“The only thing new in the world is the history you don’t know.”
- Harry S Truman
Virginia-based host and vinyl archeologist Rick Chernitzer takes you on an eclectic journey through the vinyl. Not to be tied down to strictly vinyl, but the goal here is to present music not often heard on commerical radio stations (at least not much anymore). Discussions about the artists and their releases round out the program. This is all about the music. Rare tracks are our specialty!
The ultimate “deep cuts” podcast, Drop the Needle explores the lesser known tracks from the 1960s through the 1990s, sometimes from bands you’ve heard of, and from some discarded by the wayside and cut-out bins of obscurity.
The show has its origins when I was a DJ for Armed Forces Radio in Japan and Cuba, when I would raid the very extensive vinyl collection that these stations maintained until the end of the 90s when CDs were firmly in place as the medium of choice for broadcasts. The vinyl collections were tragically destroyed for copyright protection reasons. But the memories of searching through those collections for off-brand tunes that I only heard the first time I played them on air remain with me even today.
If you learn anything at all about music you’ve never heard before, then it will all be worth it to me. And if you hear a track you knew and thought no one else knew about, then welcome to the fold!
