Yaakov Chessed Sampler!

akov Chesed is back with their new album “The Passage”. Fans of the bands previsou album, “Rise Above”, will most certainly enjoy many of the tracks on the new CD, especially songs “All I Ask” and “Tzamah”, which display a similar rock spirituality to the bands huge hit, “Shema Yisroel”. Not wishing to diverge from their sound too much, the band certainly keeps to their musical style but also adds new depths on “The Passage”. All band members were involved with the vocals, and this album will feature some choir arrangements- a first from Yaakov Chesed. There are also more strings than on “Rise Above”, no horns, and some tracks were given more of a pop twist- the catchy track “Now I Know” sounds like something Avril Lavigne and Netasha Bedingfield might make if they were frum Jews. There are also some soft and soothing ballads such as “Mi Bon Siyach” and the sweeping “Eishes Chayil” which both the band and distributors Sameach believe will be a big hit for Yaakov Chesed.
The JMDerech Experience – Shloime Kaufman

I was attending the chassuna of my wife’s friend Sunday night in Brooklyn. As any good music reporter would do, I brought my mini camcorder in hand. Also, I had asked Shloime if he would mind a duet, the two of us, singing my favorite song “Yigdal” from his debut album, Avodas Tzedaka. Shloime, being the nice guy he is, agreed without even hearing if I could sing. When I entered the halls of Kings Terrace, little did I know of the “magic” that would take place that night. Sure, people were dressed all fancy, and a chassuna is a perfect setting for a good taste, not of food (although it was good!), but rather music! The music was so good it exceeded my expectations. Ya, so I haven’t been to a ton of a chassuna’s, but I’ve been to a good share of them and none of them had this quality of music. Neshoma Orchestra was fantastic. From the chuppah to the dance floor, they were flawless. My favorite player was the violinist Asher Laub. Don&#8...

From the chuppah to the dance floor, they were flawless. My favorite player was the violinist Asher Laub. Don’t get me wrong, every one of the musicians played their instrument to its peak, but there’s something about the way Laub delicately wove his bow back and forth across the violin making that perfect pitch! Kaufman was something else all together! He was so into the chassuna and you could tell it was genuine. He was dancing with the olam (crowd), smiling, and all over ecstatic, pumping up the chassuna to what it was, a beautifully orchestrated simcha between two children of B’nai Yisrael. G-d willing, Moshiach will come soon and bring the geula and I hope to see Shloime and the rest of the guys that played that night as part of the musicians who welcome him. There was nothing greater than seeing the joy that the music brought to chassan and kallah (no I was not on the women’s side :P) on their wedding night. I know what your thinking, I must know Laub or Kaufman or any of the guys with Neshoma, but no, that assumption is incorrect. I’m not doing this for the sake of publicity, I’m definitely not getting paid (checks wallet), yup definitely not getting paid. :) I just feel that many people have questions about what orchestra to choose and I hope that this small write up can help them choose. Let me tell you something, Shloime Kaufman and the Neshoma Orchestra are a class act. They are super professional and all around fun to watch! I filmed a number of songs, but I decided to post the songs that Kaufman is known for. Kol Yisroel, Avodas Tzedaka & Yigdal. If you think he sounds good live, hear him on his debut album, Avodas Tzedaka. You won’t regret buying it. See a review of the album I wrote here. Shimie Braun on Keys Ari Boiangiu on Guitars Moe Rosenblum on Drums Asher Laub on Violin Mr.Laskin on Sax Any singers or orchestras who are interested in being a part of the ongoing “JMDerech Experience” series, all I request is a chance at the mic and and email to be sent to me at jmderech@gmail.com. A few things I need to say up front. For starters, I am writing this review at an obscene hour of the morning, so forgive me if I don’t mention which album each song is from. Miami has released so many albums, it would take a while to track down each song. Given that everyone wants to read concert reviews right away, I am not going to spend the time naming each album. Next: the crowd was a little different than what you normally see at a concert, in that there were no white shirted yeshiva bochurim dancing in the aisles, cheering and singing along. From the pictures I have seen of the audience at the Fried mit Lipa concert it looks like they all went there. A pity that two such good concerts were scheduled for the same night. But not to worry. Yeshiva bochurim don’t have the monopoly on being leibidic and there was plenty of energy in the audience. Yerachmiel Begun seems to have heard our disappointment with the pint sized band he used at the Pesach concert, and this concert featured five musicians: keyboard, drums, bass guitar, guitar and another musician who played assorted horns. The sound level and mixes were better at this concert than at most I have heard and the lighting was used nicely to enhance the concert. Aside from the boys, this years concert also featured