Revelation Bible Study Session 9

This week we covered Revelation 17 and 18. These may be two of the most challenging chapters in Revelation for me personally, as a Christian living in North America, and this teaching reflects that. What we have is a picture of Babylon, painted in words by John of Patmos, and the picture should be one that challenges us to define our ultimate allegiance. Here is a sheet that I handed out that contrasts the two cities of Babylon and New Jerusalem (and is covered in lecture). The quote from the Timothy Keller book comes from his newest book, “Counterfeit Gods,” which I am linking below. So, the closing questions for us are, what does it mean for us as Christians today to “come out of Babylon?” and what does it mean for us to have Christ as our point of reference for life? I think these are the very questions John of Patmos would have us ask.
This is the eighth sermon in our series on Revelation, which is called, “Apocalypse: John’s Visions, Our Decisions.” This sermon was on 19:6-9, and it was a part of a combined worship service that followed a wedding theme. During this worship time we focused on the wedding of the Lamb and the church, and part of our worship time involved welcoming in 2 new members. The main idea found in the sermon is the grace of God found in Jesus Christ. We don’t deserve to be dressed in fine white linen, as the bride, but because of Jesus’ sacrifice for us we are offered this as a gift of grace.
Revelation Bible Study session 8

This week we covered Revelation 15 and 16. This is the cycle that includes the bowl judgments, so those of you in the class should have filled out your “seals, trumpets, bowls” sheets. Here is a sheet that I handed out that has much of the information on the plagues – it will be helpful to look over as you listen to the lecture. The theme that I really hit on this week in lecture was that there are events or actions that are simultaneously works of judgment and salvation. The event at the Red Sea with Egypt and Israel is an example. The same event that brought judgment is the event that was for Israel’s salvation. As Christians we see this most clearly in Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. We sang Christmas songs in order to get in the proper mood to consider what John had for us in this vision about the birth of the Messiah amidst a cosmic battle. As you see the Christmas story differently, then perhaps it can help you see your life differently. John’s visions push us in our decisions to act faithfully with Christ as Lord.
Revelation Bible Study: Session 6

This week we covered Revelation 11 and 12, spending most of the time on chapter 11. The audio gets a bit quiet through part of the recording here (not sure why), but it picks back up again, so just stay with it. At this point we have moved through over half of the book, and my hope is that it is feeling a bit more familiar, if not a bit less strange. I also hope that you are starting to see the book as a collection of visions and then thinking through exactly what that means. I continue to press the point that this must have meant something to those who first read it – and I think when we interpret the book on those terms it can really come to life for us today.

Podcast: Apocalypse part 5 – Witnesses

This is the fifth sermon in our series on Revelation, which is called, “Apocalypse: John’s Visions, Our Decisions.” This sermon was on 11:1-13, and it focused on the vision of the two witnesses found there. I picked up where we left off, in a sense, last week. If we have those questions of “how long?” and place our faith in the return of Christ and his Lordship, then what do we do about now? Does our faithfulness matter today? What is God doing in and through his people today? The Old Testament references are from Isaiah 6:13 and Amos 5:3 as well as 1 Kings 19:18. The other New Testament reading we had Sunday was from 2 Peter 3:8 and following. If you are curious and want to learn more about the symbolism behind the two witnesses, feel free to join us for the Revelation Bible study on Wednesdays at either 1:00 or 6:30.

More Revelation Bible study! Here is the lecture from chapters 8, 9, and 10. This begins with examining the 7th seal and then the first 6 trumpet judgments. There was a handout that we used to visualize what was happening in the seals and trumpet judgments – and using this handout I observed some patterns. Here it is. Also, at the end we had a brief discussion on what it would mean for these judgments to suggest that we are a part of a new Exodus. Hopefully you are seeing some of the connections between the exodus and Revelation.

