The Levelator

Our friends over at GigaVox have released something called The Levelator: "So what is The Levelator? It's software that runs on Windows or OS X (universal binary) that adjusts the audio levels within your podcast or other audio file for variations from one speaker to the next, for example. It's not a compressor, normalizer or limiter although it contains all three. It's much more than those tools, and it's much simpler to use. The UI is dirt-simple: Drag-and-drop any WAV or AIFF file onto The Leveler's application window, and a few moments later you'll find a new version which just sounds better."

Sounds pretty good.

Odeo Reborn

Today, Odeo is officially under the wing of a new entity called Obvious. Obvious is a company formed by us, the people who make Odeo. You can read more about the birth of Obvious at Ev's blog.

This structural change means we're even more focused on giving Odeo the attention it requires. Our efforts will center around making the service better for the folks who are already using it as well as the people who have yet to discover what audio on the web is all about.

Crystal's Picks

Crystal, who works to my left here at Odeo HQ just sent out an internal email with a list of some notable audio programming she's discovered recently. We've been slacking on the blog posts lately so I'm taking this opportunity to pass them along.
Good, free audio on the web. Nice! Thanks Crystal.

Public Odeo Stats

The other day we put a yellow sticky-note type deal in the sidebar of all our Odeo pages to help explain what Odeo offers to folks who wander in off the web. You won't see it if you're logged in because we figure you know already but it but it has some fun infotainment.
Hi, this is Odeo.

We have 2,126,971 mp3s from all over the web, which have been played from Odeo 6,906,097 times.

You can download or play them straight from here for free. (You can also put them on your web site.)

And like 191,808 other people, you can create an account, so you can subscribe to things and save the stuff you like.
These stats are important to us so we thought it might be interesting to Odeo users to know more about what's going on "behind the screen." The sidebar features numbers like how many mp3's we have, how many registered Odeo users there are, and the number of times the mp3's have been played on the web. The sticky note will update as the numbers continue to grow.

Phone Posting News

We've contacted each of the folks who've tried Odeo phone posting at some point since we decided to put the feature out there so you might already have received this news. However, in case you didn't hear: As of November 1, 2006 Odeo phone posting will stop taking calls.

Phone posting, while nifty as features go, has not been a very popular feature of Odeo since it launched. For lack of a better analagy, the Odeo community has basically voted phone posting off the island.

It's important to us that we experiment with interesting ideas and features but Odeo is a small company and we must apply continued time, effort, and money carefully on tools and features that our users really want and use. That being said, we will continue to host all media created through phone posts.

Also, if you really enjoy phone posting you can still do it. There are other services (Gabcast, Hipcast, Gcast) that provide the same feature and they are all compatible with Odeo if you want to import your audio to make an Odeo page or use our embed codes for your site.

NaNoWriMo Podcast

The folks over at NaNoWriMo have a podcast featuring "interviews, essays, special guests, advice, your voice mails, a weekly pep talk from NaNoWriMo founder Chris Baty, and much, much more, WrimoRadio should, at the very least, give you a safe harbor to duck into every week, an opportunity to re-energize before returning to the treacherous waters of novel writing."

Here's more information about WrimoRadio.