singer/composer Baruch Levine and The Alumni, who were the opening act. While MC Yoily Karr did announce their names, I didn’t catch them and couldn’t tell you for sure who they were. They clearly have nice voices and were enjoyable to listen to. They also seemed to have brought their own cheering section with them. This was one leibidic crowd. Their first song was Ilu, probably the only song I can remember that The Alumni ever sang. They followed that up with Miami’s Mehaira which they then took into P’sach Libi. While the Alumni were perfectly fine, they are not exactly a household name and I would have enjoyed if they had added one more performer to the roster that was a little more well known. Baruch Levine, as usual, was hartzig, sweet and a welcome treat. His first song Shalom, from his Chosson HaTorah album, was one of the few songs he did where he didn’t play piano, which is how I enjoy Baruch Levine most. After that it was piano time and Levine performed my favorite song from his last album, Ki Hu. One thing I’ve noticed about Baruch Levine is that when he comes on stage, he always takes a water bottle with him and tonight was no exception. He opened up the water bottle, poured it into a glass and announced “Mommy, this glass is for you” as he explained to the audience that his mother was in the audience and she always tells him to drink out of a glass instead of straight out of the bottle. Next, Levine sang Kol Haberuim and the audience clapped enthusiastically along with him as he sang the high part. And then it was time for the main event. So many things I want to say before I get down to what they sang. First of all, I estimated that there were nineteen boys in the choir. (I could be wrong. They kept moving around.) I’m guessing there were about eight younger boys and the rest seemed to be anywhere from seventh through ninth grade. I know that at least one of those boys is in high school already. Which means that while right now Begun has some seasoned performers, he is going to have to start cultivating the younger kids. The ones he had on stage tonight were all terrific and showed lots of potential. Second, because there weren’t a lot of boys on stage, each kid had his own mike. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before and they were able to get a fuller sound out of the kids. There were a few instances where a few mikes weren’t working well, but all the issues were worked out quickly and painlessly. Third, no mikes on the stage gave the boys a lot more room to dance. And wow, did these boys dance. This wasn’t just motions to go along with the music, these kids were REALLY moving up there. There were times when they appeared to be simcha dancing, but there were other times where some of the moves had just a little too much movement in them for my taste. Fourth: Costumes. While I can’t tell you that I would ever want to see my son wearing sequins, the idea that the boys were changing their costumes and coming out on stage looking completely different from time to time added to the professionalism of the choir. Fifth: Music. There is no question that not all the music that you heard was being played live. Stay tuned for more on that one. There were a few times during the concert when I wondered if there was also some choir on the soundtrack, but I honestly don’t know. Sixth: Names. I’m sorry, I just don’t know most of their names. They did introduce the boys at the end, but there is just no way I can tell you who sang which solo on which song. Seventh: My apologies to Yerachmiel Begun. I was so busy keeping track of songs, costumes and all the other details, while at the same time trying to video that I wasn’t able to keep track of when he came out and sang. Suffice it to say that he made occasional appearances and enhanced the boys performance, really giving them the opportunity to be the stars of the show. Eighth: There is something so professional about a boys choir performing and doing a great job on stage without anyone up front directing them. I can’t think of another choir that does that. Again, these boys are real pros as became obvious a little later. No hints yet. Just keep reading. The choir’s opening number was Galey, from Miami Yovo. The boys came out dressed in either shiny silver shirts with maroon ties or shiny maroon shirts with silver ties amid swirls of fog and lots of lighting schtick. A four level riser in the middle of the stage gave the boys a lot to work with in terms of placement and choreography and they used the space well. It looked to be the same arrangement that they used in their Pesach concert, but do you really expect a concert with no repeats from the last concert? As long as they mix things up a little, I don’t mind. Their next song was Yerushalayim, which, unfortunately, did not feature Yoshi Bender doing his chazanus at the beginning. A word about Yoshi Bender. Now an eighth grader, his voice has gotten very deep and while his solos were excellent, he had very few of them. But it didn’t matter. That kid owned the stage and is an unbelievable dancer. I can’t imagine what it’s like for a boy to deal with the idea that he can’t hit the notes he used to be able to but Yoshi Bender seemed to handle it with grace and dignity and there were many moments during the night where the crowd was