Presets – Lightroom 3 Grain

A couple of weeks ago, Adobe released a beta version of Lightroom 3. Among the new features is a grain effect that people have been asking for to simulate film grain. So I figured what better candidate for a new preset then some grain effects. They're pretty straightforward and there's 3 versions of the effect from Light, to Medium to Heavy. I purposely left off any black and white, lomo, or cross-process settings (which is the type of photo we see this effect being added to) because I figure you'll apply those settings to your photo first and then add some grain at the end. Also, before you have a look at them though, you should realize two things: 1) The grain effect really needs to be zoomed into 100% to see best. You can see it at lower zoom levels but don't make any judgment calls on it until you see it at 100%. 2) On a personal note, I'm actually not that into the "grain" look. But hey, I totally get that A LOT of people really like this effect. Its been on the hot list of requests for quite some time now. So enjoy and please leave a comment to let me know what you think. Thanks! • Click here to see a sample of the preset. • Click here to download Matt's Grain Presets • To Install the Presets just unzip them to your desktop. In a nutshell, the "pros" are that I think the technology is way cool. This can seriously change things for a lot of photographers out there who want to show off their photos right away or in any situation where being first is key. Plus, for families its just cool and fun. "Cons" - there's no CF card. Its only SD. It works fine in my Nikon D5000, which I've been using a lot, but won't work for my D300. There are adapters though. Just type "SD to CF Adapter" into Google and you'll find plenty. Anyway, hope you enjoy. Click here to download the video to your computer.
Presets - Standard Print Sizes

On the heels of a few related printing questions lately, I realized its actually not quite as intuitive to set up a print for say a standard 8x10 or even 5x7. I'm not talking about photos in a picture package, but just one 8x10 photo per page. So I went ahead and created a few presets for some of them. Its not all of them but its a start and I'll be updating them over the coming weeks. Right now I've included print presets for an 8x10, 5x7, and 4x6. To install: 1) Unzip the preset zip file on to your desktop 2) Go to the PRINT module. NOTE: YOU MUST BE THE PRINT MODULE 3) Go to the Templates panel on the left. Right click anywhere in it and choose Import. 4) Select the .lrtemplate files you unzipped in Step 1 and click Import NOTE: DO NOT IMPORT THE ZIP FILE Click here to download the presets Bookmark It

Presets - More Retouching Presets

Today I've got an update to some older retouching presets I created for the Adjustment Brush in Lightroom 2. On an interesting "retouching" side-note (and one that I promise I did not plan) Scott Kelby wrote a really fascinating article on the Kelly Clarkson retouching controversy. What I found most interesting is that it's not about what you'd think (a retouching ethics article). They've been done to death. It's about an entirely new angle on retouching that nobody ever speaks about, but is an absolute reality. Definitely worth a read. OK back to the presets. This update happens a lot for two reasons: 1) I add new presets and, 2) As I use my presets for a while I find that I need to change their settings. These presets focus on some of the basic retouching effects you can achieve with the Adjustment Brush. Now, before you download them, keep one thing in mind. These aren't for high-end fashion retouching. Photoshop is still the best place for that. They're geared for some quick enh...

These presets focus on some of the basic retouching effects you can achieve with the Adjustment Brush. Now, before you download them, keep one thing in mind. These aren't for high-end fashion retouching. Photoshop is still the best place for that. They're geared for some quick enhancements that you can do right in Lightroom when you just don't have the time to move the photos into Photoshop. In this set, I've included: 1) Brightening/Whitening Teeth 2) Whiten Eyes 3) Red Lips 4) Iris Enhance 5) Skin Softening (Low) 6) Skin Softening (High) Just like the last set of retouching brushes, I tried to stay pretty conservative on the settings but one of the challenges I came across was the settings worked differently on different photos. But I do think they're a good starting place. Plus, you can always quickly adjust the sliders after you apply them. Anyway, these are a little different to install from the regular Develop presets so here's the instructions. 1) Navigate to your Lightroom presets folder. The easiest way to do this is to go to Lightroom's preferences by clicking the Lightroom menu and choosing Preferences (PC: Edit Preferences). Then choose the Presets tab and click the "Show Lightroom Presets Folder" button to open the Lightroom Folder. 2) Now go into the Lightroom Folder. Then go into the Local Adjustment Presets folder. You'll know you're in the right folder because you should see the file "Soften Skin.lrtemplate" there too. NOTE: A number of Mac readers commented that their presets were not stored here. Here is the location that a few readers gave, though mine are not located here: Pictures/Lightroom Settings/Local Adjustment Presets 3) UNZIP the file you downloaded from the bottom of this post. I repeat UNZIP the file you downloaded. Do not try to install the ZIP file :) 4) Copy and paste the ".lrtemplate" files into the Local Adjustment Presets folder. 5) Restart Lightroom Enjoy! • Click here to download Matt's Retouching Brushes.
Presets - Morning Glow