Here’s some more from our Revelation Bible study. I’ve included most of the audio from the lecture portion of the night, which was quite a bit. We covered chapters 6 and 7, which means for you who have the worksheets you need to be filling out the worksheet with the seals (from “Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls). As we get into the section that deals increasingly with judgment, this quote from Craig Koester will be helpful (this is covered in lecture, but I wanted to write it out for you): “The martyrs suffered not because they were sinners but because they were faithful. One rightly asks: Does God care? Does genuine love turn a blind eye while the wicked shed the blood of the innocent? Or is mercy another name for indifference?” Koester p.87 When we get into chapter 7 and consider the 144,000 that are sealed, this sheet may be helpful. If you have any thoughts or comments from the class, feel free to leave them in the comments here.

In this session we covered Chapters 4 and 5 of Revelation, but along with that we also had to read Isaiah 6, Ezekiel 1, and Exodus 12. Part of the first part of the class we looked at the elements of Isaiah 6 and Ezekiel 1 that were found in Revelation 4.
This is the second sermon in our series on Revelation, which is called, “Apocalypse: John’s Visions, Our Decisions.” This sermon was from 2:1-7, but really dealt with chapters 2 and 3, the letters to the 7 churches. How does scripture portray the church? In Revelation we find messages of comfort and conviction. That leaves us to ask ourselves, what idols do I have and where have I been faithful? We had another visual during worship – when it was done it looked like this.

I’m going to post some things online, as much as I can, for people to follow along with the Revelation Bible study – especially if you missed a day. This post will be on session two, but it will have stuff in it that will get you caught up for the first two weeks. Or at least kind of caught up. First, there is some reading to do. I’ve written an introduction to the book and put it online as a pdf (you’ll need adobe reader). This will give you some background in your reading the book of Revelation. The second document is a piece I wrote on the rapture titled, “Rethinking the Rapture” and it addresses the issue of teachings on the rapture, which we have to consider as we move into Revelation. Finally, here is the answer sheet to the church worksheet we filled out as we went through chapters 2 and 3. The last thing I’ll post is the audio to the lecture where I covered the church worksheet linked above. So, to get the full affect you&#82...

This is the first sermon in our series on Revelation, which is called, “Apocalypse: John’s Visions, Our Decisions.” We begin with a sermon on Revelation 22:1-7. In this message we look at four trees found in scripture – and in doing so connect Revelation with the rest of scripture. I used visuals throughout the sermon, so just listening to the message won’t give you the same effect. But, here is what the front of the church looked like at the end of moving things around during the message. Subscribe to the Pulpiteer via itunes. Subscribe to the Pulpiteer via podcast alley.
Podcast: Reading the Bible

This sermon addresses reading scripture. We first go over 3 guidelines for reading scripture: 1. read it in context 2. ask what the text is saying 3. ask how it points to Jesus. After that the application questions we used are: 1. where are you in God’s story 2. how does this focus you on Jesus. As you may notice, the whole thing ends up being focused on listening to the text and on Jesus. I then used those guidelines to look at the first part of Jeremiah 29. My hope was that it would be an empowering sermon for people as we examined the scripture together.

This week we had a combined worship service with all three of our worship services meeting together in order to celebrate Pentecost, launch our new mission statement and church structure and to baptize 4 people. The new mission statement is: Carson City UMC - disciples of Jesus Christ who are loved by God, loving God, loving others, and serving the world. The goal is to get everyone involved in each stage of the discipleship process. The scripture we used this week was the Pentecost story found in Acts 2.
Resurrection Rebels part 3: Abide

This is the third in the rebels of the resurrection series - this is last Sunday’s sermon - from John 15:1-11. This is the metaphor of Jesus as the vine and his disciples as the branches. I spend a bit of time examining pruning and then focus on our main task: to abide in Christ and to trust God. If we do these things then we will bear spiritual fruit. There is an image I used to help describe these things and it is found here.
This is the first in the sermon series “Resurrection Rebels.” In this series I am going to try to explore what it means to be a rebel of the resurrection. This first sermon is on faith, but more specifically how a vision of faith in the resurrected Christ should change our ideas of what is possible and it should also encourage us that what we do in faith in Christ in this life won’t be wasted. Rebels of the resurrection should be more than willing to take on causes that appear to be hopeless if they are causes that are in line with the Kingdom of God. If you saw the resurrected Christ, as the disciples did in this scripture (John 20:19-31), how would that change your idea of what you thought was possible? At the end of the sermon I talk a little about Compassion International. They are an awesome ministry if you haven’t partnered with them. I should also mention that I share a couple of testimonies of God’s work in the beginning of the message, a...