calling his name. Next were some oldies: Al Eileh from Miami Moshiach and Nikadesh from Shiru Lo. Both slow songs, both pretty, both gave the boys a little bit of a chance to rest as they arranged themselves on the risers and took advantage of an opportunity to sit down. Baavur David featured only five boys: Yoshi Bender, Yair Kenig, Jeremy Hershkowitz, David Hershkowitz and Moshe Yaakov Braun. (I may have gotten the names wrong. Someone please correct me if I did?) Yerachmiel Begun came out and gave a short d’var Torah on Esa Einai, before the boys began the song, all wearing suit jackets over their shiny shirts. The last song before intermission was Moshiach and watching those boys, you’d think they had springs for legs. To be able to sing and dance like that all at the same time? Wow. I don’t think I had their energy at that age! After a brief intermission The Miami Alumni were back and I definitely enjoyed them more their second time on stage. They sang a few Carlebach songs: Oseh Shalom, Esa Einai and Shomrim Hafked. After seeing the boys choir perform, it was funny to see the Alumni and realize that one day, these boys will be grown men in suits, sporting five o’clock shadow. Baruch Levine returned to the stage with a story of how he asked Abie Rotenberg the secret of song writing and he replied that the music should be an expression of the meaning of the lyrics. Levine acknowledged his parents, in laws and children, all of whom were in the audience and expressed the hope that the words of his next song, obviously V’Zakeini, would one day be fulfilled. Instead of a sweet voiced boy joining Levine for this song, it was Yerachmiel Begun who was invited onstage and the duet was truly lovely. Next, Levine told a story about a song that he wrote on Simchas Torah almost two years ago. As he stood in Shul at the end of layning, the music for the song Chosson Hatorah came to him, but being yom tov, he was unable to record the music anywhere, so he spent the rest of the day singing the song to himself, in the hopes that he wouldn’t forget it. Levine sang energetically and the crowd was more than happy to help him out. Miami was back next with a medley of older songs including, Lo Yisa Goy, Od Yishama and Ki Hashem, among others, each song featuring a group of boys in different costumes. Remember at the beginning when I told you things were going to get really interesting? Well, here we go. Fasten your seatbelts. It’s kind of ironic that the words to this song were Me’im Hashem, because what happened next truly was. The boys came out in a costume I have never seen before: a navy blue vest with a white v-neck. Begun introduced the song and the crowd was clapping enthusiastically as the boys began singing. Now, I will tell you that there were definitely moments in the concert when it was obvious that some of the music that you heard was coming from a soundtrack. How can you hear violins when there are none on stage? But I don’t think that’s a big issue. At least it wouldn’t be if something hadn’t gone wrong with the soundtrack halfway through the song and it just stopped in the middle of a solo. You can see the soloist looking around in confusion, but he had the presence of mind to just keep going. It took just a few seconds for Begun to start singing along with the boys from backstage. You have to understand, it wasn’t like there the band was playing in addition to the soundtrack. ALL the background music was on the soundtrack and it just stopped. Completely. You can see the kids looking around in confusion, but they kept their cool and just kept going. The audience started clapping in time to the beat to keep the kids going and they did just that, first with Begun singing in the background and eventually with some accompaniment from the band. The fact that Begun did not come out on stage to rescue the boys tells you just how much confidence he had in them to handle the glitch and they more than rose to the occasion. The song finished amid thunderous applause from the audience. Don’t worry. I got the whole thing on video. :) Next up, Revach. For me, I don’t think Revach will ever be better than it was on the Miami Revach DVD, but I know. You can’t compare live to a DVD. The stage crew rolled out the piano again, but not for Boruch Levine this time. It was for Yair Kenig singing the heartfelt Azor Na, accompanied by Stanislov Nikolov on the violin, truly a hartzig and beautiful moment. Kenig is clearly a very talented boy. Finally, finally the song everyone was waiting for: Yovo. The song began with the boys, newly changed into black sequined vests, lying on the floor amid swirling fog and as the song began they rose up slowly, as if rising up from the dead. The song was awesome, so good in fact that I thought it was the finale. The boys captured the energy of the song and it sounded almost as good as it did on the CD which makes me wonder if there was a soundtrack behind the boys to capture the fullness and the many harmonies of the song. The song ended, unfortunately, with the boys laying back down on the floor amid the swirling fog and it reminded me of the graveyard sequence in Fiddler on the Roof. I didn’t have a problem with the image of the boys simulating Techiyas Hamaysim but the idea of these boys going back to their graves was a little