Convenor of the Greenleap Strategic Institute, Philip Sutton, has released his presentation on why we must go to zero emissions and beyond across all sectors. Mr Sutton’s presentation runs through the reasons why the current goals adopted by governments and by the environment movement will lead us directly into a climate disaster of epic proportions and why we must immediately move to a zero emission minus goal. Philip is a long-time environmental activist and campaigner, he currently runs the Greenleap Strategic Institute and is president of the Sustainable Living Foundation. The Greenleap Strategic Institute is part of the Zero Emission Network which together support achieving meaningful goals on climate change.

A major victory has been won by the Aboriginal movement in Australia. The Queensland attorney-general’s department has decided that Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley will be charged with manslaughter over the death of Mulrunji Doomadgee. Mulrunji, an Aboriginal man, died in police custody on Palm Island in 2004. Hurley’s charge was announced by Andrew Boe, Palm Island council’s legal adviser, to the 700 people who had gathered at Brisbane’s annual Invasion Day rally on January 26. The announcement changed the focus of the rally to a more conscious celebration of Aboriginal resistance. Since many indigenous activists had come to Brisbane for the protest from communities across Queensland and New South Wales, Invasion Day 2007 presented an opportunity to discuss and plan ahead. This was a major theme taken up by the speakers both at the rally and during the militant march that followed.

Brisbane:On October 10th members of Qlds indigenous community and their supporters marched on the Queensland state parliament. The protest had been called to demand justice for Palm Islander Mulrinji, killed in police custody in November 2004. The intention was to present petitions collected throughout the state which demanded that the police officer found responsible in the recent coroners report for Mulrinji’s death be sacked. The police officer named, Chris Hurley, had in the time since the aboriginal’s death, been promoted and transferred from Palm Island to the Gold Coast and no adminsitrative action had been taken against him. This was a militant march—and the determination and anger of those particpating is clear from this recording which begins at the gates of parliament.Speakers were Sam Watson, a leader of the Brisbane Murri community. members of Mulrinji’s family from Palm Island, and state premier, Peter Beattie.
