Happy Birthday, Odeo

From Upstairs Odeo was founded by Noah and Ev just about one year ago today. To celebrate, they got us a couple of things: a dedicated sysadmin (that's Jeremy there on the right), and a new space!

Pretty soon, we'll be moving to the south side of South Park. It's quite an improvement over our current space:
  • Larger common room
  • More than one floor
  • Lots of different-sized rooms
  • Receptionist area (as if!)
  • Heating
  • Skylights
  • Sidebar-green decor
  • Wooden rafters
  • Private roof
  • Nice kitchen
Best of all, it's right around the corner.
Here's to another big year for our little Odeo!

Point Taken

The Last Podcast: "Podcasting is not blogging. The cost of entry is so much higher in term of time invested and soul bared. There are only so many people out there comfortable enough with their voice to broadcast it around the world."

There's truth to this "soul bared" stuff and that's one of the strengths of voice--the vast amounts of nuanced metadata along for the ride. You don't need a smiley made out of assorted punctuation at the end of a sarcastic comment when you're actually speaking.

It's also why we've created ways for people to record their voice and share it with just one or a few other people. Check back with us next summer and see if we've closed our doors ;-)

He Likes Boats

Brendan Greeley is one of Public Radio's big thinkers and he doesn't hold back when it comes envisioning the future. They're eclectic, they're obscure, they're Brendan's picks: Brendan Greeley's Odeo Roundup.
Open Source's Brendan Greeley didn't have a job title when he started his new gig in May, so he made one up: blogger-in-chief of Open Source, a public radio talk show. He used to write for traditional print outlets, among them the New York Times and The New York Times Magazine. He sneaked in to radio through a piece about lawnmower racing on Transom.org and a year as the site editor of the Public Radio Exchange. He likes boats.
See if any of those podcasts float yer boat.

Exactly!

Recording from Odeo Studio: "I will never forget the birthday song my brother left on my answering machine several years ago. He called me on my birthday and since I wasn't home, he picked up his guitar and sang to me through my answering machine. Sadly, the song is long gone because it was on a crappy, little tape. Next year, I'll send him to Odeo so I will be able to save my birthday song mp3."

We Didn't Pay Her, I Swear

Bosphorus Ramblings: "The last few days I have been playing with sound. I came across an online recording system, kind of like blogger, but for audio files, called Odeo. It looks absolutely wonderful, with all kinds of possibilities for all kinds of people. It's easy to use, easy to send out. You could, for example, read out loud and record Dear Abbey every morning, save it online at Odeo.com, and then I, here on the other side of the earth, could download it onto my computer and then onto my MP3 player and I could listen to it as I walk to work. That's just an example-- but let's say instead of Dear Abbey, you had the latest news from your family, or your business, or your cancer fund raising drive-- it's easy, and it's fun."

Podcast Amongst Yourselves

Today we're launching a new version of Odeo with several big changes. The most notable is that everyone can now record audio with the browser-based Odeo Studio - or via the phone. Either way, your voice gets posted as an MP3 on an Odeo page, and from there you can easily share it or edit the title, etc.

We've also made some changes to how the site looks and works, which we think make it simpler and move it closer to our vision of Podcasting for Regular People. Here are a few major things you will notice:

New Home Page
For those who haven't joined or logged in yet, our home page is a simple, explanatory design that links to a short tour and signup form. Yes, the bird is wearing a hat and tie but Odeo is still about casual content creation.

The "Audio Inbox"
Once you're logged in, Odeo is more focused on you. All the audio that you subscribe to or has been sent to you by mutual contacts (that's another new thing) is collected in one spot. Any time you click your name in the upper-right corner or the Odeo logo in the upper-left corner, you're brought back to this page.

Make A Peep!
Once you create a recording, you can share it with your Odeo contacts or by email. Peeps are your Odeo contacts that you can add, delete, and otherwise manage. Or you can share your audio with the world by placing it in a channel.

We've put a lot of mojo into this update and we're really excited about the direction things are taking. For more info, have a look at our FAQs and if you have a specific question, email us and we'll help you out.
