Today we added support for
microformats to our html on the site. Microformats are machine readable semantic markup which are transparently overlaid within our pages. We added support for
rel-tag,
rel-enclosure, and
xfn. If a microformat emerges for
time-shifted media and podcasting then we'll be adding support for that.
This is Odeo's small first step towards making the site more accessible to scripting and
web services.

People like little buttons, rss links, subscribe links, etc... With Odeo we haven't had a set of graphics so people have been creating their own. That's great. A number of podcasters including
La Linterna,
This Week In Tech, and
Digg Nation have already created their own custom Odeo graphics.
Seeing the good ideas from our podcasters we called up our icon master
Dan Cederholm and had him whip up some pretty icons.
You can see examples here with links created for
the Odeo channel.

We've been tweaking our feed polling bots for a while now. One thing people have been asking for is a way to notify odeo that their podcast has been updated. The podcast community already is pinging so that seemed like a good place to start.
We've got a web interface, rest, and the traditional xmlrpc ping service. To find out how to ping us check out
our faq or go directly to
odeo.com/channel/ping.
We aren't doing feed detection yet so make sure you ping us with your podcast feed and not the url to your blog. Pinging out will come when we open up the create section of the site.

Keith, over at iPod Army, writes: "I don't see iTunes as the best place to find content. I'll be using Odeo for that. Odeo is to iTunes in a way Flickr is to iPhoto for me. Not in the way they function really, although Odeo is alot like Flickr, but that they serve two different purposes. iTunes is my playing / catching application, and I'm hoping Odeo can be my social/network/find content application. It looks pretty good so far."
We hope so too. Keith nails direction we're going on the directory/discovery side (lots more to come to support that).

We're teaming up with the
Association of Music Podcasting (AMP) to build out our music section. They already have great programming and lots of good ideas - we hope to come up with some great stuff together. Check out the press release.
AMP and Odeo Team Up on Music PodcastingSan Francisco, July 13, 2005
In an agreement that capitalizes on the huge potential of independent music podcasting, Odeo and the Association of Music Podcasting have joined forces. The organizations will work together to showcase the best in legal, independently produced music in an open, device-agnostic platform. As part of the agreement, Odeo and AMP will engage in cross-promotional activities, collaborate on ways to better serve their users, and increase the amount of rights-free music available for podcasting.
About the Association of Music Podcasting
AMP was formed in January 2005 to unite podcasters who play legally available independent music. AMP DJs are music lovers who have access to great, mostly independent music that you probably haven't heard of (yet). AMP provides a fresh alternative, and it’s all 100% legal and safe to download. Each AMP member has his or her own unique podcast.

If you've signed up to get an invite to the site (or have emailed me personally), sorry you can't have one.
You can, however,
just go check out the site.

Ray, our flash developer got some nice attention from
Kevin Lynch today when Kevin demoed the Odeo studio at the Flash forward conference.
Justin who attended the conference says, "The coolest of the demos though was for
odeo. They have built a beta application to be an interface for that trendiest of trends, podCasting. In addition to subscribing and listening to podCasts, you can actually record your own using the built-in support for the microphone and publish it immediately on their site."
Nice work Ray!

Occasionally, I am reminded to update the Odeo homepage that people who don't have accounts see that says we're in an apartment in the Mission, but then I forget again. We've since moved to some no-frills, but comfortable, digs in San Francisco's SOMA area. Here's life at Odeo, captured in progress:

Noah ponders the future of audio distribution.

Bike parking, intern desk, lobby, room for growth...

Sunny conference room, and my desk. (Looks like we're in need of some better cord-management strategies.)

Long-haired developers (Rabble and Blaine) get stuff done against the blaring light of the bay. (Someday we'll make it so they don't have to share a desk.)

Trendmapper is a neat little service that will track the number of hits in Google and other major search engines for a given word -- and chart it over time. The trick is, it can't go back in time, so if the word you want to track is unique, you need to go add it and then wait a while for it to get some historical data.
Fortunately, I added Odeo a while back. (Also fortunately, "odeo" is unique enough that there were very few uses of it on the web before we started using it.) So now you can see
the history of Odeo hits since the beginning of April (general trend: up and to the right).