creepy for me. After the ebullient Yovo, the boys needed a break and they followed up with Mehaira from their latest album, sitting on the risers, starting and ending the song with their heads down on their arms. Before the finale, Begun took a minute to introduce all the boys to the audience and then he told the audience he wanted everyone on their feet for the finale. The mikes got turned up really loud, there were lights swirling all over the place and the room really rocked for Ayom V’Nora. I have to tell you that I don’t get the idea for a really leibidic song with the lyrics “Ayom V’nora”, but what do I know. It’s not like I’m a lyricist or anything. And that was it for the night. All in all, the concert, the first Miami concert I have ever been to, was a great night, full of fun and great music. The boys were consummate professionals and did an an absolutely terrific job.</itunes:subtitle>

The boys were consummate professionals and did an an absolutely terrific job.</itunes:summary>

Fried Mit Lipa, Simchas Bais Hashoeva 2009 – Brooklyn College Review For THECOOLJEW.com As I was stuck in traffic on the Belt Parkway on my way to Flatbush I had my music going really loud, (as usual) and totally not paying attention to my surroundings/ I randomly decided to look out the window to my right and left and I started seeing yidden everywhere. In vans, cars, SUVs, etc. I never saw so many Jews on the Belt before and I assumed they were all on their way to the Lipa/Fried Concert. Maybe that’s why there was a bit of delay in the show starting because the room wasn’t completely filled until a little after 8 PM. The lights dimmed, I had my phone and camera out for updates on my twitter.com feed, and I started to feel it all climax. Freilach Orchestra opened up with a fantastic medley composed of Lipa and Avraham Fried songs and the sound was PHENOMENAL!! Extremely clear and crisp and 100% enjoyable. The introduction was a great way to get the crowd excited for what was about to come. The band was a 9 piece band as well as vocalists from the Shira Choir. All in matching grey vests…the show was underway. The MC then announced Yosef Chaim to the stage who came out singing “Biglal Avos” and totally rocked it. He was moving and shaking and in great rhythm with the beat. He also sang a slower song- Yerushalayim, and then went into the title track of his album- Lo Lefached. I had just watched YC perform this past Monday night and he was WAY more comfortable on stage tonight than 2 nights ago. I was very impressed with his stage presence and he did a great job. I was unsure what was going to happen next, but I was pleasantly surprised. Avraham Fried came out singing Hesech Hadaas and whoa. He was moving around the stage as if he was flying. For someone who flew to Eretz Yisroel motzie yuntiv, came back the next day to fly to Montreal and then to Brooklyn he had great energy. He sounded great, voice soared through the entire theater and I was just so excited to see him. He then went into a great Yom-Tov Medley which was comprised of about 4 songs from yuntiv. Afterwards he told us his story of his travels in the last 48 hours as well as a Yom Kippur story which he then pulled out a siddur and sang a beautiful song- “Ritzei” which started off slow and then went fast. Then, I start hearing the intro to Lipa’s “Wake Up” and Fried starts to sing. The crowd is looking around the stage, the room, the ceiling to see when and where Lipa would appear. And sure enough there he was, sleeping on a big desk chair. Fried tried to wake him, but he wouldn’t budge, so he asked to audience to yell Lipa’s name. When the audience did so, Lipa got up and the crowd went wild with excitement. 1. to see him and 2. because Lipa was on stage with Avraham Fried. The two talents sang “Wake Up” and did a great job waking everyone up. Now that they are both on stage they went for a round of Fried’s Moeda Ani! Fried then let Lipa take over and Lipa came out wearing a Talis with a beautiful atara on it. He sang Shelo Asani Goy while keeping Tallis on the whole time! I love when Lipa brings out props. Its not just about the glasses. He then sang his hit song- “Hallelu” from his- “A Poshiter Yid” album, was a bit slower than the track on the CD. Lipa then got out on a more serious slow mode and sang A succalah a kleina. Avraham Fried came back and they sang Al Kein and then they went into a Carlebach-themed Medley combining- Yachad and Ki Va Moied together. They danced with each other and was a true delight to watch. There was a short break and the band came out wearing Fried Mit Lipa TShirts. I WANT ONE!! They were really nicely designed with the picture from the concert ad. The Shira CHoir then sang Ribono She’ll Olam ( From HASC 2). Next came one of my favorite parts- Lipa came out in a gold vest rocking the room up with his famous “Binyan Adei Ad”. He moved all over the stage, dancing to and fro and extremely entertaining and not to mention one of his best songs! We were also lucky to watch the bongo player have a crazy solo which Lipa danced and sang to right next to him center stage. Lipa also did a bit of rapping here which was really fun. Next up is Hashem Zchoronu from his album Likro Et Hahallel. The Shira choir were all wearing their Shtreimels and Bekeshes for it. Next was