O’Connell’s stand alone books, the most recent of which is Bone by Bone, are also incredible. I have already purchased Half Broke Horses: A True-Life Novel written and read by Jeanette Walls. I was completely glued to The Glass Castle, Walls’s memoir, when I read it last year. I am really looking forward to reading her version of her grandmother’s story… told in the first person. I’m saving it for a day when I can read uninterrupted. Anne Rice, known for her vampire novels, is on the list for Angel Time: The Songs of the Seraphim, narrated by Paul Michael. This intriguing novel is a thriller… with angels and assassins. I admit, I’m quite curious about this one. Another new entry is Dracula the Un-Dead by Dacre Stoker and Ian Holt and read by Simon Prebble. Based on Bram Stoker’s notes, his great-grandnephew has created a new novel featuring Van Helsing’s protégé, Dr. Jack Seward. My take? I have read one or two of Howard’s novels in the past, so am interested in taking a listen to this one. A soldier is home on holiday leave and is helping his father, a county sheriff, check on a neighbor who has not been in touch… and an ice storm is looming. I’m hooked. Under the Dome: A Novel by Stephen King and read by Raul Esparza.At 1,088 pages, this is one hefty novel. I can’t seem to find the length of the audio recordings, though it is available unabridged. In King’s latest offering, a small town in Maine suddenly finds itself sealed off by a large, invisible dome-like force field. As the citizens attempt to find out why and how this has happened, they must also deal with the fact that that time, and air, is running out. This is a pretty complex project. King has even masterminded an intricate 3D cover for the book jacket. My plan? Oh, I’m reading it, alright. I am currently downloading “Infected”, with its freaky triangle shaped eye on the cover… iTunes U: Some colleges post audiobook readings of literary course materials from the Bronte sisters to Mark Twain. The literature area of iTunes U also has interesting audio podcast literary discussions. You don’t have to be a student to access some very fascinating content. All-in-all, my preference is the regular audiobook. They are professionally recorded renderings provided to iTunes by Audible. The convenience afforded by a singular download with superior quality and huge selection appeals to me. To find information on everything from Krumping (a style of dancing) to Joan of Arc condensed into less than 8 minutes seems like a trivia-buff’s idea of Heaven. iMindsJNR titles, offered individually or bundled, cover similarly diverse topics. The Cold War, The Human Body, and Roman Myths are all offered. Most of the titles in the JNR series seem directed towards educational supplementation. History, science, and the arts are highlighted and the topics all appear to be those covered in my children’s elementary curriculums. I have to wonder if these small snippets of knowledge are popular. I can see adults, especially those who are looking for very brief interludes or to increase knowledge of a particular subject.