Here is the Easter Sunday sermon. I read the resurrection account from John 20, but the message is based more upon the resurrection account found in Mark 16 (which was read earlier). There are a couple more parts of scripture that I pull from heavily for the theology of the message and they are 1 Corinthians 15 and Revelation 21. We had our first Sunday morning worship back in the sanctuary and celebrated Easter that way and it was awesome. Easter should make rebels of us all.
This is the Palm Sunday message and it’s a meditation that I wrote a bit ago that reflects on the crucifixion and the meaning of the cross. While I read from Isaiah 53 before the message, the meditation encompasses much of scripture, including Genesis 1-3 and the Passion narratives found in the Gospel. I am continually challenged and inspired by God’s redeeming work.

This is the fourth sermon in the Lenten series reNEW, and in it we are called to have a new focus. The New Testament reading is from John 3:14-21 - which, by the way, includes the well known John 3:16. This text refers to an Old Testament story found in Numbers 21:4-9 where Moses makes a bronze snake on a pole that saves the Israelites in the wilderness. Jesus draws a comparison - just as the serpent was lifted up, so must the Son of Man be lifted up. This comparison fills out what is meant by the “whoever would be lieve in him,” found in John 3:16. The sermon was preceeded by an awesome dramatic presentation of the Numbers reading by the Junior High Youth group, who ensured that the congregation would remember that particular story for a while.
This is the third sermon in our Lenten Series titled: reNEW. This sermon is from 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 and it is about a new wisdom - which is in fact the foolishness of the cross. In this sermon I try to lay out what Paul is stating in the scripture - that the cross is foolishness and it is weakness, but the foolishness of God is wiser than the world’s wisdom. How do we view wisdom and power through the cross. I should mention that the secondary reading - that you don’t hear - is from Exodus 20, which is the Ten Commandments. I didn’t say this during the sermon, but isn’t it curious that God gives commandments as opposed to saying, “Just do what you think is right.” Anyway, I found this passage in 1 Corinthians to be very challenging, in part because I would tend to buy into the slick presentation and sale of the Gospel, and I want to give “wisdom” on how to fix things. Preaching the straight message of the cross, without self ...

This is the second sermon in our Lenten Series titled: reNEW. This sermon focuses on the story of Abraham and Sarah getting their new names as found in Genesis 17:1-8, 15-16. As I go through the passage, the message is in some ways very simple. We are offered renewal, just as Abraham was, only ours is in the New Covenant set forth by Jesus Christ. As a response to the message this week people took slips of paper on which they had written down negative names and they laid them at the foot of the cross and picked up a large key chain that had “My Child” written on it. <itunes:subtitle>This is the second sermon in our Lenten Series titled: reNEW.
This is the first sermon in the Lenten series I’ve entitled “reNEW” which focuses on the renewal that God’s grace can bring in us during the season of Lent. This week’s sermon is on 1 Peter 3:18-22, and you’ll probably want to read it. It’s a very strange passage that is difficult to follow, and people interpret it many different ways. During the sermon I was not able to go into much depth as to why I chose the interpretive moves that I did, but there was reason for each based on study of the Greek words used, the overall themes of 1 Peter, and consistency with Biblical theology. I think the point remains, however, whatever interpretations you make within this section, that Christ is held up as our example, and that something special is offered to us in baptism. Also, life in the Spirit is a clear teaching in the New Testament, Galatians 5 is a prime example of this. So the question stands for all of us, “Where do we need to die ...