Hasem Zechurunee which Lipa dedicated to Moshe Lax.It wa a very nice slow Yiddish song then fianlly and “Yener” off A Poshiter Yid. The song was written Moti Ilowitz (LIPA calls him “the composer of the new generation!”). Fried came back out wearing matching vest to Lipa, they were joking around on stage in Yiddish. I personally didn’t understand the Yiddish jokes, but based off the laughter i can tell was funny. Fried and Lipa then sang karahod which was great! Then they sang “Keinaina Hora” with a bit of a jazzy tune to it. When he sang it he made note of how many wonderful people were in the room to which fried responded “Bein Kach – I love them all” which then went right into Frieds ‘Bein Kach’, then back to Lipa for Gelt, then Frieds “Adom Doyaig” (awesome song). Lipa turned the stage over to Fried and Fried dedicated his Aleh Hakattan to GIlad Shalit and all of Klal Yisroel. Was a beautiful emotional performance. Fried then made a huge turn around and jumped into “Matzliach” which is a pure leibedik song and the men in first few rows were dancing everywhere. Fried then sang his “Playing with Fire” which was great and its one of his better english songs but i would rather see more leibedik hebrew ones. Lipa comes back at this point and the two sing Aderaba, and Reb Zisha- in honor of Lipa’s brother. The song ended with Lipa giving Avremel a kiss on his cheek. (Aww). They spiced things up with Raboisai, Yerushalyim, Baruch Habo, (which a boy in a wheelchair was brought on stage for and he did some pretty cool wheelchair dance tricks) Then was Fried’s Levinyomim and Chazak. Everyone went off stage and it looked like the show was over but then the band came out with big foam hands, and then the Shira Choir did as well and then Fried and Lipa came out from opposite sides of stage meeting each other in the middle and pulled off a riveting performance. The audience was jumping and bopping in their seats, clapping and waving their hands to their “Father in heaven”. Now everyone thinks the show is really over. its 10:30, and we were curious to see if that was REALLY the end. Its Lipa, so I figured there HAD to be more. And indeed there was! Fried and Lipa came out singing Chalom and Nisht Gedaaget people were getting a bit antsy but enjoyed this last song in what was a true piece of art tonight. I was very happy I got to take part in this event, Lipa and Fried are EXCELLENT together and I hope they continue to do more shows as one. Huge thank you to the people who produced this awesome show, Yosef Shidler and thecooljew.com as well as all my twitter fans. – I enjoyed updating Live from the concert. Chag Sameach!! Ich Bin a Poshiter Yid. ~TcK~</itunes:subtitle>

What would Chol Hamoed be without concerts? But if you enjoy boys choirs, more often than not you are faced with a tough decision: Yeshiva Boys or Miami? Lucky me. The performers will never sound as good as they do on an album. Mistakes will always be made. The music will probably be too loud. And if you have a family of music lovers, taking them all to a concert is an expensive proposition. But the energy in the room is palpable and while purists may complain that the music isn’t as good as on an album, you can’t beat the fun and excitement of a live concert. This one was a sell out and started about twenty minutes later than the advertised start time, not too bad by Jewish standards. The opening act was a surprise guest, Shea Rubenstein who sang Modim from his debut album, Ohavti. While the orchestra was a little loud relative to Rubenstein, he did a great job warming up the crowd and getting the evening off to a leibidic start. I would have loved to hear Rubenstein sing Window in Heaven, but nobody asked my opinion. Next up, Yosef Chaim Shwekey with Emes, the opening song from his debut album and probably one of the best, as well. He was warmly received by the audience and I think that Yosef Chaim is just going to get better and better as he gets more and more experience and becomes more comfortable performing live. I was both surprised and disappointed to see him leave after just one song. The minute Dovid Stein walked on stage, he was greeted with a standing ovation by the two packs of yeshiva bochurim who were seated at the front of the auditorium. It’s very clear that he is very much at home on stage, as he waved and shook hands with some very enthusiastic fans who clearly enjoyed his rendition of Lazer’s Niggun. Stein sounded terrific and it left me wondering if perhaps one day we might hear another album from him. His debut album, Melech has a few excellent songs and never did as well as it should have. Are you listening, Dovid Stein? We want to hear more! Again, only one song, and then on to the next performer, this time Dovid Gabay, who sounded fabulous. The crowd went wild when Gabay came out and the excitement only grew as he sang Don Don, from Omar Dovid. From there, Gabay segued into a medley of songs from both of his albums, singing Sois Asis, Birchos Avicha, Yimloch, The Letter and Yerushalayim. After a touching story about an accident he recently witnessed on the highway, Gabay sang Hagomel, an upbeat song which left everyone ready for more good music. There was thunderous applause when the Yeshiva Boys Choir finally came out on stage. Maybe it’s just me getting older, but