Hey there! I've got another summery preset for you today. First, don't forget that I'll be teaching a full-day Lightroom seminar in Chicago on July 20th and New York City on July 22nd. You can sign up over at KelbyTrainingLive.com. I'd love to see ya there. OK, now on to the preset. I was experimenting with the Summer Haze preset I created a while back and came up with another one that looks similar but different enough to create a whole new preset. I've named it Morning Glow. Its got a very warm morning-ish glow feel to it and even has a soft-ish look as well (sorry for all the "ish" words). What I found really cool-ish about it (sorry, that's the last "ish" I promise) is that it looks it works great on different kinds of photos. I created it for portraits, but was pleasantly surprised when I tried it on a few landscapes too. Anyway, the download is below so have at it and let me know what you think. Thanks for stopping by. • Click here to see a sample of the preset. • Click here t...

Presets - Summer Haze 2

I'm bringing back the summer haze preset from last year with a few changes. I know it's not technically summer yet but Memorial Day is here in the US and, ever since I was a kid, that signifies "summer is here" (and if you live in Florida like I do, the torrential rain we've had every day for the last few days should already have you in that summery mood). This was one of my favorite presets from last year. Its just a really cool effect to get that summery, warm, hazy feeling in a photo. The preset adjusts the white balance, Vibrance, Saturation, and Split Toning sliders. I even tossed in a bit of a Tone Curve adjustment on it in the Shadows since the other settings seemed to muddy the photo up a bit, and I thought it needed some more blacks to bring back the contrast. It works great on fun-styled outdoor portraits and even makes a pretty nifty wedding effect. Enjoy! Click here to see a sample of the preset. <itunes:summary>I'm bringing back the summer haze preset from last year with a few changes.
Presets - Better Black and Whites

Hey there. I'm back for another preset day. I wanted to share some new black and white ideas I've been working on in Lightroom. As you can imagine, there's a few different ways to do black and whites (remember, they're NOT called grayscale photos) in Lightroom. But, I've been honing in on what I think is the best since some methods tend to deteriorate the photo too much (or produce too much noise). This week, I'm releasing some that I've created recently that are specifically for landscape photos. They've been very dramatic for the photos I've run them on and I think they really give that high-contrast Black and white look to a photo. There's a preset for some general landscape scenes but, of course, feel free to try them on anything, as each photo is different and may respond to my settings in a different way then I intended. I hope you enjoy and please let me know what you think of them in the comments. Have a great day! • See the Before/After view of the presets here • Download t...

I recorded a video on cropping before I left so I'd have it ready to go today. It's another one of those videos that came from one of the comments I received here on the site. It has to do with batch cropping or applying some sort of crop to a bunch of photos. There's actually a little more to it then I thought which is why this one turned into a video. Enjoy! Today's the first day of my Arches National Park photo workshop in Moab, Utah. Over the next few days I'll be up at the crack of dawn (starting at 4am today) with my class shooting some of the prettiest landscapes in the country. Then we'll hit the classroom to process the photos and go through the whole workflow. I'll try to post some photos as we go along. OK, video time... Enjoy! So I came back home and naturally had to 1) Figure out where I messed it up and, 2) Do a video of the technique to regain my confidence back :) Anyway, if you were at the show and saw me mess up, then you'll get to see this run flawlessly. And if you weren't at Photoshop World, then you'll get to see it run flawlessly, all the while never knowing the humiliation I suffered last Friday. Enjoy!
Presets - Vintage New York Look

Happy Monday! I'm heading up to Boston this week to teach at Photoshop World (and the first ever Lightroom Conference at Photoshop World) but I wanted to add a preset here that I've been updating. A while back, I released a Vintage New York styled preset. Well, I was working on another effect this week and I realized that it looked very similar to the one I just mentioned. However, after a couple of tweaks I liked this one better so I've updated it. You can keep both or delete the old one and just use this one. Either way, I think it's a cool effect. It's primarily geared toward portraits. One thing you'll notice if you look at the settings after you apply it, is that I bumped up the Orange and Yellows in the HSL panel to bring back some life to the skin. As I mentioned earlier, this is mainly geared towards portraits but give it a try on other types of photos as I've gotten some really fantastic results. • See the Before/After view of the presets here • Download the presets here. •...

