All my websites focus on the same niche, and while in the past I spent some time buying and selling websites in different niches, now I focus on maintaining authority in one marketplace. Today I’m giving you part one of an interview with a man who does the opposite of me. His specialty is creating profitable websites in various niches. In fact, he owns 90 different websites all making money. His name is Adam Short, and in this call you will hear Adam explain exactly how he can build sites and make money from them despite targeting so many different topics. This Is Powerful Information I had to break this call down into two parts because Adam and I ended up speaking for an hour and twenty minutes. Today I’m giving you part one of an interview with a man who does the opposite of me. His specialty is creating profitable websites in various niches. In fact, he owns 90 different websites all making money. You could spend the entire week in just the museum of natural history or Soho of any of the cool little villages and hotspots. It’s definitely a city I recommend you visit if you get the chance. I’d like to live there some day myself for a few months in a row to really experience what being a New Yorker is like. In case you are curious, we rented an apartment in the Upper West side for a week, which cost a total of $1755 USD, definitely the most expensive apartment I’ve rented so far on my travels, but for New York I wanted to splurge a little. It turned out to be in a great location, although for the price I was disappointed with the interior and the Internet wasn’t too reliable either. Since we were rarely home the apartment’s shortcomings didn’t impact the trip too much, but as I’ve learned on my travels you can never be certain what you are going to get for your money. Sometimes I’ve been pleasantly surprised (like Vancouver), other times you’re not blown away (like New York). I’m certainly discovering a lot about how to locate short term rentals as I travel around the world this year. I hope you have enjoyed the travel videos I post to this blog. His blog, CarAdvice.com.au is one of the top blogs in all of Australia in any category and competes right along with some of the biggest media companies in the world for the car enthusiast market in the land down under. His blog gets phenomenal traffic, brings in hundreds of thousands of dollars in advertising revenue each year and Alborz has traveled to Europe to drive some of the most prestigious sports cars ever created. His blog became a true business and Alborz has to be one of the luckiest people in the world, living out a passion every single day and earning big money along the way. What’s really great about this story though, is that Alborz started out just like you and me. He wasn’t sure what topic to write about, so he created three blogs at once to see which one would stick. The car blog got the traffic so he dropped the other two and slowly built up his site off the back of his own content. I convinced Alborz to test AdSense on his blog after much pestering and he immediately made around $10 per day. Over the next few months his income grew, AdSense reached about $100 a day and he started branching out and testing other forms of advertising. I don’t know how much his blog generates today, but 12 months ago it was making $30,000 a month, so I expect the site generates at least half a million dollars a year now. I do know the site was professionally audited (necessary when you take on capital investors) and valued at 5 million dollars! Did I mention during this entire time he was still working a full time job? It wasn’t until Alborz sold some of his blog to investors and his blog became a real serious business that he finally left his job to focus 100% on growing his project. Since then Alborz and CarAdvice have gone from strength to strength. He’s knocked back a million dollar buy-out (actually I think he knocked back a couple of offers), he’s had more people join his team contributing articles and he recently told me about a deal just made with Yahoo! to supply car related content to their network in Australia. There’s also new branches of the blog opening up in other countries. It’s truly become a massive enterprise, which all started as an after-hours experiment to see if he could build a popular blog. There’s A Lot To Learn From This Interview The interview is very practical, and if you pay close attention you will learn a lot about the specific techniques Alborz implemented early on to grow his traffic. You will also hear the story of how he brought on investors to back his blog and help grow it to the next level. Here’s some of the most important points to take away from the podcast - You can start a blog and choose top level categories in very competitive markets, if you niche it down based on geographical location. In other words, you can start a car blog and target just your country to differentiate it. There’s big bucks to be made as the leading blog in just one country for mainstream subjects. When you don’t know what topic to blog about, pick what you think might work and just put something out there and see what happens. You can build a significant blog based only on part time labor, if you are dedicated and get things done during the time you have available to work on the project. Sometimes, being controversial can do wonderful things for your traffic. Strong opinions will always stick out and grab attention. Search engine traffic is very powerful if you just do a few things right, like blog post titles in Alborz’s case. Think BIG with your blog, it doesn’t have to be just a small publication - consider taking things to the next level with the help of financial investors. This is one of the most inspiring blog case studies I know of. I don’t expect everyone to do as well as Alborz, but it’s VERY realistic for you to enjoy even just 10% of Alborz’s success with your blog and make a good living as a result, if you can just commit yourself to the goal for long enough to give yourself a chance of success. My only disappointment was that Frank Kern was not making the trip down to Vegas as I’d really like to meet my fellow long haired Internet marketer. The event started at 1pm and included an afternoon in a Skyloft, which is an uber-expensive ($1,000 a night) apartment style hotel room in the MGM Grand hotel on the Vegas Strip and concluded with dinner at Craftsteak, a fancy steak restaurant located inside the hotel. I left my hotel room and went down to the VIP area where they have special private elevators to access the Skylofts and immediately bumped into Rich Schefren who was chatting to Colette Marshall, whom I had never met. Rich introduced me and we chatted briefly until Michael Cheney showed up. By then it was nearly 1pm so we headed upstairs to the Skyloft. Jeff and Jon Walker greeted us at the door and gave us a tour around the Skyloft before we joined the main crowd that had already arrived. The lights and sounds and visual stimulation makes the place feel very surreal, like you have entered into a movie that features an entirely new theme every 100 meters or so. There a few interesting observations to make when it came to marketing techniques that I took away and can relate to you now. Obviously a place as commercial as this has to be able to market themselves. Here’s some thoughts - Vegas offers comparatively cheap hotel rates. There’s no many products that offer as good a profit margin as gambling, so the hotels are quite happy to let people stay cheap. As I pointed out in the video, there’s evidence of social proof and other forms of proof all over Vegas. One casino had a “wall of winners” showing photos of all the normal everyday people who had struck it rich showing off their big checks. Some had even become new millionaires. This is a classic technique that creates excitement and most importantly - hope. The whole idea of gambling is to purchase just a little potential for winning big with every bet. It’s this hope that creates the excitement that keeps people gambling away more money, despite fully understanding how bad the odds are in most situations. The whole marketing image Vegas has developed is one of decadence and uninhibited pleasures. The psychology means people who come to Vegas leave their usual self-imposed restrictions at home. It’s okay to eat bad, drink lots, gamble and sleep with strangers in Vegas because that’s what people do. This frame helps the businesses benefit financially since money is spent a lot more frivolously than usual.
