Up north there is a labor dispute between the CBC and
it's workers. The journalists are locked out of their studios so they are turning to podcasting.
Todd Maffin of
i love radio has setup a
cbc unplugged podcast. Perhaps this will open up people's eyes to podcasting as a medium. Without the expensive equipment or transmitters they can produce great radio programs.

We're testing a new concept with KQED, the public radio station in San Francisco - a
collaborative podcast. Check it out. And feel free to join in.

Ev, Rabble, Blaine and I all had the distinct pleasure of attending Foo Camp this year up in Sebastopol California. We all arrived at work on monday "tired and inspired". I think that I slept a total of 5 hours the entire weekend. It was a great time filled with interesting conversations with people who are changing the world for the better. I recorded a few of my conversations here on the
Foo Camp Channel at Odeo.

I have been waiting for this Microphone for a long time. I waited...and waited...and waited. After many delays they finally shipped it. The Showball from
Blue Microphones was designed to be a laptop recording studio companion. The fact that it is usb eliminates the need for lots of bits and parts that traditional mics require.
My first impressions: It looks very cool. A little on the large side. I am still undecided on the sound quality. I could use a little more tonal warmth. but I am still messing with settings so we will see.
I used it for the first time on the Train coming back from our group David Allen Lecture. Check it out on the
Odeo Channel featuring Rabble and Blaine:-)
Oh, I got snowball at Guitar Center.

We have no idea if it's a joke or not, but we've been enjoying listening to
interfm's Better English with Catherine which helps young japanese learn such important english phrases as
you're so mean!,
your toupee is crooked,
she likes much older men, and the most useful of all
he's dressed like Freddy Mercury.

Microsoft says iPod to face more competition: "'Now that Apple has single-handedly taken the market, all the world's consumer electronics makers are zooming in on it,' said [Erik Huggers, the head of Microsoft's Digital Media Division]. 'They are just not going to let them get away with it. The first quarter of 2006 is going to get very interesting.'"
We shall see. Competition is good.

Jon Udell: I want my MP3: "It's great to offer streaming videos, but if they're not accompanied by separately-downloadable audio, I'm not going to be able to tune in nearly as much as I'd like. These days I absorb an amazing amount of high-tech media content, but mostly from ITConversations and very little from Microsoft or Sun events. The format really does matter!"

I'm proud to say we've acquired some fuel for our little enterprise from a great group of folks.
Leading the deal was
Charles River Ventures, featuring
George Zachary. Noah and I were introduced to George by our mutual friend James Hong back in March. George has an awesome track record and a great reputation, and we got along well. Before and after meeting George, we took many other trips to
Sand Hill Road earlier this year, meeting with many other firms. We also did a lot of deep thinking and soul searching about what we were really trying to do with Odeo, which is a crucial part of the company-building/money-raising process. And we ended up doing a deal we're really happy about.
In addition to Charles River's involvement, we included another small firm,
Amicus Ventures, and a substantial group of individuals (both in number and weight) in the funding round:
Mitch Kapor,
Joe Kraus,
Tim O'Reilly,
Ron Conway,
Josh Kopelman,
Don Hutchinson,
Dave Pell,
Mike Maples,
Francesco Caio,
Barbara Poggiali,
Emanuele Angelidis,
James Hong, and
Ed Zschau.
Ariel Poler, who's helped build a number of successful Internet companies, is also on our board and an investor.
Needless to say, we're encouraged by the amount of interest Odeo was able to attract around this opportunityand the amount of promise people see in podcasting as a whole.
While it is lots of hard work and gratifying to have done, successfully raising money is, of course, not success itself. What it does do is allow us to invest a lot more in building new, compelling experiences that enable an exciting new medium. And that, we're very excited about.
(Oh, by the way, want to help?
We're hiring!)

Each week we beg, plead and bully friends and acquaintances into telling us about the
podcasts they like. The week, it's Phillip Torrone from Make Magazine making the picks.