the choir seems to have gotten a lot younger. There were so many unbelievably adorable boys who looked to be no older than ten years old. If I had to guess I would estimate there were approximately twenty boys aged ten and under and maybe a dozen who were older than that. Have all the older boys retired? Or does it just make sense to start with younger boys because it will take longer till their voices change? Either way, the boys came out in black vests, holding tambourines, singing L’maan Daas. I don’t know if I noticed it on this song or not, but when they started their next song, Hillel Omer, it was obvious that in addition to the boys onstage, there was a soundtrack in the background. There was no way they got that full a sound out of that group of boys. This topic has been discussed many times before and I’m not going to get into that debate right now. Clearly all the soloists were performing live and I’m guessing they just wanted a fuller sound. The choreography on Hillel Omer was very nicely done. In the shtick department, there was a little bit of gymnastics and two inflatable guitars tossed out into the audience. The next song was Hamalach, a beautiful slow song from YBC 4 which opened with a single spotlight on one soloist sitting on the floor at the edge of the stage. All in all, there were five soloists and it was the right mood for a hartzig song like Hamalach, which was then sung again by the entire choir. All in all, very enjoyable. I was impressed with Yaakov Mordechai’s poise and confidence, trying his best despite the fact that he was clearly hoarse. While Yaakov Mordechai Gerstner is still young enough to be with the choir for a few more years, it’s obvious that YBC is going to have to start cultivating some younger boys. There were two tonight who were featured quite prominently, and working off the CD booklet (correct me if I’m wrong), it appears they were the Kogan twins, Moshe and Aron. None of this is a problem – it is the reality of working with boys, but it means that over this year, YBC should be working on cultivating a new crop of soloists for us. I look forward to hearing them! Back to the concert. The final song before the intermission was the upbeat Ata Kidashta, which featured top hats in the choreography and was very enjoyable. Yosef Chaim was the next performer to take the stage, singing Lo Lefached, the title track from his album. Most of the audience didn’t seem to know the song, but that didn’t matter. Yosef Chaim did a great job and was very well received. In just a few short months, Yosef Chaim has already proven that he isn’t just another Shwekey brother. He is a talented singer in his own right and if he plays his cards right, he could be around for a very long time. The next performer was Yaakov Mordechai Gerstner, who sang an original composition called Zaroh. The younger Gerstner is clearly very at home on stage and even attempted some dance moves. Once again, this kid oozes poise and confidence. I guess that’s what happens when you’ve been performing for almost your entire life. Dovid Stein did a beautiful job with one of my favorites, Hashem Yimloch, even though he had to sing it without Yaakov Mordechai Gerstner. Stein’s last song was Melech, the title track from his album, and he literally had people dancing in the aisles. Dovid Gabay returned with a new song that Eli Gerstner wrote for this concert called Malchuscha. His final song for the night was, what else, LeGabay, which is just as terrific now as it was when he originally released it. Once again, there was lots of dancing and there is no question that the crowd enjoyed every minute that Gabay was up there. The boys emerged again, this time in grey vests, amid loud chants of “YBC! YBC!” from the audience. They sang their hit song Shabichi, with nice choreography to keep it even more interesting. Yossi Newman took a minute to thank the staff at Brooklyn College for all their efforts which I thought it was a real Kiddush Hashem. Then it was a trip down YBC’s memory lane for Shir Hamaalos, with solos by Tani Martin, the Kogan twins (at least I think that’s who they were, someone correct me if I’m wrong, please) and Yaakov Mordechai Gerstner, followed by In A Song with solos by Tani Martin and Yaakov Mordechai Gerstner. Finally, finally, it was time for the song we were all waiting to hear – Shmoy and it they didn’t disappoint. Omar Rabbi Akiva was enjoyable as it always is, with beach balls flying all over the auditorium and there was one boy (again, how am I supposed to know who they are?) who appeared to be made out of rubber who danced, and did handstands and splits. The finale was Kol Hamispallel, and while the adult performers didn’t come back on stage some smaller people did. Yossi Newman’s daughter, who appeared to be about five, joined him on stage, and as Eli Gerstner was introduced and took the mike for the first time, his son who couldn’t be more than four, joined him as well, and got a mike of his own, to sing along as well. Will he be the new face of YBC? Only time will tell. See many photos at Shlager.net! In a final note, my most sincere apologies to Shea Rubenstein, for not managing to catch him on video!</itunes:subtitle>