Video - Auto Advancing Your Photos

This time around we’re going to look at a small setting that makes a big difference in the Library module. It’s called Auto Advance and it makes sorting through your photos work a little bit more like you’d think it should. In a nutshell, the setting automatically moves you to the next photo in the Library module once you apply some sort of rating or flat to it. It’s easy to turn on and I think once you’ve used it for a while you’ll wonder how you ever did without it. Enjoy! Click here to download the Video Bookmark It

Presets - Polo / Ralph Lauren Style

Hey there! I got some inspiration for this preset while looking through a magazine this past weekend. I saw a Ralph Lauren/Polo ad and I noticed their photos have a very distinct look to them. As always, I made it my mission to recreate the effect and I think I got pretty darn close. As you’ll see, it’s got a hint of green to it with a slightly desaturated look. I tried it out on some actual polo sport photos but I also tried it on some wedding photos and it had a very neat look to it. It’s worth mentioning that it seems to work best on brighter photos, so darker sunset photos or photos taken indoors probably won’t look as good. But give it a try and let me know what you think. Thanks! Click here to see a sample of the Polo/Ralph Lauren Preset preset.
Video - Stripping the Metadata from Your Photos

What’s really great about this website is that I get to share my experiences of teaching Lightroom (and the questions asked) with all of you even if you can’t be there. Today’s video is one of those cases where I wrote down a question last time I taught Lightroom that I heard multiple people ask through out the day. What they were looking for is an easy way to strip the metadata (typically the EXIF data) from the photos that they send to a client or post on to the web. They simply didn’t want others to be able to see the aperture, shutter speed, ISO, lens, etc… that were used for the photo. Well, Lightroom has a feature that does just that and we’ll take a look at it in this video. Click here to download the Video Bookmark It

Presets - Focal Point for Landscapes

Hey there! I’m pretty excited about this week’s presets. I had an idea a while back about using the adjustment brush to create a focal point in certain parts of the photo (by darkening the rest of the photo). The vignetting controls are great for doing this but if your subject isn’t in the middle of the photo then it doesn’t work as well. So I figured I could use the adjustment brush to darken parts of the photo and save it as a preset. Wrong! I quickly found out you couldn’t save adjustment brush controls as a preset so I went back to the drawing board and came up with this idea instead. I’ve created 4 different presets that each use the Graduated Filter to do something similar. This week’s batch is for Landscapes only (top left, top right, bottom left, and bottom right). However, I’m working on an update that I’ll get out next week for portraits as well. Enjoy ‘em and let me know what you think! <itunes:subtitle>Hey there! I’m pretty excited about this week’s presets.
Video - GPS Info

I wrote the post below (about the new Nikon D-Town show) last night so it released at midnight. I got up this morning and realized that I didn’t really have any official Lightroom insights to offer for the day in that post, so I created this video. We actually touch on the GPS information that is stored with your photos (if you have a GPS unit attached to your camera of course) in the D-town show. We even showed where you can get that information in Lightroom. But I figured not everyone shoots Nikon so a lot of people won’t even watch the show. So here’s the condensed 3 minute version of how GPS info relates to your photos in Lightroom. It’s actually a very cool feature and with many sharing sites today reading GPS information and taking viewers directly to a map of that location it makes it even more fun. Enjoy! Click here to download the video Bookmark It

Video - Vignetting and Edge Darkening

Today I had to share something that happened to me recently when I was working on my photos. I don’t know why it happens but there’s a noticeable difference in the edge-darkening effects that the Lens Correction sliders give vs. the Post-Crop Vignetting sliders. To me, one is clearly better then the other. In the video, I’ll go over each one and I think you’ll see which one wins out in a heartbeat. I’m also interested in hearing your thoughts on the matter to see if you’ve come across the same issue. Thanks again for sharing your time with me through another great week. If you live up north anywhere then stay out of the snow and if you’re down south then enjoy the nice weather. I know I’m gonna.
Video - Multi Photo Picture Packages

I have the absolute coolest trick to share for those of you who like Print module templates and want to do something more with them. First I have to give credit where credit is due. The tip came from Enzo in Italy last week in the Q&A post that I did. I had answered a question about putting multiple photos into a picture package layout and said that it couldn’t be done. Well, thanks to this tip from Enzo, that’s not necessarily true. Enjoy the video and please post any links or ideas you may have for your own ideas on how to use this kind of template. Click here to download the video Bookmark It