This week’s sermon is in between two series. We finished our discipleship series and next week we are launching into Lent with a series called “reNEW.” This time in the Protestant Christian Calendar is traditionally the Sunday when we remember the Transfiguration of Jesus. This year’s lectionary reading comes from Mark 9:2-9. The secondary reading that we heard was 2 Corinthians 4:3-6, “And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” I’ll link the NT Wrigh...

If you’re looking for something fairly profound to read I’d recommend this book. Anyway, I have come to love the story of the Transfiguration for reasons you’ll hear in the sermon. At the end of the day, I think Bev had it right all along - there’s something special going on with Jesus.
Podcast: Disciples part four - Running the race

Discipleship This is the fourth in the series on discipleship. We continue with 1 Corinthians 9 and this week we finish out the last three verses of the chapter with Paul’s analogy between our lives of faith and running a race. I spent some time on the spiritual discipline of prayer and it is my hope that as we get closer to the season of Lent we can, as a community, be a people of prayer so that God can shape us. Thanks to those of you who spread the word about the sermons, I appreciate your support. If you could continue to do that, especially to those in our church community, then this podcast will serve its purpose best. Also, if any of you listen via itunes or another podcast catcher I’d appreciate any reviews you could leave there. Subscribe to the Pulpiteer via itunes.
Podcast: Disciples part three - We are an outreach people

Discipleship This is the third sermon in the series on discipleship and it comes from 1 Corinthians 9:16-23. In this sermon I really examine the verse, “I have become all things to all people so that by all means I may save some.” I give a little bit of background on where we are culturally in the US as a post-Christian nation. I hope we can understand that our task today as the church is a missionary task. We have to do work in a culture that is not only different, but increasingly hostile to the Church. The research I mention is from a presentation by David Kinnamon in regards to his book unChristian - linked here. In this context, Paul’s challenge that he was all things to all people in order to save some, should be a word that forces us to consider what is essential and what is cultural. By the way, the VH-1 show I referenced is Sober House. Subscribe to the Pulpiteer via itunes. Subscribe to the Pulpiteer via podcast alley. Subscribe to the Pulpiteer via Odeo.

Discipleship This is the second sermon of four in a series on discipleship. We are moving forward with some things we’ve done with the Simple Church, so now we are examining discipleship on Sunday and having a Bible study mid-week on discipleship and our process. The Scripture is 1 Corinthians 8 and I was very challenged and moved by this scripture this week. During the sermon I give a bit of background so that you can really hear what the scripture is saying. I’m going to link to a couple of graphics that I referenced during the sermon. The first is the examination true knowledge. The second is the closer examination of verse 11.

This is the fourth sermon in the Advent series, “Help is Coming.” This week’s Gospel reading is from Luke 1:26-38, and it’s the announcement from Gabriel to Mary that she’ll be pregnant. The Old Testament scripture I mention is from 2 Samuel 7, Genesis 12, and Genesis 3. I mentioned some thoughts from the church fathers on Eve and here is one quote: Saint Irenaeus wrote this between 180-199 A.D.: “Consequently, then, Mary the Virgin is found to be obedient, saying: “Behold, O Lord, your handmaid; be it done to me according to your word.” Eve, however, was disobedient; and when yet a virgin, she did not obey…. having become disobedient, was made the cause of death for herself and for the whole human race; so also Mary, betrothed to a man but nevertheless still a virgin, being obedient, was made the cause of salvation for herself and for the whole human race….
Podcast: Advent week 2

This is the second in our Advent series: “Help is Coming.” The beginning of the scripture reading was cut off on the audio, so read 2 Peter 3:8-15a. The scripture is about the coming of the Lord and the dissolving of the heavens in fire. There is a key question in the midst of the section - “What sort of person should you be?” Part of preparing our hearts for the Lord and preparing them for Christmas involves asking these types of questions and basing our lives on Christ’s Lordship.