It’s hard to believe that it has been just three short months since Shloime’s debut album hit the stores here in the United States. In that short amount of time, he has become a household name, as Jewish music lovers can’t seem to get enough of him. His recent trip to Eretz Yisroel proved that Israelis from all walks of life love Shloime’s music just as much as we do. This trip should have actually taken place weeks ago, but Shloime has been so busy with chasanas here in America, that it took time until a face to face meeting with Greentec, Shloime’s Israeli distributor, could finally be arranged. The trip was a huge success. While Israelis are familiar with Shloime’s music, they never got a chance to meet with Shloime, talk to him and get to know him. Until now. What a week it was! The trip was a huge success. While Israelis are familiar with Shloime’s music, they never got a chance to meet with Shloime, talk to him and get to know him. Until now. What a week it was! Shloime singing at a wedding in Israel Shloime met with virtually every Israeli radio station and music website. In his visit to the various Greentec locations, Shloime met so many people from all walks of life, who were so glad to get to meet him in person and get to know the man behind the music. Countless times, people walked into the stores where his CD was playing and bought his CD on the spot. Sefardim, Chassidim, Ashkenazim – no matter what their background, his music seems to resonate with everyone. So many people wanted more details about Shloime’s trip — what follows is a day by day, play-by-play. Enjoy! Monday, August 17th: Shloime arrives in Eretz Yisroel. You’d think after a long trip Shloime might want to relax, but that certainly didn’t happen. Shloime’s day was jam packed. It started with a meeting with Kobi Sela, who was responsible for all Shloime’s public relations in Israel. From there he moved onto an interview with Chasidi News. Shloime even did a YouTube video thanking Chasidi News for their time. Next up, a meeting with Shlomo from Greentec, Shloime’s Israeli distributor. No time for rest as Shloime traveled to Bnei Brak to sing at a wedding with Ruvi Banet’s eight piece band. Shloime’s golden voice made a beautiful simcha even more beautiful. To hear for yourself, check out the YouTube clip of Shloime singing Anavim and Sholom Aleichem at the wedding. After that, it was on to a meeting with Shua Fried, who arranged two of the songs on Shloime’s album. Shua had never seen Shloime sing live before and could not believe how Shloime managed to connect with the oilam on so many different levels. By four o’clock in the morning, it was time for Shloime to finally call it a day and get some well deserved rest. That doesn’t mean to say he got a chance to relax: a phone interview with Dos Music, followed by another with Shlager. After that it was off to Greentec’s Yerushalyim location where he met with the workers and had a short interview with hareidim.co.il. Finally, Shloime topped his day with a small kumzitz on a Tel Aviv beach with Dudi Kalish. After that it was time to rest up for Wednesday’s big concert at Binyanei Hauma. Other performers included Mendy Jeruffi, Itzik Eishel and Itzik Orlev, among many others. A few of the songs were featured live on both Israeli radio and online. More interviews today and these were huge. The first was with Arutz Sheva, the Israeli national news network, which included recording a short music video. The second was with Radio Kol Yisrael, Israel’s biggest radio station. Hard to believe that in one short week Shloime covered just about every single major Israeli media outlet. Before heading to the airport, Shloime managed to fit in supper with Avi from Greentec. Shloime Taussig with Gidi Sharon from radio Kol Yisrael Shloime with Avi from Greentec Shloime Taussig leaving Israel after a hard but fulfilling week August 24: Back to the USA at dawn. Welcome back, Shloime. We can’t wait to see what’s coming next! (via taussigmusic.com)</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>It’s hard to believe that it has been just three short months since Shloime’s debut album hit the stores here in the United States. Guest speakers included it’s founder Rabbi Rosen, Rabbi Weiss, Rabbi Eisner, a personal story from a young man from Cleveland and Rabbi Ephraim Shapiro from North Miami Beach. The entire evening was produced and coordinated by TeeM Productions (Yossi Tyberg and Gershy Moskowitz.)
We here at JMR love talking about Jewish Music, we love talking about Jewish Music singers also! These days there is so much amazing talent out there, it could be hard to navigate through the crowded field. We will now be starting a series of short profiles of upcoming singers. We’re not talking about the known singers with debut albums “coming soon”, we’re talking about the guys you probably haven’t even heard of yet. Our first look is at Eli Marcus. Eli is from Los Angeles, California, This guy has really started to make some waves. Eli is one of the talented Marcus Brothers (of 8th Day fame) and has been working hard on the wedding scene. (Including singing with his Uncle Avraham Fried at Benny Friedman’s recent wedding.) Eli’s got a great voice, I’ve heard him live a couple times and I look forward to watching his career grow and maybe even one day have a CD. There aren’t any plans as of yet for a CD but Eli is already going ...