Presets - Yellow Duotones

Hi everybody. It’s time for another round of presets. This week I was tinkering around with the Duotones that you can find in Photoshop (Image Mode Duotone). As is usually the case, I always try to recreate whatever I can in Lightroom and I think I’ve come pretty darn close here in volume 1. So we’ll kick the Duotones off with the yellow presets I found in the list. They’re actually called “Yellow bl 1″, “Yellow bl 2″ and so on but we’ll just called them Yellow 1, 2, 3 and 4. I hope you like ‘em. UPDATE: I realized that I did not include the Black and White conversion in the original presets (which is a big part of them). So if you downloaded these any time before 3:30 EST then go ahead and re-download them for the new ones (and delete the old ones). Thansk Click here to see a sample of the preset. Click here to download Matt’s Yellow Duotone Presets Click here to see a video on how to install presets . Bookmark It

Presets - High Key Effect

This time around I’m digging way back into preset requests to one that really wouldn’t have looked as good in Lightroom 1 - the High Key effect. There’s a few components to this effect. First and foremost shooting a high key image (the exposure and lighting work done before hand) is really the main way to do this. But there’s still some things things that we can do in post-processing to help if the photo wasn’t taken that way. There’s also a degree of blur involved that we really couldn’t do in Lightroom 1 but with Lightroom 2 we have negative clarity and it makes things a bit easier. As you download the presets you’ll notice there’s 3 flavors ranging from high to higher to highest so you’ll have a few choices to pick the best from. As always let me (and the other comment readers) know what you think and if/how these can be useful for you. Thanks for stopping by! Click here to see a sample of the preset.
Video - Organizing Your Presets

Happy video day everyone! This week’s video is something I’ve been asked about a lot lately - organizing your presets. The funny (or not-so-funny depending on how you look at it) part about it is that there’s not any secret tips for organizing your presets in Lightroom. Basically, they let you create folders and you can put presets in those folders. But there are a few little things you can do to help organize your favorites and help get them to where you can find the best ones faster. Click here to download the video Bookmark It

Presets - Old Fashioned Effect

Here’s another preset that’s comes straight from the request lines (your comments). It’s an old fashioned faded kinda look and it comes complete with faded edges and everything. I’m actually really happy with it as I’ve always liked using my “Vintage New York” effect and this one adds a little more of that vintage look to a photo. Also, after you download the presets you’ll see there’s two versions. One for people and another for everything else. That doesn’t mean you can’t use the people one on other stuff and vice-versa, but I’ve found that you can get some weird effects if you use the “everything else” one on people so be careful. Enjoy! Click here to see a sample of the preset. Click here to download Matt’s Old Fashioned Effect Presets Click here to see a video on how to install presets . Bookmark It

Presets - Max Payne Movie Style

Howdy folks. I hope you had a great weekend - I know I did. I’m gearing up for the Lightroom 2 Live Tour in Covington, KY this Friday so make sure you come out and see me if you’re in the area. Now, on to the presets. I was watching the NFL playoff games yesterday and saw a commercial for the upcoming DVD release of the Max Payne movie. I caught a quick glimpse of a neat effect that I quickly tried to replicate in Lightroom. It’s basically all red. At first it looked really weird but I tweaked a few other settings as well as added some edge darkening (doesn’t every effect have that these days) and it turned out pretty cool. One word of caution though. This preset is meant for a very specific style of photo. Photos that have that edgier look and especially sports or senior portraits will probably benefit most from it. In other words, don’t try it on photos of small babies, warm family portraits or tiny kittens Click here to see a sample of the preset. Cl...

Today I’ve got something a little different for you. Instead of listening to my voice for 5 minutes, you get to listen to Adobe’s Lightroom Product Manager Tom Hogarty (and my voice a little). Tom was in NAPP’s headquarters last month and I pulled him aside to talk about some emerging areas in Lightroom. Topics such as some of the pro DSLRs that shoot video and Lightroom’s camera profiles as well as the DNG editor came up. It’s pretty cool to get a chance like this and I think Tom’s got some good insights. He even tips Adobe’s hand just a bit about some future development. Hope you enjoy.
Presets - Single Photo Flush Left/Right preset

Time for another print preset. I was creating a photo book from Shutterfly.com the other day and came across this really neat idea for a preset. See, Shutterfly’s website allows you to customize the layout of each page in the photo book. Two of the choices placed the photo flush against the left or right side of the page. I saw it and immediately thought “Hmmmm, I wonder I can do that in Lightroom?”. After a few minutes of adjusting the layout settings I realized you could not only recreate the position of the photo but you could also recreate the caption area they had as well with the Identity plate. So give ‘em a try and let me know what you think. Click here to see a sample of the preset. Click here to download Matt’s Single Photo Flush Left/Right presets Click here to see a video on how to install presets REMEMBER: YOU NEED TO BE IN THE PRINT MODULE, NOT THE DEVELOP MODULE FOR THESE PRESETS .
Video - Jagged ID Plates and Printing

