Health Check this week reports from South Africa on a major new study - the world's biggest - which aims to find out exactly how many young people are looking after others and what effect it's having on them.

For years, South Africa's fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic was blighted by top-level denials that the virus did indeed cause AIDS. But now the days of AIDS denialism are over and, just weeks before South Africans go to the polls, Claudia Hammond reports from Cape Town about the health challenges facing the new administration. From the township of Khayelitsha, she talks to health workers struggling to cope with the huge numbers of HIV positive people needing anti-retrovirals. And she hears why South Africa has the highest rate of tuberculosis in the world.

After President Obama lifts the so-called global gag – the ban on funding for family planning organisations who give information about abortion – we ask what impact this will have on world health. The robot carrier pigeons ferrying urgent medical samples around South Africa. New research which suggests that schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder might be more similar than we think. The robot carrier pigeons ferrying urgent medical samples around South Africa. New research which suggests that schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder might be more similar than we think.
A new treatment for severe depression - using magnets...which could replace electro convulsive therapy or ECT. The Dutch trial of so-called friendly bacteria that ended in fifteen deaths...weâ??ll be asking what went wrong. Reassurance for the millions of women who find the pain of childbirth is too much â?¦..why epidurals are safer than we used to think. And are south Asians really doomed to heart failure if they have a certain gene?

Following French cardiologist Dr Olivier Ameisen's account of how he cured his alchohol addiction using a prescribed muscle relaxant, Health Check talks to David Nutt, Professor of Neuropsychopharmacology, about what this drug might be doing to reduce the craving for booze. This week a vaccine for malaria came a step closer with the results of trials of two vaccines. Dr Kevin Marsh, the Director of the Kenya Medical Research Institute Wellcome Research Programme spoke to Health Check about how well they seem to be working and the hopes for eradicating this disease. In India, hundreds of people who have been working in glass factories with the mineral silica are dying from a disease called silicosis. Whole families have been lost to this condition which ravages the lungs and causes victims' bodies to shrink before they die. Health Check reporter Nividita Pathak spoke to sufferers and doctors campaigning to improve conditions and bring this terrible, incurable disease to light.