The chupah began with beautiful melodies sung by Shloime Taussig joined by Shragi Gold and the Shira Choir. They sang Ki Elokim, a new song composed by Yossi Green for Mordechai Ben David’s upcoming album, as the chosson walked down to the chupah. That was just the beginning of the moving and inspiring chupah. Shlomo Simcha sang a hartzig Mi Adir to the tune of Od Yeishvu followed by a truly unique moment, Avraham Fried singing Anovim to the Kallah as she walked down the aisle. Shimon Craimer sang Mi Bon Siach and just before breaking the glass, Yossi Green sang Z’chor Hashem, a new song composed for Avraham Fried’s upcoming album. Musical accompaniment was provided by Freilach Orchestra: Mendy Hershkowitz (keyboard), Avrumi Schreiber (drums), Nachman Dreier, a newcomer from Israel: (guitar), Buster Hynphill (bass guitar), Shlomo Cohen (saxophone), Justin Mullens (trumpet) and, Yossi Forkosh on the trombone. An elegant string section played throughout the chupah and the meal. The meal began with Levi Yitzchok Folkowitz doing a set of moving Yossi Green songs accompanied by the Shira Choir. Next, Shloime Taussig and Sruly Werdyger sang Modim Anachnu, the title track from Taussig’s new hit CD. They segued into a new intro as the chosson and kallah were brought in and sang the first set. While the main course was served, Shloime Taussig sang Shtar Hatnoyim, followed by Dudu Fischer singing Bring Him Home, dedicated to Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. The second dance began with Srully Williger’s leibidig delivery of HaGomel. Yeedle sang Lev Echad, the title track from his latest CD and Ashrecha, followed by MBD singing an upbeat set of songs including Usid, Nodeh L’cha, Ani Maamin and Yidden. Other familiar faces at the wedding included Gideon Levin, Yisroel Lamm, Sheya Mendlowitz, Mendy Werdyger, Shelly Lang, Chazzan Helfgott, Chanoch Vinderbaum and Beri Weber. All this was coordinated by none other than Yossi Tyberg and Gershy Moskowitz of TeeM productions who kept everything running smoothly. We here at Jewish Music Report would like to take the opportunity to wish a hearty mazel tov to both the Green and Ehrenpreis families on this beautiful simcha. May they be zoche to build a bayis neeman b’yisroel.
Presenting the first of STEProduction’s albums: THERE’S A PLACE IN MY MIND, songs that penetrate the depths of the Neshama, starring Avrumi Flam, who has magnificently pulled together this tremendous production. Although these songs have been very popular for many years, they were never released to the public before. This new release, sung by Avrumi Flam along with with Yehuda! and Dov Levine, is now available to the entire listening population. The need for Jewish music with themes that are educational, build character and strengthen yiras shomayim is crucial. We look forward to sharing over 35 years of songs written by Mrs. Dina Storch with the special engineers who have been part of it and those who are new to it. This CD will be available from MostlyMusic.com very soon.

Aderet Music has announced that they will be releasing the long awaited followup to the successful “Od Yosef Chai” CD of restored performances by undoubtedly the most famous Chazzan of all time, Reb Yossele Rosenblatt. Like “Od Yosef Chai” the followup album is a compilation of painstakingly professionally restored original hits from the benchmark by which all other Chazzanim have been measured for nearly a century.
Video: Beyond the Music with ABD

Not long ago, ABD’s debut album took the Jewish world by storm. Seeming to sprout out of thin air, the group surprised us all with an album that was inspired, innovative and refreshingly relaxed. In addition, many of us were intrigued by the values they displayed in the donating of all proceeds from their album to Yeshivas Nefesh Dovid, an amazing organization struggling to keep their doors open as the only Yeshiva in he world for deaf and hard of hearing children. Who is ABD? Where did they come from and what makes them tick? Join JMR’s Mendel “the Sheichet” in getting to know the talented trio up close and personal. Please also take a moment to visit Yeshivas Nefesh Dovid to discover the amazing work they do at www.nefeshdovid.com and/or see the video below.

Brand New CD From Shlomo Katz!

The simple yet powerful production behind Shlomo Katz’s latest solo album has been an intense and exciting project with one intent: to be able to create a home in our hearts, in order to carry the message of the title of this album ‘Malei Olam’, a World filled with G-dliness. Recorded in Yerushalayim, Malei Olam features some of today’s most talented artists in the Israeli circuit. Yonatan Razel, Avi Songolda, and Lazer Lloyd are just a few of whom you will meet while listening to these tracks. There is also a special guest appearance by Avshalom Katz, Shlomo’s father who joins in for a duet on the title track ‘Malei Olam’. It has been three years since Shlomo’s last successful release ‘Vehakohanim’, and two years since releasing ‘Keshoshana’ together with Chaim Dovid and Ahron Razel. Malei Olam features nine originals, as well as an unrecorded masterpiece of an early 1960’s gem from Reb Shlomo Carlebach, Katz’s spiritual mentor. So sit back, with your heart and mind as one, and let...