This week’s video is on a topic that’s bit weird - jagged Identity Plates. See, if you’ve never tried to import a custom identity plate graphic into Lightroom then you’ve probably never had this problem. But if you have then you’re probably about ready to shoot somebody. Just about every time I try to use a custom graphic in the Print module as an Identity Plate it comes up jagged on the page. Notice I said “just about”. That’s because sometimes it doesn’t. Until now, there was no rhyme nor reason to it but, with some help, I think we’ve figured out a way to get around this issue so you can create some pretty cool print design right inside of Lightroom.
Presets - Updated Auto Fix Preset with Profiles

Hi everyone. A while back I released an Auto Enhance preset and, to my surprise, a lot of folks out there are just as lazy as me and it turned out to be pretty popular Honestly, it’s not really laziness. It’s just that I found myself making the same adjustments over and over again and the Auto Tone settings in Lightroom coupled with some of the Vibrance, Clarity and Vignetting settings that I always use made it a perfect candidate for an auto preset to apply in the Import dialog. Well, I’ve gone and updated the preset to include 1) The new camera profiles and, 2) Better edge darkening the with the Post-Crop Vignette sliders. So here’s the deal. First, they’re only for Nikon and Canon. Next, the preset turns on the Auto Tone setting in Lightroom and it’s just like clicking on Auto at the top of the Develop module panels. However, it also includes some Clarity and Vibrance changes in addition to the edge darkening. That stuff stays the same for ALL ...

However, it also includes some Clarity and Vibrance changes in addition to the edge darkening. That stuff stays the same for ALL of them. What does change is the camera profile that is applied, which is why there’s a bunch of Auto presets. They’re intended to be used as you’re importing your photos into Lightroom. If your particular shoot was a portrait session and you’re fond of the Nikon “Camera Portrait” profile then choose the “Auto Enhance - Portrait (Nikon)” preset. If you were on a landscape shoot then try the “Auto Enhance - Landscape (Nikon)” preset or even the vivid one. If you shot a portrait with a great landscape behind it, well, you’re outta luck Actually, it kind of relies on you at least knowing which profiles you’ve become fond of because you’ll need to decide which to apply on import. Remember, if you pick the wrong one you can always change it. And don’t forget, I’ve got a video from way back called “Applying Edits to Multiple Photos” that shows you how to change a bunch of photos all at once so it’s not that big of a deal to choose the wrong one to start. Thanks and I hope you like ‘em. •Click here to download Matt’s Auto Enhance Presets for Nikon Profiles •Click here to download Matt’s Auto Enhance Presets for Canon Profiles •Click here to see a video on how to install presets.
Video - White Balance for JPEGs and TIFFs

I gotta say, when I discovered this week’s video tip I was pretty excited. I shoot in Raw 100% of the time now but I’ll still have to deal with JPEGs because a) I have older files that I didn’t shoot in raw, b) I’ll have files from my wife’s point-n-shoot that are JPEGs, c) some one gives me a file to work on that isn’t raw. Well, one of the biggest challenges is getting the right color balance and Lightroom’s white balance preset list (Cloudy, Flash, Daylight, etc…) help out a lot. But they don’t work on JPEGs right? Wrong! They do. I’ll show ya how in this week’s video. Have a safe and happy new year everyone!
Presets - 2×2 Print Presets

Hey there! I hope everyone had an awesome Christmas and enjoyed the holidays - I know I did. Now that things have settled down, I wanted to share a preset that I created for a family member over the weekend. It’s based on a contact sheet but instead of a lot of photos across and down, I created one with just 2 across and 2 down. Then I added an identity plate right below in the white space and it turned out pretty darn cool. Now I personally used (and like best) the vertical version but I’ve also included a horizontal one too. Print presets work pretty much like other presets. The best thing to do is just go to your Template Browser in the Print module, right click on “User Templates” and choose Import. Then select the file that you’ve downloaded from here (don’t forget to Unzip it first). Enjoy! Click here to see a sample of the preset. Click here to download Matt’s 2×2 Print Presets Click here to see a video on how to install presets....

Presets - Updated Camera Profiles

It’s time for another update to some presets I released a few months back. If you recall from a previous post, Lightroom 2.2 has included the new camera profiles by default. If you’re not sure what they are then make sure you watch this video. Now, if you went ahead and removed the old beta profiles then you’ll quickly find the presets I created for them back in the summer don’t work anymore. So I’ve updated them for both the Nikon and Canon profiles. There’s actually two downloads so make sure you download the one for your camera brand. • Click here to download Nikon’s Camera Profiles. • Click here to download Canon’s Camera Profiles. • Click here to see a video on how to install presets.
