We’re calling this one the swimming cow episode. Apple gets into it with Palm and Google this week. Palm re-enables syncing with the Pre and iTunes despite Apple’s blocks. Apple (and maybe AT&T block the Google Voice application from the app store possibly prompting a board member to resign. BusyCal is released in beta and puts iCal to shame. NetNewsWire causes all kinds of drama. And, oh yes, there are swimming cows. Note: apologies for Katie’s audio quality, somehow we didn’t catch that the audio input was set to the Mac’s external Mic rather than the podcasting mic. Doesn’t sound too bad considering... :) Download Shownotes

This weekend Katie embarked on an experiment to hack her Apple TV to install Boxee. The primary purpose of this project was to make the Apple TV a more inclusive home media center and specifically to gain access to content on Hulu.com. When reaching the process Katie was surprised that she couldn’t find many all inclusive videos to show the process and decided it would be a good opportunity for a video podcast. Remember that hacking your Apple TV with Boxee or any other third party software is not supported by Apple. As such, you may void your warranty and cause damage to your Apple TV. Also be cautious of future updates as it may break Boxee. Expect more video content coming in the weeks after Macworld. Note From Katie: This is my first video podcast so I apologize in advance if it’s a little rough around the edges. I expect the quality and all will improve in subsequent podcasts. As such, I would appreciate any feedback you might have as to the quality, file size, or a...

There’s lots going on in the next few weeks so here are a few things we wanted everyone to be aware of: The MacCore RSS Feed Changes: As announced a few months back, we have been making some behind the scenes maintenance tweaks to our RSS feeds. The purpose of this was to consolidate all of our information into one RSS feed. We have also streamlined our podcast production by creating only one MP3 version of our show. We’ve also been making a few minor updates to our website. These are primarily back-end changes but it is possible that when we “flip the switch” to make all these changes live it may cause iTunes and your RSS readers to show all of our content as new again. The purpose of this was to consolidate all of our information into one RSS feed. We have also streamlined our podcast production by creating only one MP3 version of our show. We’ve also been making a few minor updates to our website. If you have iTunes set to download all new podcast episodes it may cause all our episodes to queue up to be re-downloaded. To prevent this, you may wish to Temporarily change your iTunes podcast settings to only download the most recent episode. You can do this by clicking on our Podcast in your iTunes library, click Settings, and choose the drop down menu that says “When new episodes are available: Download most recent one.” However, I strongly recommend that you change this setting back to “download all” the first week in January because we will be rapidly releasing special edition Macworld content that you won’t want to miss. This switch will happen on December 31, 2008. We appreciate your patience for any inconvenience this may case. Macworld Information: As announced last week, Katie will be attending Macworld. She’ll be flying in on Tuesday, January 6th and leaving fairly early on Thursday, January 8th. Unfortunately, it’s a quick trip but we have a lot planned for those two days. Katie will be roaming the show floor most of the day Tuesday and Wednesday so if you see her please feel free to say hello. She’ll be shooting video from the show floor and taking a look at various products and exhibits. Keep your eye on our feed the weeks following Macworld as we’ll be posting the video content as quickly as it can be edited. There will also be a post-Macworld show and recap. Below are a few specific events where you can find Katie. Mac Roundtable Live: Wednesday, January 7th, 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. The Mac Roundtable Gang has been invited to do a podcast live from the show floor on Wednesday, January 7th from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. at the Macworld Learning Center. Macworld Learning Center is booth # 3036 located in the North Hall. If you’re at Macworld, I hope you’ll come be a part of the audience and perhaps we’ll have an opportunity for questions. For more information keep an eye on the Macworld website. Birds of a Feather Podcaster Meetup: Wednesday, January 7th, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Join Adam Christianson, host of the Maccast, along with the hosts and visionaries behind many of today's top Mac podcasts for a casual discussion of all things podcasting. <itunes:summary>There’s lots going on in the next few weeks so here are a few things we wanted everyone to be aware of: The MacCore RSS Feed Changes: As announced a few months back, we have been making some behind the scenes maintenance tweaks to our RSS feeds. (Running Time: 1:12:59) The audio quality of this podcast can vary at times due to Corey’s cell phone and our various audio interviews but we think the information is worth a listen and hope you’ll forgive the audio issues.

We talk a lot about cell phones in this podcast, particularly poor signal strength which both Katie and Corey struggle with. The duo installed a cell phone range extender from wi-ex and talk about the process and their results. Cell phones signal may be an issue for many people as the NPD group survey shows that switchers are coming to AT&T specifically for the iPhone, Apple eases the activation with an online process, and AppStore reviews are finally under control. We also talk about movies on the Mac, Netflix streaming, an Apple TV update and a TiVo upgrade project. Lastly we answer a listeners question about setting up a general blog page and discuss general thoughts and share our experiences on setting up blogs and podcasts.

Katie and Corey talk about how they use their iPods and the future of iPods in the wake of Apple’s “Let’s Rock” announcements, car integration, and iPod and iPhone accessories. We also talk about our experiences with the 2.1 software update for the iPhone, what’s fixed, what’s not, and what we wish we would see in the future. Corey tells the tale of how his 17” MacBook Pro took on his van and lived to tell the tale. Apple sends up some major software updates with 10.5.5. Listener Tyler is looking for help running an insurance business on the Mac. Judy wants to learn how to sync her Entourage Address Book with her Comcast webmail and Katie goes off on a mini-rant against ISP based email service providers. We also talk more about managing and syncing calendars. (Running Time 00:41:55) Download/Play MP3 Show Notes

Corey and Katie sat down with Steve Stanger of The Mac Attack and devoted a special podcast to the topic of becoming Apple Certified.
The MacCore 064

iPhone 2.0.1 is out and much to Katie and Corey’s joy squashes quite a few iPhone bugs, but these bug fixes may come at the cost of not being able to unlock your phone in the future. Lots of happenings, some good, and some bad in the App Store. We talk about a few of our favorite new Apps, talk about the Null River debacle and iPhone tethering, and discuss just how involved Apple should be in policing the App store. The MobileMe mess is starting to clean itself up, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some bitter feelings. Steve has admitted that the MobileMe mess had problems, but is all forgiven? Katie explains stories of Macs being discriminated against by state Bars and Corey tells us about his plans to do a special Apple Certification episode by popular demand. (Running Time 00:40:01) Download/Play MP3 Show Notes

The MacCore 063

Katie and Corey talk all the Apple launches this past week. Katie shares her experiences while waiting to pick up her 3G iPhone, Corey shares his thoughts about why he's not planning on buying one just yet. The gang both talk about the changes to the 2.0 Software and their favorite iPhone Apps. We also discuss the less than stellar rollout of MobileMe and why we are and are not using it. Christopher, our AudioEngine W1 winner chimes in with a review, we get a question from Australia about Time Capsule, when is the best time to buy an iPod touch and how do you keep iCal and Outlook in sync. (Running Time 01:26:06) Download/Play MP3 Show Notes Note: Some listeners reported that while listening to this podcast through headphones the audio channels were out of balance. Somehow one track was recorded in stereo and the other in mono. The issue has been corrected. If you had this problem, please re-download the podcast. Sorry for the inconvenience.
