Another company making news during EVS 23, the Electric Vehicle Symposium, was Vectrix Corporation. Durng the show, Chief Marketing Officer Jeff Morrill introduced me to the V3, an all electric three-wheeler featuring twin front wheels that grasp the road during cornering, offering the agility of a scooter and the safety and stability of a small car. It's lithium ion battery powers the three-wheeler 0-50 MPH in 5.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of 62 mph and goes 40-60 miles on a single charge. Yet at lower speeds, the bike is stable and allows riders to remain upright without ever having to put their feet down. Tags: EVS 23, Jeff Morrill, V3, Vectrix

I met EJ Wessel, owner of Big Kid Toys in Napa, Calif., at the LA Auto Show, but sadly, I wasn't able to go for a ride in his T-Rex then. So when we met at EVS 23, the Electric Vehicle Symposium in Anaheim, Calif., I was all game for for a test ride. The electric version was on the show room floor and getting primed for its appearance in an MTV special, so I had to forgo that experience, but a ride on the gasoline version was just as fun. 0-60 in under 4 seconds...definately a gas! Tags: Big Kid Toys, EJ Wessel, EVS 23, LA Auto Show, T-Rex

American Hi Definition and Sweetwater Digital of Van Nuys, CA, hosted the first annual Renewable L.A., a day long "consumption-lite" eco fest, celebrating renewable energy and transportation. The first annual solar open house and green holiday gift event put a spotlight on the largest solar installation in the area, constructed by Energy Efficiency Solar of Pomona, CA, comprised of 600, 190-watt individual solar panels. In addition to test rides of two Vectrix Maxi-Scooters and three ZENN's, the over 300 visitors who attended the event had a special treat when an EV1, one of the handful not notoriously crushed in 2005 by the all-electric car's maker, GM, made a surprise appearance, driving onto the event's parking lot. I spoke with Alexandra Paul, actress, EV1 advocate and activist, who appeared in the movie, Who Killed the Electric Car, about the momentous occasion.
Actor and activist Ed Begley, Jr. has been an ardent advocate for the environment for nearly 40 years, long before it was politically correct. During the Alt Car Expo in Santa Monica, I spoke with him about his passion and committment to green living, as well as his role as company spokesman for Izip, a Chatsworth, Calif., company that maufactures and sells a line of hybrid electric bikes and scooters for "clean and green" personal transportation.
RIDE DRIVE: Chevy's Equinox Fuel Cell Vehicle

During GM's Electric Drive University in Newport Beach, Calif., I had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the new Chevy Equinox fuel cell prototype vehicle for a ride and drive with Brad Beauchamp. He's a driver relationship manager for GM's Project Driveway, and is a veritable wealth of information of the crossover hydrogen-fueled, electricity-powered SUV. A skeptic of hydrogen for vehicle power, I was amazed at how quiet the vehicle was and thoroughly enjoyed my time in the auto, and am warming to the idea of this as an alternative fuel for the future. Tags: Electric Drive University, Chevy Equinox, fuel cell, Brad Beauchamp, Project Driveway

Meet Davi Kutz

Davi Kutz is your ordinary Joe, living in North Hollywood, Calif. An avid outdoorsman, he's also one lucky fellow. That's because for the next three months, he'll be one of 100 people in L.A., Washington, D.C. and New York City who will be driving a new Chevy Equinox hydrogen fuel cell vehicle as part of GM's Project Driveway. The goal of the program is to put these test vehicles into the hands of average citizens, as well as some celebrities and policy makers, to obtain real-time driving data and consumer feedback. I met with Davi in Newport Beach, Calif., while at GM's Electric Drive University, where I also got the opportunity to get behind the wheel of one of these prototype crossover SUV's. Want to be a part of the project? Click here to see if you are elegible. Tags: Davi Kutz, Chevy Equinox, Project Driveway, Electric Drive University

Anthony led the team that brough the Opel Flextreme from drawing board to it's unveiling in Germany last month. Designed on the same E-Flex platform as the Chevy Volt, the Flextreme came to be in a remarkably short time, less than 9 months. Tags: Frankfurt Auto Show, Chevy Volt, Flextreme

Recently, I sat down with Chelsea Sexton, the unlikely star of Who Killed the Electric Car? Our conversation covered may topics from the EV1 to the Chevy Volt and everything in between. I like Chelsea - her unassuming attitude is refreshing. Plus, her convictions and extensive knowledge of alternative fuels is inspiring. And despite her experience with GM, Chelsea remains hopeful about the company, still driving a Saturn, her 8th one to date.
Opel Astra Coming to America

The second-best selling car in Europe (only behind the VW Golf), the Opel Astra, is coming to America under the Saturn brand. The vehicle is expected to arrive on American shores in early 2008, and get this, for around $15k! Fully loaded, you can expect it to retail closer to $20k, but for that price I was amazed at what you get. (Especially when you consider the smart Fortwo will arrive at about the same time and at the smae price.) I saw this car in Chicago where I spoke with Jill Lajdziak about the vehicle. Of course, they hadn't announced the price at that time, and I wasn't able to take it for a test drive. However, during the Frankfurt Auto Show, we got a chance to get behind the wheel on the Opel test track and I was able to get the car to about 220kph or 130mph. What fun! Sadly though, I wasn't able to get a camera in the vehicle because of legal issues, but Chris and Ponzi Pirillo mounted one inside for their test drive. You can watch their video here.
