we had a bit too much wine, but we did not have any. We were just having a good time. As I do more of these, the format will become something, well, better? Anyway…it was great fun! Also, we used Cubase and Sound Forge to edit and mix this post which was also interesting. A big thanks to Max and Suzan for sharing their culture and dish with us!! post and pictures here http://www.sumofmyparts.com/bakeback/?p=5

polish apple pie

ok :-) second attempt at a podcast! (things to think about for next time…better fades, levels, using a mic that goes where i go…) Last night I went to moonshake, a concert put on (in part) by Jim (who also played didge in it). There were parts that I really liked, and parts that I liked less…but overall a good time and great music. My favorite piece of ear candy was by a Polish couple that played singing bowls in the beginning of their first song. Probably one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. I have put together bits and pieces of the concert together with my latest pastry, Babcia’s apple pie, a Polish apple pie. post and pictures found here http://www.sumofmyparts.com/bakeback/?p=2

I made this podcast due to my outrage at the continued racism that I experienced in Alabama. It took me a long time to rationalize within myself that I came from a place where such sentiments are still alive and well. It is inexcusable that this still exists! It is inexcusable that we do not take care of each other! Lets do something! Let’s attempt to make a little peace… pictures and post here http://www.sumofmyparts.com/bakeback/?p=4
